Sandbags, Tarps Available Today

Sandbags and tarps are being made available today to Escambia County residents in advance of anticipated heavy rainfall.
Escambia County is making ten filled sandbags available per vehicle to the public at no cost, while supplies last. Full sandbags will available tomorrow from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Escambia County Road Prison, 601 Highway 297A, Cantonment. A 10-bag limit per vehicle will be imposed until supplies run out.
Residents needing tarps prior to expected rains this weekend to cover belongings that have been brought outside of flooded homes can pick up free tarps from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Escambia County Public Safety Boulding, South Parking Lot, 6575 North W Street. Tarps will be distributed on a first-come first-served basis until supplies are exhausted.
Free Farm Share Food Distribution Saturday At Ransom Middle

In response to the local flooding that has impacted Escambia County, Farm Share and State Rep. Clay Ingram will host a free food distribution event on Saturday, May, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ransom Middle School, 1000 West Kingsfield Road, Cantonment.
District 5 Escambia County Commissioner Steven Barry, State Sen. Greg Evers, Superintendent Malcolm Thomas and District 5 School Board Member Bill Slayton will join the volunteer efforts to distribute food to assist families in need.
Families will be provided with Farm Share food bags free of charge with a variety of fresh, in season produce along with water, blankets and other needed goods.
Farm Share is a nonprofit organization working to alleviate hunger and malnutrition by recovering fresh, nutritious food and distributing it to those who need it across Florida.
Flash Flood Watch In Effect: Possible Heavy Rain Returns

There is flash flood watch in effect for Escambia and Santa Rosa counties in Florida from Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon. During the time period, from one to three inches of rainfall is expected on already saturated ground. Local totals of 5-7 inches are possible where thunderstorms repeatedly move over the same locations.

- Friday Night Showers and thunderstorms. Low around 65. South wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Volunteer Meeting Tonight For Those That Seek To ‘Reimagine Century’

The Reimagine organization will hold a meeting tonight in order to continue plans on how to best meet the needs of Century.
Reimagine Century will be held on Saturday, September 13 at Showalter Park. A volunteer meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Ag Building on West Highway 4 in Century.
Organizer Linda English said the group is on a mission to serve those less fortunate, bringing together churches, business, community groups and individuals.
Reimagine has held similar events in Brownsville, Warrrington, Thomaston, GA, Santa Rosa County and Peru. Events have included clothing giveaways, free haircuts, free food, free health checks and displays from community organizations.

Scott Asks Obama To Issue Major Disaster Declaration

Gov. Rick Scott has asked President Barack Obama to issue a major disaster declaration for Escambia and Santa Rosa counties because of storms and flooding that have inundated the western Panhandle since April 7.
“At this time, I request that only individual assistance be included within the major disaster declaration,” Scott wrote to the president Monday. “However, I anticipate a future request for a public assistance declaration. Also, I expect that additional counties will qualify for federal assistance under both the individual and public assistance programs.”
Scott added that economic losses could exceed $100 million.
Last week, Scott declared a state of emergency in 26 counties from Escambia to Alachua due to heavy rains and flooding.
“We must do everything we can to ensure that these families can get back on their feet, and this declaration would support those efforts. I look forward to going back to the Panhandle later this week to further assess the progress of recovery operations,” the governor said.

Red Cross Delivering Recovery Items To Flooded Neighborhoods

As flood waters recede, additional pockets of damage continue to be discovered as the Red Cross and its government partners expand disaster assessment efforts in Northwest Florida. Residents of affected areas are hard at work to clean up and salvage what they can.
To assist individual recovery efforts, the Red Cross has multiple teams working across affected areas to provide assistance. The Red Cross will distribute clean-up supplies, water and snacks at the following fixed site on Monday, May 5 at the Gulf Breeze City Hall, 10070 Shoreline Drive, Gulf Breeze – from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Red Cross will also have mobile units in affected neighborhoods starting at 9 a.m. on Monday. General areas include Navarre in Santa Rosa County and Beulah, Piedmont Road, Ashland Avenue, Corrydale and Lake Charlene in Escambia County.
Supplies available from the Red Cross include items such as tarps, work gloves, flashlights and clean-up kits. Additionally, Red Cross Emergency Response Vehicles will accompany bulk distribution vehicles to provide snacks and water.
Lady Jaguars Regional Game Rained Out, Postponed Until Today

The West Florida Lady Jaguars were rained out Saturday before play could begin in the Region 1-4A final in Callahan, north of Jacksonville. The Lady Jags and West Nassau High will try again today to determine who is headed to Vero Beach in the state playoffs next week. A playoff final win would be the first softball state championship for West Florida High.

Southern Baptist Disaster Relief Teams At Hillcrest Offer Help, Need Volunteers

The Southern Baptist Disaster Relief Teams are in the area and ready to work.
They are operating from a command center at Hillcrest Baptist Church. They are providing assistance to citizens who need help with basic clean up. Their team can help break down damaged sheetrock and carpet and then provide sanitizing services to damaged homes.
The disaster relief team offices at Heritage Hall inside of Hillcrest Baptist Church will be open from 8 am to 8 pm. Citizens can either walk-in or make an appointment by calling (850) 476-2233.
Volunteers are also needed.
Last Chance To See ‘Shrek the Musical’

Shrek the Musical will be presented again tonight at Northview High School.
The musical is based on the Oscar winning DreamWorks film that started it all, bringing the hilarious story of everyone’s favorite ogre to life on stage.
Shrek the Musical will be presented at 7:00 tonight in the Northview threatre. Admission is $8 at the door.
