Winds Of Change: Cooler Gulf Coast Weekend; Sleet Possible Tonight

Winds gusting over 40 mph and showers marked the passage of a cold front through the North Escambia area on Friday. Skies will clear on Saturday, with cooler weather for the rest of the weekend.

Here is your official North Escambia area forecast:

  • Tonight: A slight chance of rain showers before 11pm, then a chance of rain showers and sleet between 11pm and 2am, then a chance of rain showers after 2am. Cloudy, with a low around 38. Calm wind becoming northeast around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.
  • Sunday: A 20 percent chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 62. East wind between 5 and 10 mph.

Today: 38th Annual Ruritan Farm Equipment Auction

The 38th Annual Walnut Hill Ruritan Club Farm Equipment Auction will be held Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m.

The auction includes not only farm equipment, but also a second simultaneous auction with household items like tools and small equipment, lawn and garden items, antiques and more.

Concessions will be available all day from the Ruritan Club.

The sale will be located at the Walnut Hill Community Center on Highway 97  just north of Ernest Ward Middle School.

Friday Night’s Northview At Freeport Baseball Canceled

Tonight’s Northview baseball games at Freeport have been canceled.

Both the varsity and junior varsity Chiefs were scheduled to travel to Freeport this afternoon, but Freeport canceled the game late Thursday afternoon due to a scheduling conflict.

Northview’s varsity and junior varsity baseball teams will be on the road Monday at Washington. The JV begins at 4:00 with the varsity to follow at 6:30 p.m.

Northview Track Meet, JV Baseball Canceled Today, JV And Varsity Canceled For Friday

A track meet scheduled for this afternoon at Northview High School has been canceled due to wet track conditions. A JV baseball game set for 4 p.m. has also been canceled, along with varsity and JV games scheduled for Friday.

The next scheduled track meet is March 6 at 4 p.m. at Northview. Central, Jay, J.U. Blacksher and Escambia Academy are scheduled to participate.

Both the JV and varsity baseball teams were scheduled travel to Freeport on Friday, but were canceled Thursday afternoon due to a Freeport scheduling problem.

Northview JV Baseball Games Moved To W.S. Neal

The Northview and W.S. Neal double header scheduled for today at Northview has been moved to W.S. Neal. The games will begin at the same times — 4:00 and 6:00. The location was changed due to wet field conditions at Northview.

Florida Black Chamber CEO To Address Northview Black History Program

The founder of the Florida Black Chamber of Commerce will be the guest speaker at the annual Northview High School Black History Program Wednesday morning at Northview High School.

Eugene Franklin, who currently serves as the chamber’s president and CEO, will address the students during two identical programs at 9:30 and 10:40 a.m. in the Northview theater.

The public is invited to attend the program “Black Light: Embracing Diversity and Celebrating Contributions”.

Today’s Holiday Closings

February 20, 2012

The following will be closed Monday in observance of Washington’s Birthday:

  • Escambia County offices
  • Jay city offices
  • Santa Rosa County schools
  • ECUA business offices will be closed, but no change in garbage collection
  • ECAT offices will be closed; bus routes will run regular Saturday service schedules, except for Route 60 in Century which will keep a regular weekday schedule.
  • The U.S. Postal Service’s retail windows will be closed, and there will be no deliveries by carriers. Mail will be collected from collection boxes and mail will be boxed to post office boxes. The bulk mail acceptance unit will be closed. Express mail will be delivered.

Note: Escambia County Schools are open today, as are Town of Century offices.
