Clinton “Lamar” Lewis

Clinton “Lamar” Lewis, age 64 of Jay, passed away July 16, 2012.

Lamar retired from Exxon and worked at Quantum in Jay. He was a wonderful husband, father, granddaddy, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He was a very hard worker and a very good man. He will be missed by many.

Lamar was preceded in death by his parents, Asa Lewis and Irene Blackman Lewis and nephew, Thomas Asa (Bubba) Hobbs.

Lamar is survived by his wonderful wife, Paula Lewis; his children, Jennifer Karen (Eric) Ruzzin of Ben Salem, PA, Jeremy Clinton Lewis of Milton, Jacquelyn Irene Lewis (Ed Janoff) of New York, NY, Jonathan Lamar Lewis of Pensacola, Tim (Michelle) Lunsford, Jonathan Holland, and Lori (Rusty) Lee; brothers, Elmer (Sandy) Lewis of Van Vleck, TX, Jerry (Ann) Lewis of Brewton, Ed (Jeannie) Lewis of Youngstown, FL; sister, Sarah Lewis Hobbs of Milton; grandchildren, Ashley, Kimee, Erica Ruzzin, Natasha, Zac, Madison Lewis, Kody, Brant, Trevor Lunsford, Connor and Tanner Lee and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral Service will be 10 a.m. Thursday, July 19, 2012, at Lewis Funeral Home, Milton Chapel with visitation from 8:30 a.m. until service time.

Mary Peacock Morris

July 17, 2012

Mrs. Mary Peacock Morris, 90, passed away on Sunday, July 15, 2012, at a Jay hospital.

Mrs. Morris was a native of Byrneville and a resident of Jay since 1934. She attended the Sardis First Baptist Church.

She is preceded in death by her Husband, Johnny A. Morris, a Son, Preston Morris, 3 Grandsons, Michael Morris, Stevie Morris and Preston Morris Jr., 3 Sisters and 3 Brothers.

She was preceded indeath by her husband, Johnny A. Morris; a son, Preston Morris; three grandsons, Michael Morris, Stevie Morris and Preston Morris Jr.; three sisters and three brothers.

She is survived by three sons,  Alton Morris of Brewton,  Mason (Debra) Morris of Jay, and Ronnie (Fran) Morris of Bratt, Fla.; a daughter, Vivian Joiner of Jay; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 18, 2012, at noon at the Petty- Eastside Chapel with Rev. Jesse Wood officiating.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 18, 2012, from 11 a.m. until funeral time at the Petty Eastside Chapel.

Burial will follow at Sardis Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Leon Peacock, William Sheffield, Jeremy Morris, Lavon Caraway, Curtis Lowry and Neal Lowry.

Carolyn L. Stewart

July 17, 2012

Mrs. Carolyn L. Stewart, 62, passed away on July 14, 2012, at a Mobile hospital.

Mrs. Stewart was a native and life long resident of Perdido, AL. Mrs. Stewart attended the Fretwell Tabernacle Church.

Survivors include her husband, David Stewart of Perdido, AL; two daughters, Dana Stewart (Wesley) Cooley of Perdido and Michelle Stewart (Anthony) Kimbler of Robertsdale;  six brothers, Royce Lambeth of Perdido, Eddie Lambeth of Perdido,  Joe Lambeth of Perdido, Kenny Lambeth of Perdido, Carey Lambeth of Perdido,and Shannon Lambeth of Perdido; two sisters, Joyce Lambeth Mitchem of Perdido and Fannie Garrison of Bay Minette; and two grandchildren, Alanna Cooley and Adrian Cooley of Perdido.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at 3:00 P.M. at the Fretwell Tabernacle Church with Sis. Helen Stewart officiating.

Burial will follow at Bryars-McGill Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday, July 16, 2012 from 6-9 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Adrian Cooley, Adam Capers, Earl Parker, Leroy Troupes, Anthony Kimbler Sr. and Jerry Stewart.

Ernest D. Gay

July 16, 2012

Ernest D. Gay, age 63 of Jay,  passed away Saturday July 14, 2012.

He was born in Brantley, AL, on September 5, 1948 to Arnold and Cassie Gay. Before retiring he spent most of his adult life farming to provide for his family. He was a loving husband, father and pawpaw. In his spare time he enjoyed going to the mountains, fishing, building bird houses and working in the yard.

He is survived by his loving wife, Bernice “Cat” Gay, of Jay;, one daughter, Joyce (Wayne) Hawthorne of Jay; one son David (Tracy) Gay of Opp, AL;  three grandchildren, Austin Hawthorne, Brianna Hawthorne and Ernie Gay; three brothers, Houston Gay (Caroline) of Millard County. GA, Edward Gay of Flomaton, Benjamin Gay of Baker;, three sisters, Inez Thurman of Frost Proof, FL, Linzy (Dykes) Strickland of Jay, Shirley (Howard) Lail of Milton; amd  numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at New Bethel Baptist Church from 10 a.m. until noon. Funeral services will follow at noon. Bro. Matthew Dobson and Bro. Fredrick Barrow will be officiating.

Burial will follow at Pine Level Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ernie Gay, Austin Hawthorne , Keith Strickland, Wesley Strickland , Kaleb Harris and Travis Gay. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Cannon, Larry Bates, James Earl Carnley and Donald Boutwell.

Lyvonne Coleman

Mrs. Lyvonne Coleman, 79, passed away on Saturday, July 14, 2012, in Milton, Florida.

Mrs. Coleman was a native of Goodway, Alabama and a resident of Byrneville since 1965. Mrs. Coleman wrote the Byrneville News for Tri-City Ledger for the past 20 years and attended Poplar Dell Baptist Church since 1965.

She is preceded in death by her husband, John Bob Coleman, one daughter, Patricia Coleman Jernigan and one brother, Bobby Davis.

She is survived by her four sons, John R. (Peggy) Coleman of Byrneville; Glen M. (Charlene) Coleman of Brewton; Donald (Margaret) Coleman of McDavid; and Daniel (Becky) Coleman of Milton; one daughter, Cathy Coleman (Milton) Ray of McDavid; one brother, MacArthur Davis of Barnett Crossroads, AL; one sister, Earlene Roberts of Pleasant Grove, AL; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at 10 a.m. at the Petty Eastside Chapel with Rev. Mitch Herring and John Coleman officiating. Burial will follow at Poplar Dell Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday, July 16, 2012, from 6-8 p.m. at the Petty Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Goldie J. Morris

July 13, 2012

Mrs. Goldie J. Morris, 88, passed away on July 11, 2012, in Atmore.

Mrs. Morris was a native of Burnesville, MS, a former resident of Monroeville and a resident of Atmore for most of her life. Mrs. Morris was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and she attended Brooks Memorial Baptist Church.

Mrs. Morris was preceded in death by her husband, Grady Edward Morris and grandson David Morgan.

She is survived by one son, G. Allen (Brenda) Morris of Marietta, GA; one daughter, Sylvia Morgan (Bernard Owens) of Atmore; two brothers, Alton (Junior) Forrester and Don Forrester both of Columbia, MS; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday, July 14, 2012, at 1 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Dave Taylor officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday, July 13, 2012, from 5-8 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be John Morgan, Scott Morris, Paul Gillikan, Gary Weathers, William Forrester and David Forrester.

Ronald “Chris” Christopherson

Ronald “Chris” Christopherson, 69, passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2012. Chris was a retired U.S. Navy veteran with service in Vietnam. He was actively involved in several churches and a member of Charity Baptist Church. He loved gospel music, traveling, and his pet dog “Katy”.
Chris was preceded in death by his grandfather, Christopher Christopherson; his parents, Henry George and Gladys A. Christopherson; and brother, Gerald Christopherson.
He is survived by his wife, Carla; brother, Norman George Christopherson (Wanda); numerous nieces and nephews; step-son, Larry Williams; eight grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 10 -11 a.m. Monday, July 16, 2012, at Charity Baptist Church, 1675 West Roberts Road, Cantonment. Funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. with Dr. James McGaughey officiating. Interment will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola.

Chipley Erlene Simmons

July 12, 2012

Chipley Erlene Simmons, daughter of Marion C. Diamond (Chip) and Cora Leigh Diamond was born on May 29, 1927. She passed away on July 11, 2012.

She attended Chumuckla School and was a member of the Chumuckla girls basketball team. She married Clyde M. Simmons on July 30, 1947. They were married 62 years when he passed away on April 26, 2010. They will join together in Heaven to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary this month. Clyde and Erlene had been members of the Cora Baptist Church most of their lives.

They had two children. Jerry Clyde, born in 1948 and Kathy Darlene, born in 1957. Erlene worked for the Santa Rosa County Health Department at the clinic in Jay for 22 years. She retired in 1988.

Erlene Simmons loved the Lord, her family and being an exemplary homemaker. She is known for her amazing cooking, beautiful gardens and extreme generosity.

She is survived by her son Jerry (Cindi); daughter Kathy (James) Walker;  her grand-children Jerry Clyde ,II(Bonni) Simmons, Fred (Julie) Simmons, Scott (Logan) Walker, Mick Walker, Robert Kane and Kenny Kane; and her great granddaughter “Allie”. Other family members include her sister Gladysteen Renfroe, brother Douglas Wayne (Janis) Diamond and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Chip and Cora Diamond, husband, Clyde Simmons , brothers, A.C. Diamond and Jim Diamond.

A visitation will be held Friday, July 13  from 6-8 p.m. at Jay Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 13 at Cora Baptist Church with Rev. LaDon Hall officiating.

Pallbearers are Jerry Clyde Simmons II, Scott Walker, Mick Walker, Wayne Hawthorne, Mickey Brown and Bryan Ellis. Honorary pallbearers will be Roger Dobson, Merlin Edwards, Frank Rowell, Jerry McGee and Leon Jackson.

Clyde Calvin Byrd

July 12, 2012

Clyde Calvin Byrd, 70 of Atmore passed away Tuesday July 10, 2012, at his residence. He was retired from CSX Railroad, born in Huxford, Al on June 19, 1942 to the late Patrick Garvey and Myrtle Croley Byrd.

Survivors are two sons, Paul Byrd and wife, Tina of Brewton, Raymond Byrd and wife, Nancy of Fort Deposit, AL;  one brother, Vernon Byrd and wife Melba of Mobile; one sister, Pat Baxter and husband, Levon of St.Elmo, AL; three grandchildren, Christian Byrd, Zackary Byrd, and Stephanie Byrd; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be Saturday July 14, 2012, at 11 a.m. from the Huxford Reorganized Latter Day Saints Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors.

Family will receive friends Saturday July 14, 2012, at the church one hour prior to service time.

Joyce Ann Knotts Ashcraft

Joyce Ann Knotts Ashcraft, age 69, of Jay, passed away July 9, 2012. She had resided in Jay since 1968. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Eva Knotts; two sisters Elaine Knotts and Ruth Tedder.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years Paul Ashcraft; son Jeffrey (Emerald) Ashcraft; brothers Gene (Shelby) Knotts and Alvin Knotts; grandchildren Libby, Ian and Ethan Ashcraft and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Visitation will be held Thursday, July 19, 2012 from 6-8 P.M. at Jay Funeral Home.
