Muriel Erlean Philyaw

Mrs. , age 61, passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2019 in Atmore, Alabama.

Mrs. Philyaw was native of Atmore, AL and had resided in the Canoe, Wawbeek, AL area for most of her life. She was a former employee at Vanity Fair as a seamstress; she was a partner of Finley’s Gas Station and worked as a CNA at Atmore Nursing Care and sitting with the elderly. She is preceded in death by her father, Olbren Wilson; mother, Jessie Swindle; husband, Lindsey Edward Philyaw; sister, Marie Booth and brother, Dudley Wilson.

She is survived by one son, William L. Rigby, III of Daphne, AL; two daughters, Jennifer (Robert) Taylor of Forest, MS and Shirley (Brian) Adkison of Goodway, AL; two brothers, Edward “Buck” Wilson of Crestview, FL and Bennie (Cathy) Wilson of Milton, FL; one sister, Jeanette Quick of Century, FL; twelve grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 27, 2019 at 10:00 AM at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Bro. Malcolm Harrelson officiating.

Burial will follow at the Canoe Free Will Baptist Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Saturday, July 27, 2019 from 9:00 AM until service time at 10:00 AM at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Benjamin Jimenez, Michael Weaver, Kevin Jimenez, Henry Wiggins, Kenneth Morrow and Blake Frazier.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Jim Commalander and Dudley Flowers.

Angela Rae Hughen

Angela Rae Hughen (Angie), age 49, of Molino, FL, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 16, 2019.

Angie was best known for her qualities as a godly wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. She served her church family passionately, playing the piano, cleaning the church, and countless other behind the scenes projects. Angie was quietly a major contributor to her family and to her church, serving steadily in all areas, without the need for recognition or credit. She had a gentle touch and a tender smile.

Angie graduated high school from Pensacola Christian School, and obtained a Medical Secretary Associates Degree from Pensacola Christian College in 1990. She later served a lengthy tenure as the church secretary, drove the school bus, and took on the difficult role of home-school mom, teaching all five of her children from kindergarten up.

She is survived by her husband, Bill Hughen of Molino; five children, David Hughen (with wife Samantha) of Pensacola, Bethany Barrow (with husband Ryne) of Bratt, and Lauren Hughen, Ethan Hughen, and Caleb Hughen of Molino; one grandchild, Raelynn Barrow of Bratt; her parents, Ray and Sheila Davis of Benson, NC; her sister, Robbin Maples (with husband Joey) also of Benson; one nephew and three nieces, Wesley, Emma, Olivia, and Jordan Maples, all of Benson; and mother-in-law, Mary Hughen of Molino.

Family visitation will be held, Sunday, July 21, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Faith Bible Baptist Church in Century; friends are invited to visit at 2:30 p.m. The service will follow at 3 p.m.

Graveside services will be held at Ray’s Chapel afterwards.

Isham Gordon Nichols

Isham Gordon “I.G.” Nichols, Jr., 85 of Atmore, AL, passed away Sunday, July 14, 2019, in Mobile, AL. He was born in Burnt Corn, AL, on May 14, 1934, to the late Isham Gordon Nichols, Sr. and Velma Johnson Nichols. He attended Auburn University (A.P.I) and was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Atmore. He owned and operated Nichols Department Store for many years before retiring. He had served as a councilman with the City of Amore and was a past president of the Atmore Jaycees.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joyce C. Nichols; and a sister, Frances Nichols Black.

He is survived by his children, Randell “Randy” G. Nichols, Sr. and his wife Melissa of Atmore, AL; Scarlet Nichols Strom and husband Greg of Monroeville, AL; four grandchildren, Sterling Strom (Cory) Carter, Randell Gordon Nichols, Jr., Ann Walton Nichols and Anna Catherine Strom.

Funeral services were held  Tuesday, July 16, 2019, at the Patterson Chapel at First Baptist Church of Atmore with Rev. Kevin L. Garrett officiating.

Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Amanda Kay Townson

Mrs. Amanda Kay Townson, age 46, passed away Sunday, July 14, 2019, in Foley, Alabama.

Mrs. Townson was a native of Houston, TX, former resident of Bratt, FL where she lived most of her life and had resided in Summerdale, AL for the past two years. She was a loving and devoted mother and was of the Baptist faith. She is preceded in death by her parents, Dalton and Ester Garrett.

She is survived by her father, Joe Eddie Macks of McDavid, FL; fiancée, Lincoln T. Mund of Summerdale, AL; father of her children, Casey Townson of Atmore, AL; two sons, Casey Townson of Atmore, AL and Max Townson of Century, FL; one daughter, Kaylea Townson of Atmore, AL; four brothers, Anthony Garrett of Century, FL, Bryan (Kim) McGhee of Atmore, AL, Donnie (Deanna) Macks of Monroeville, AL and Daniel (Susie) Macks of Garland, AL; three sisters, Cherra Mae Garrett of Troy, MO, Angela McCall of Grand Bay, AL and Kim (Randall) Musgrove of Tallahassee, FL; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 18, 2019, at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Bro. Rickey Tedder officiating.

Burial was at the Sardis Baptist Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Austin Adams, Justin Henderson, Trey Price, Michael Lee, Michael Shipp and Brian Jackson.

Lily Brunette Weaver Williams

Lily Brunette Weaver Williams, 89 of Pensacola, FL passed away Friday, July 12, 2019, at her residence. She was a Registered Nurse. She was born in Prudue Hill, AL, on May 6, 1930, to the late R.B. Winston and Minnie Bertha Brantley Weaver.

She was a member of the Myrtle Grove Baptist Church and was very active in the community.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, James Williams, Jr.; son,  James Williams, III; two brothers, Edward “Tommie” Weaver, and Walter Scott Weaver.

Survivors include her granddaughter, Whitney Danielle Williams (Jonathan) Roden of Huntsville,AL; sister, Bonnie Gilda Weaver Quinley of Pensacola, FL; great-nieces and nephews, Winston Scott (Arlene) Weaver of Madison, AL, Caitlin Weaver (David) Luna of Birmingham, AL; Hannah Weaver (Tyjuan) Bryant of Huntsville, AL; great-great nieces and nephews, Lathan Luna and Laynie Luna.

Services were held Wednesday, July 17, 2019, from the Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Chris Larsen officiating.

Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Johnny Howel Hammock

Johnny Howel Hammock, 64, of Cantonment passed away suddenly, Saturday, July 13, 2019, at a local hospital.

He was born September 10, 1954, in Fairhope, Alabama. He worked on the farm with his father and then continued to work with his father for the state. At the young age of 20, he became a merchant marine. He was a member of the Sea Fare National Union. He retired from the merchant marines in 2010. He was an avid Alabama fan and never missed a game. He will always be remembered for his unique way of kidding around and his love and devotion for his family.

He is preceded in death by his son, Brian Morgan; parents, William and Ivadean Hammock; and brother, George Hammock.

Johnny is survived by his wife of 39 years, Judy Hammock; daughter, Holly Hammock; sister, Margarett (Earl) Jones; brother, David (Susie) Hammock; mother-in-law, Louise Capps; sisters-in-law, Debra Fowler; Kat (Tim) Alexander, and Lisa (Kevin) Odom; brother-in-law, Terry (Veniece) Capps; lifelong friend, Kenny Fowler; three granddaughters, Brianna, Meredith, and Addison; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 17, 2019, at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North with Bro. Kenneth Johnson, officiating.

Burial was in Cottage Hill Assembly of God Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Tim Alexander, Kevin Odom, Joshua Godwin, Terry Capps, Kenny Capps, and Ricky Odom.

Mrs. Alice Ruth Gates, age 74, passed away Sunday, July 7, 2019 in Mobile, Alabama.

Mrs. Gates was a native and former resident of Atmore, AL and had resided in Walnut Hill, FL for the past 40 years. Her home was open to all; her favorite was cooking and raising babies. She was a member of the Antioch Free Will Baptist Church in Nokomis, AL. She is preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Alice Davis; son, Martin R. “Buddy” Lassitter; three sisters, Eloise Isaacks, Joyce Osborne and Catherine Davis; and two brothers, Roy Davis and Jesse Davis.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Robert Lee Gates, Jr. of Walnut Hill, FL; two daughters, Rebel Gates of Walnut Hill, FL and Linda Lassitter Hamilton of Panama City, FL; three brothers, Jimmy Davis of Century, FL, Emmette Davis of Montgomery, AL and Billy (Diane) Davis of Monroeville, AL; seven grandchildren, Lauren Peabody, Tabitha Nelson, Russell Lassitter, Tosha Lassitter, Hannah Hamilton, Haden Howard (he was a caregiver and always by her side) and Martina Howard; 14 great-grandchildren, Olivia, Kolen, Konner, McKinzie, Bentley, Asaisha, Kylie, Brycen, Summer, Russell, Reese, Bowen, Riley and Rosa Lee; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 13, 2019, at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Bro. Alan Chase officiating.

Burial was at the Antioch Free Will Baptist Cemetery.

John Michael Garrard

John Michael “Mike” Garrard, 65 of Cantonment, FL, formerly of Atmore, AL, passed away Saturday July 6, 2019,  in Pensacola, Fl. He was a director over medical records. He was born on February 17, 1954, in Atmore, AL to the late John and Fonda Soloman Garrard, Jr.

He is preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Lucy Howard.

Survivors include his wife, Gail Blankenbeck Garrard of Ohio; two daughters, Kelly (Rusty) Howard of Allen, TX and Lori Beth (Michael) Diller of Walnut Hill, FL.; brother, David Garrard of Pensacola, FL; step-son, Blaine (Christina) McFarland of Ohio; step-daughter, Dana (Tony) Campise of Ohio; and 11 grandchildren.

Services were held Saturday, July 13, 2019, from Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel.

Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Velma Aline Covan

Mrs. Velma Aline Covan, age 79, passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2019, in Milton, Florida.

Mrs. Covan was a native of Quitman, MS, a resident of Century, FL for 63 years and had resided in Milton, FL for the past year. She was a member of the Jay Chapter #208 of the Order of Eastern Star, where she served as past grand matron and was a member of the New Life Fellowship Church. She is preceded in death by her parents, Coy and Velma Blackburn; husband, Willie Morris Covan; two sons, Ronnie Hayes and Randy Covan; and a sister, Margaret Levine Jones.

She is survived by her son, Radford (Tina) Covan of Pace, FL; daughter, Recindia (Buck) McCormick of Milton, FL; brother, Sherman (Pat) Glover of Byrneville, FL; 15 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 15, 2019, at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Bro. Lavon Caraway officiating.

Burial was at the Providence Cemetery, Georgiana, AL

Joyce Jeffers

Joyce Jeffers resident of Molino, FL passed away on July 16, 2019 at the age of 87. She was born on October 14, 1931 to Alton Delune Thomaston and Olene Bowdin Thomaston near Kinston, Alabama. After retiring from Champion Paper Mill (formerly St. Regis) Cantonment, Florida. Joyce was employed with Walmart, Saraland, Alabama. After returning to her home in Molina, Florida Joyce worked for a short time at Grocery Advantage. Joyce’s hobbies have included ceramics, woodworking, and fishing. Her favorite “fishing hole” was in the Tensaw River; Louise and Bumpkin Powell Powell can verify this fact. Joyce was a member of Highland Baptist Church, Molino, Florida. Prior to her residence at the Courtyard, Gulf Breeze. Joyce resided with her son, Deckie, and daughter in love, Terri.

Joyce is preceded in death by her father, DeLunie Thomaston; mother, Olene Thomaston; and sister in law, Shannon Thomaston.

Joyce is survived by her son, Deckie (Terri) Jeffers; brothers, Harold Thomaston, Ronald (Peggy) Thomaston and Donald (Debbie) Thomaston; grandchildren, Steven (Sarah) Jeffers, Kevin (Dannell) Jeffers, Jody (Mark) Celeste, Jennifer (Joey) Gray, Michael (Erin) Jordan and Tim (Meagan) Jordan; 16 great grandchildren and a great number of nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation will be Sunday, July 21, 2019, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM, at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North. Funeral Service will be Monday, July 22, 2019, at 10:00 AM, at the Funeral Home. Pastor Brian Calhoun will be officiating. Interment will be at Rhoades School Cemetery, Coffee County, Alabama.

Pallbearers will be Adrian Enfinger and Wayne Lepley.
