James Lavon Kelly

James Lavon Kelly, age 77 of Foshee Road in Brewton, passed away Wednesday February 1, 2012, at a local hospital after a brief illness.
Mr. Kelly was a native and former resident of Pensacola, and during his childhood years lived in Pollard, AL, before moving to Brewton over 50 years ago. Mr. Kelly worked for Fisher-Pou Funeral Home in Pensacola during his early career in funeral service, and later worked for Mr. Marshall Craver at Craver’s and Flomaton Funeral Home. He later acquired both funeral homes in which he operated and managed with dignity and respect to the citizens of Brewton, Flomaton and surrounding areas until his retirement in December 2010.
He was a former long time member of the Brewton Rotary Club, Knights of the Round Table and was a member of the Pollard United Methodist Church. Mr. Kelly was an avid Crimson Tide football fan.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Shelby Kelly of Brewton; three daughters, Belinda Hintze of Crofton, Maryland; Beverly Cheniae of Virginia Beach; Brenda Kelly of Flomaton; three sons, Barry VanHoosen of Brewton; Larry VanHoosen of Mobile; Keith VanHoosen of Mobile; one sister, Sue Jarrett of Pensacola; 10 grandchildren, six great grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews and other family members.
Funeral services for Mr. James Lavon Kelly are scheduled for Sunday afternoon February 5, 2012, at 2:00 at Craver’s Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Floyd Dyal and Rev. Johnny White officiating. Interment will follow in Pollard Cemetery with Craver’s Funeral Home on Brewton directing.
Visitation will be Saturday February 4, 2012, from 5-9 p.m. at Craver’s Funeral Home Inc,.
Crystal Cherie Owens

Crystal Cherie Owens, age 30 of Pensacola, passed away on January 27, 2012.
She loved life and people. Crystal was a people person who had a big heart and would do anything to help, whether right or wrong.
Crystal was preceded in death by her aunt, Cindy Macon and her grandparents, Romaine and Walter Spivey.
She is survived by her children, Daniel Fine and Daelyn Fine; long-time companion, Shawn Fine; mother, Rochelle Dannelly; father, Richard Owens; sisters and brothers, Chris Shiver, Kelly Grim (Anthony), Richard, Jacob and Patrick Owens; grandmother, Anna Scruggs (Carl); aunts and uncles, Lynn Cruz, Joanne Mullins, John Owens, Dorothy Issac, Roxanne Bonifay, and Rhonda Pulley (Ronnie); nieces and nephews, Rebecca & Courtney Grim and McKenzie and Chase Shiver; and many cousins.
There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, in the Parkview Baptist Church at Rosalyn Way and Cary Memorial Blvd (Brent Lane and Palafox area). Fellowship gathering immediately following service in Church Hall. In place of any food being brought to the house, friends are encouraged to bring to the church to share.
Crystal was a loving mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Janice Lee Turner

Mrs. Janice Lee Turner, 77, passed away on Sunday, January 29, 2012, in Century.
Mrs. Turner was a native and lifelong resident of Byrneville, and she owned and operated Head Hunters Beauty Shop in Flomaton for a number of years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and three sisters.
She is survived by two sons, Steve and Angie Turner of Byrneville and Mike and Diane Turner of Theodore; her daughter, Charlotte and Curtis Moye of Flomaton; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 31, 2012, at 2 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home in Atmore with the Rev. Bobo Bell officiating..
Burial will follow at the Byrneville Cemetery.
Visitation will be Tuesday, January 31, 2012, from 12:30 p.m. until funeral time at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Bo Odom, Coley McColeman, Curtis Moye, Deston Taylor, Jerry Doran, and Johnny Lee.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dale Findley.
Gerald David “Jerry” Boles

Gerald David “Jerry” Boles of Cantonment went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 26, 2012. He was a member of Gonzalez Baptist Church.
Gerald was preceded in death by his earthly father and mother, William J. and Willie Mae McCurley Boles.
Gerald was a loving brother, uncle, cousin and friend. He will be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his siblings — one sister, Gwendolyn A. (James) Paul; three brothers, William J. “Buddy” (Brenda) Boles, John S. (Becky) Boles and James T. Boles; his canine friend, Rebel; uncle and aunt, Gafford and Christine McCurdy; aunt, Juanetta Satathite, as well many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to his brother and caregiver, James Terry Boles and the nurses of Home Health Care for their devoted care throughout the years of his paralysis after the passing of his father and mother.
Gerald’s wishes were that his earthly body be cremated and a Memorial Service could be held at a later date.
Jerry will be remembered as quite the jokester.

Edward William “Buddy” Brunson

Edward William “Buddy” Brunson, 61, passed away on January 26, 2012. He was a lifelong resident of Jay He enjoyed fishing, hunting and was an accomplished pool player. In his later years he became accomplished in the art of painting. He was a great brother and uncle to all of us.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Jonnie Brunson and wife, Marsha Brunson.
He is survived by his sisters, Irene (Benny) Wolfe of Jay, Alene (Benny) Bell of Flomaton, Emma Jo (Andy) Wand of Orlando and many nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2012, from 6-9 p.m. at Jay Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, January 29, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at Bethel Holiness Church Cemetery with Rev. Wiley officiating services.

Mrs. Minnie Godwin Roley, 95, passed away on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at a Pensacola, FL hospital.
Mrs. Roley was a native of Jackson, AL, and a resident of Davisville, FL since 1950. She was a retired nurse, a former employee of T G & Y, and a member of the Bratt First Baptist Church. Preceded in death by her Husbands, Henry Godwin and Tommy Roley, and a Daughter, Bobbie MaLue.
Survivors include: two Daughters, Faye Cobb of Stockton, AL, and Brenda and Norman Steele of Davisville, FL; 5 Grandchildren; 12 Great-Grandchildren; 24 Great-Great-Grandchildren; a Brother, L.C. and Thelma Amerson of Norfolk, VA; and two Sisters, Shirley and Leroy Whatley of Bratt, FL and Allie Myers of Maryville, LA.
Funeral services will be Saturday, January 28, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Enfinger officiating..

Denny Grant Segrest

Denny Grant Segrest, went to swag the gates of Heaven on Monday, January 23, 2012. We may never understand why God takes someone before we’re ready, but obviously He is planning a fantastic party and needs an outstanding decorator; God chose the best!
Denny was born August 8, 1956, and spent his entire life in Chumuckla.
He was preceded in death by his father, Wilfred Segrest, and his grandparents, Claude Grant, Maggie Kelly Grant, and Robert and Bessie Segrest.
He is survived by his mother, Odene Grant Segrest; his sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Mack Wombles; his special cousin, Glennie Faye Hearn; his God-children, Melanie Gaylard Gibbs, Jason Gaylard, Justin Gaylard, and Mikayla Thomas; his special phone friends, Tessie Williams, Dot Germann, and Lillian Ward; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, who all loved him very much.
Denny never met a stranger. He was a bright and shining star who touched the lives of many people all over the world. To know him was to love him.
Visitation will be Friday, January 27, from 5-8 p.m. at the Lewis Funeral Home, Milton Chapel. A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 28, 2012, at the funeral home with burial to follow at Elizabeth Chapel Cemetery.
Pastor Joey Rogers and Bishop Vincent Warren will be officiating. Pallbearers will be Denny’s cousins. Lewis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary E. Byrd, 84 of Atmore, died Tuesday January 24, 2012, in Atmore. She was a homemaker, born in Perdido on July 24, 1927, to the late Marvin and Ocea Chapelle Wilson.
She is preceded in death by two daughters, four brothers, and four sisters.
Survivors are three sons, Donald Wayne Cook of Nokomis, FL, Joseph Carl Byrd of GA, James Marvin Byrd of Tallahassee; two daughters, Molly Ogden and Myhalia Ard both of Atmore; one brother, Howard Wilson of Theodore; one sister Mable Julia Lee of Brewton; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services will be Saturday January 28, 2012, at 10 a.m. from Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Paul Enfinger officiating. Interment will follow in Antioch Cemetery in Nokomis, FL. Pallbearers will be Ralph Beasley, Terrel Ard, Luther Ogden, Arthur Ray McKenzie, B.J. Long and Martin Hollingsworth.
Family will receive friends Saturday January 28, 2012 at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home one hour prior to service time.

Grace Dobbs Joiner

Mrs. Grace Dobbs Joiner, 91, passed away on Tuesday, January 17, 2012, in Bratt.
Mrs. Joiner was a native of Georgiana, AL, a former resident of Walnut Hill, and Oak Grove, and a resident of Bratt for the past 17 years. She volunteered as a Pink Lady at Atmore Community Hospital, was a former employee at St. Regis Bag Plant, a supporter of six young people overseas until her death, and was a member of the Bratt Assembly of God Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harmon Joiner, a brother, Ralph Dobbs, a sister, Betty Holley, and her parents, Ralph and Jessie Ophelia Dobbs.
She is survived by two sons, Billy Godwin of Chiefland, FL, and Tommy and Pat Godwin of Wewahitchka, FL; two daughters, Faye Godwin of Little Rock, AR, and Elaine and Robert Earl Godwin of Bratt; five grandchildren, Cyndi and Scott Warren of Pensacola, Matt Godwin of Wewahitchka, FL, Julie and Andy Bane of Fredericksburg, VA, Jason and Zarah Godwin of WA, and Courtney Godwin of Chiefland, FL; three great-grandchildren, Jarrod Dawson of Pensacola, Elizabeth Grace Bane and Brendon Bane, both of Fredericksburg, VA; and her adopted daughter, Linda and Willard Smith of Blounstown, FL.
Funeral services will be Friday, January 20, 2001, at 10:00 a.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Theron Collingsworth and Brother Willard Smith officiating.
Burial will follow at the Oak Grove Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Ted McGlothern, Robin Faulke, Jason Godwin, Matt Godwin, Jarrod Dawson, Andy Bane and Scott Warren.
William A. Black

William A. Black, 82 of Canoe. died Tuesday January 24, 2012, in Mobile.
He was a retired salesmen for Atmore Hardware, born in Canoe on May 31, 1929, to the late Presley and Pearl Bristow Black.
He served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Black; one daughter, Wanda Clark and husband Randy all of Canoe; two brothers, Herman T. Black of Atmore, Jerry B. Black NC; one granddaughter, Daphne Clark; one great-grandchild, Braiden Peebles all of Canoe.
Graveside services will be Friday January 27, 2012, at 2:30 p.m. in Canoe Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Steve Vanlandingham officiating. Pallbearers will be nephews.
