Another Hard Freeze Tonight

We are headed for another hard freeze in North Escambia tonight, with lows forecast to be just a bit warmer at about 20.
A red flag warning is in effectfrom 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. because of a humidity level that could fall to 15 percent this afternoon. A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are occurring now. A combination of low relative humidity and dry fuel will create rapid fire growth potential. Outdoor burning should be avoided.

[Updated 4:45 p.m.] We are in for another cold night, with tonight’s lows forecast to dip down to about 15 degrees in the North Escambia area.
That, of course, means another hard freeze warning. But by the end of the week, we could be return to more seasonable temps with lows around 40 and highs in the 60’s. Here is your official North Escambia forecast:

Saturday and Sunday nights, we have hard freeze warnings again with lows in teens. By late week, it will seem like a heat wave with highs reaching the 60’s.

Last Day For In-Person Disaster Applications In Atmore For Alabama, Florida Residents

Today is the last day to apply in person at the Atmore Library for federal disaster assistance following the mid-December floods. Assistance is available to residents and business owners in Escambia County, Alabama, and Escambia and Santa Rosa counties in Florida.
A disaster area declaration by the U.S. Small Business Administration following December’s floods is making federal assistance available to seven counties in Alabama and Florida.
Assistance in the form of low interest loans is available to homeowners, renters and businesses that were affected by the flooding between December 12 and December 18. Loans up to $200,000 are available to homeowners to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate. Homeowners and renters are eligible for loans up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property. Businesses and non-profit organizations can borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets.”
The SBA also provides mitigation funds to disaster victims up to 20 percent of the verified physical damage. These funds are designed to help borrowers pay for protective measures to minimize damages of the same kind in the future.
For small businesses, and most private non-profit organizations of all sizes, the SBA offers Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDLs) to help meet working capital needs caused by the disaster. EIDL assistance is available regardless of whether the business suffered any physical property damage.
Interest rates are as low as 2.562 percent for homeowners and renters, four percent for businesses and three percent for non-profit organizations with terms up to 30 years. Loan amounts and terms are set by the SBA and are based on each applicant’s financial condition.
“The SBA is strongly committed to providing the people affected by these storms and floods with the most effective and customer-focused response possible, to assist homeowners, renters, and businesses of all sizes with federal disaster loans,” said SBA Administrator Karen G. Mills. “Getting our businesses and communities up and running after a disaster is our highest priority.”
Disaster Loan Outreach Centers will be open as follows:
- Atmore Public Library: Today - January 9 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Escambia County Courthouse, Brewton: Monday, January 11 and Tuesday, January 12 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Individuals and businesses unable to visit one of the centers in person may obtain information and loan applications by calling the SBA’s Customer Service Center at 1-800-659-2955 (1-800-877-8339 for the hearing impaired), Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST, or by sending an e-mail to disastercustomerservice@sba.gov. Business loan applications can also be downloaded from the SBA Web site at www.sba.gov/services/disasterassistance. Northwest Escambia Baseball Registration Today

Registration for Northwest Escambia baseball and softball begins Saturday for ages 3 to 18 for Wee ball to big league.
Registration fees are: 1st child, $35, 2nd child: $25, 3rd child: free. Children will be measured and a $20 uniform deposit collected at registration. A copy of each child’s birth certificate is required.
There will also be a cleat swap…bring a pair of outgrown cleats and trade/swap while supplies last.
NWE registration will be held from 10 a.m. until noon January 9, 16 and 23 at Bradberry Park in Walnut Hill.
Century Thrift Store Reopens Today

If you are looking for bargains, there’s a chance to find them Saturday in Century.
On Saturday, the Century United Methodist Church Odds ‘N Ends thrift store will reopen for 2010. The store is located across from the church at 531 Church Street. Hours are 9 a.m. to 11 a.m..
The store features a selection of toys, kitchen items, linens and gift items, but does not sell clothing. When the store opens Saturday, there will be two chairs and a small couch available.
“There are no expensive items,” said Minister Janet Lee. “This is a ministry for our community, with all proceeds going to the Century United Methodist Church’s mission projects.”
The store is normally open the first and third Saturdays of the month from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Delayed Christmas Play Tonight

A school Christmas play that delayed by flooding in mid-December will be held tonight.
The Byrneville Elementary School’s Grade 3-5 Christmas Program that was to be held December 15 will be held at 5:00 this evening at Northview High School’s theatre.

High temperatures Friday were anything but high — some of our North Escambia communities stayed below the freezing mark all day. And tonight is going to be the coldest night we have had so far with mercury plummeting to about 15. Wind chills by Saturday morning are forecast to be in the single digits.
High temperatures Friday were: 30 in Bratt, 31 in Walnut Hill, 31 in Century, 33 in Molino and 33 in Cantonment.
A hard freeze warning continues in effect tonight and Saturday morning.

Congressman To Hold Health Care Town Hall

Congressman Jeff Miller will hold an open town hall meeting on health care Friday evening in Pensacola.
Miller is inviting interested persons to attend the meeting and ask questions or make comments about the pending national health care legislation.
The Pensacola Health Care Town Hall Meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at the WSRE Amos Performance Center at the corner of 12th Avenue and College Boulevard (near PJC and the airport).
