Grady Earl Carden

Mr. Grady Earl Carden, age 89, of Tractor Trail Road in Jay, passed away Saturday, May 4, 2013, at his residence after a brief illness.
Mr. Carden was a native of Phil Campbell, Alabama and a former resident of Brewton and Pollard before moving to Jay six and a half years ago. Upon graduation, he entered the United States Navy and served for two years. He then attended Larkins Business School and received his accounting degree. He went to work at St. Regis Paper Company for two years before transferring to Container Corporation in 1952. Mr. Carden retired from Container in 1983 and started Carden Straw Company in 1984 and retired in 2005.
He married Lillie Ruth Reaves in 1950 and was married for 52 years before she passed away in 2001. He was a member of the Berrydale Baptist Church.
Surivors include his daughter, Toni Grissett of Brewton; step-daughters, Beverly Fields of Pace and Patsy (Mike) Scott of Jay; sisters, Myrtle Campbell of Pace, Roberta Black of Flomaton, and Marie Sprinkle of Saraland, three grandchildren, Candace (Jeff) Lee, Tyler (Rebecca) Grissett, and Skyler Grissett; three great-grandchildren, Breanna, Chloe and Jeffrey Lee; five step-granddaughters and nine step great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Lillie Ruth Reaves Carden; wife of seven years, Margaret Huey Carden; and daughter, Debbie Carden.
Visitation will be Tuesday, May 7, 2013, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Craver’s Funeral Home.
Funeral services for Mr. Grady Earl Carden will be held Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Craver’s Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Gandy officiating.
Active pallbearers are Tommy Hall, Leo James, Shane Buckey, Lewie T. Smith, Jack Floyd and Ralph Hayes.
Honorary pallbearers are Durwood Williamson, Glen McCurdy, Doug McCurdy, Eugene McCurdy, Robert Carden, and Anthony Black.
Interment will follow in Pollard Cemetery with Craver’s Funeral Home Inc., of Brewton directing.
Bettie Elaine Wells Hall

Bettie Elaine Wells Hall, 63, of Perdido, passed away Monday, May 6, 2013, in Bay Minette. She was a retired License Practical Nurse. She was born in Bay Minette on November 16, 1949 to the late Walter Q. and Katie Lou Williamson Wells. She enjoyed photography and loved to help others. She was a member of Pleasant Plains Splinter Hill Pentacostal Church.
Survivors include her husband, Clifford P. Hall, Sr; one son, C.P. Hall, Jr. all of Perdido; one brother, William Walter (Maggie) Wells of Perdido; one sister, Jean Wells; three grandchildren, Claryssia Hall, Collin Hall and Colton Hall and many other relatives and friends.
Services will be Thursday, May 9, 2013, at 10 a.m. from Atmore Memorial Chapel with Reverend Angelo Thomley and Sister Thursa Long officiating.
Interment will follow in Bryars McGill Cemetery in Perdido.
Family will receive friends Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at Atmore Memorial Chapel from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Lois G. Cleaveland

Lois G. Cleaveland , age 98, a resident of Foley, passed away Sunday, May 5, 2013, at Robertsdale Healthcare Center after a brief illness with breast cancer. Mrs Cleaveland was born in Irwin, Iowa on November 23, 1914, to Minor and Grace Munson. She graduated from Irwin High School, married her high school sweetheart, Lyle, then drove his grandparents to Foley for the winter, and the young couple stayed.
In the early years of their marriage, Mrs. Cleaveland worked as an operator for Gulf Telephone Company. Later, she and her husband purchased Perfection Nursery and managed this business for several years. Mrs. Cleaveland may best be remembered as the “Lady that ran the school store” for the Old Foley High on Pine Street. In 1952 Mrs. Cleaveland became an active member of Foley United Methodist Church until she was no longer able to attend.
Mrs. Cleaveland was preceded in death by her husband , Lyle; her son Fred Lyle, Jr.; and infant grandson, Nathan.
She is survived by her daughters, Bonnie (Jim) Donaldson of Foley and Gay (Bennie) Hassebrock of Molino; six grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 1 great- great grandchild. Other survivors include seven nieces and nephews and their extended families and two special friends, Marion “Mims” Asplund and Walter Jones.
Visitation will be at Wolfe-Bayview Home in Foley on Wednesday, May 8 2013, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Graveside services will be Thursday, May 9, 2013, at 10 a.m. at Pine Rest Cemetery in Foley.

Marrahnell Wright Culp

Marrahnell Wright Culp, 78, of Cantonment, passed away April 29, 2013, after a chronic illness. She was born in Laurel Hill, Florida on July 28, 1934. She was preceded in death by parents George W. Wright and Percie L. Wright and infant brother. After working for years at the telephone company, she was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking, flowers and gardening. After her husband retired, they enjoyed traveling with their camper and meeting new friends while fishing and camping around the country. “Nell”, as everyone knew her, was devoted to her husband, children and grandchildren. She was a devout member of Cantonment First Baptist Church.
She is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, John E. Culp; two sons, Gregory (Sue) Henderson and Dale (Angela) Henderson; daughter, Starlyn (Jessie) James; five granddaughters, Candace (Bill) Hendricks, Jessica (Todd) Barlow, Whitney and Courtney Henderson, Kristie Henderson; three great-grandchildren, Nathan and Matthew Hendricks and Addistynn Barlow; two brothers, George C. Wright and Preston Wright and many nieces and nephews.
She will be remembered as a generous, strong and loving wife, mother and grandmother. Saying she will be missed is an understatement.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 3, 2013, at Faith Chapel North. Burial was in Barrancas National Cemetery.

Gertrude Johnson Stephens, 90, of Mobile, passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2013, in Mobile. She was employed by the U.S. Government as a U.S.Customs Director. She was born in Jay on October 11, 1922, to the late James L and Josephine Johnston Johnson. She was a resident at Westminster Villiage in Spanish Fort and a member of the East Point Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Winona (David) Leard of Mobile; sister, Olivia Killiam of Gasden, Ala.; three grandchildren, Courtney Jacobs of St.Augustine, Rachel Leard and Andrew Leard both of Mobile; great-grandson, Lucas Jacobs and a host of family and friends.
Services were held Saturday, May 4 at from the Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Rob Burns officiating. Interment was in Serenity Gardens.

Marcella Belle Robinson, 74, of Castaic, CA, passed away Saturday, April 25, 2013 in Panorama City, CA. She was a machinist with Aerospace. She was born in West Virginia on May 22, 1938, to the late Daniel Otis and Lucille Mayle Drasko.
She is preceded in death by her brother, Junior Drasko.
Survivors include her three sons, Daniel Robinson of Washington, Vernon Robinson of Anchorage, Alaska, and Earl Robinson of Louisiana; one daughter, Pamela (Greg) Ferrier of Castaic, CA; two brothers, Jack Drasko and Mack Drasko; one sister, Helen (Donald) Morgan; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be Tuesday, May 07, 2013, at 11 a.m. from the Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ted Bridges officiating. Interment will follow in Walnut Hill Baptist Cemetery.
Family will receive friends Tuesday, May 07, 2013, at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home one hour prior to service time.

Mrs. Myrtle Louise Smith, age 75, of Century, passed away on Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at Century Care Center.
Mrs. Smith was a native of Brewton and had been a resident of Century since 1960, coming from Brewton where she was a member of the 1958 Class of W.S. Neal High School. She was retired from Monsanto where she worked as a lab technician. Mrs. Smith was of the Pentecostal faith and was preceded in death by her husband, Cleveland R. ‘Buck’ Smith, Sr.; and brothers, James Blow and William Joseph ‘Joe’ Blow.
Her survivors include her children, Cleveland ‘Buckie’ Rufus (Susan) Smith of the McCall community near Flomaton, Sonja (Mike) Allen of Bratt, Tammy (Tom) Wilkerson of Pollard, and Johnnie Joshua (Kimberly) Hughes-Smith of Gulf Breeze; brother, Charles (Cathy) Blow of Navarre; grandchildren, Burton Smith, Brandon Smith, Rachael Smith, Brandy Wilkerson and Johnnie Buck Smith; great-grandchildren, Jackson Smith, Brayden Smith, Robert Weston Spicer, Juliana Smith, Samantha Smith, Dalton Smith and another on the way.
Graveside services will he held on Friday, May 3, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Union Grove Freewill Baptist Cemetery in Castleberry, AL with speaker Ronnie Fore.

Agnes Faye Smith, 76 of Atmore, passed away Monday, April 29, 2013, in Mobile. She was born on February 19, 1937, in Conecuh, Alabama to the late Will and Birda Curry Thompson. She was retired from Masland Carpets and was a member of Unity Baptist Church.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Hurley L. Smith; grandchild, Jospeh Daniel Johnson; two brothers, “Buck” Thompson and Bob Thompson and one sister, Mazie Lassiter.
Sh is survived by Myles (Sandy) Johnson of Atmore; Farrel (Kay) Johnson of Stephen’s City, VA; one daughter, Deborah (Tony) Scott of Brewton; two sisters, Judy Miller and Hazel Lynch; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; and very special friend “Rocky”.
Funeral services will be Friday, May 03, 2013, at 10 a.m. from Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Gene Pickern officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Gary C. Mullins

Gary C. Mullins, 61, of Hixson, TN, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 26, 2013.
Mr. Mullins was born in Chattanooga and raised in Pensacola. He graduated from Tate High School in 1969, where he served as Senior Class president and was Mr. Tate High School. He returned to Tennessee and graduated from the University of Tennessee where he belonged to the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. He retired as a Supervisor Deputy US Marshal belonging to SOG (special operations group). Gary was a member of Burks United Methodist Church, New Beginnings Sunday School Class, past president of the Soddy Daisy Quarterback Club, and also coached with the Red Bank Dixie Youth Baseball and YMCA youth football.
He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, H. F. “Speck” Dunaway; and grandparents, Fred and Ida Mullins and Walter and Nora Ann Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Karen Mullins; sons, Curtis and Michael Mullins; parents, Curtis and Willadean Mullins; brother, Fred (Patti Baillie) Mullins; sisters, Teresa (Camp) Wynn and Lisa Mullins (Paul) Barretto; mother-in-law, Ruth B. Dunaway; sister-in-law, Tami (Dan) Traczek; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, April 30, 2012 at Burks United Methodist Church in Hixson, TN.
