Property Taxes Due By Today

All 2009 real estate and tangible personal property taxes must be paid by 5 p.m. today to prevent being advertised as delinquent, adding advertising costs to the final tax bill.
The delinquent ad will be published in the Pensacola News Journal and posted on the tax collector’s web site beginning May 6. Tax payments must be made in person, online at www.escambiataxcollector.com, or on the automated telephone number (800) 601-1055 by 5 p.m. Friday to avoid the additional advertising costs.

Jay Pro Rodeo Tonight, Saturday; Get Free Childrens Tickets From NE

The 8th Annual Jay Pro Rodeo will be held tonight and Saturday night — rescheduled by last weekend’s rainy weather.
Gates open at 6 p..m. and the rodeo begins at 8 p.m. There will be musical entertainment, plus free moon bounces and activities for the children. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children 2-12 and children under 2 are free. All tickets and fliers will still be good for the new date.
The Jay Pro Rodeo is sponsored by the Jay Quarterback Club, Jay High SGA, FRIENDS (a community service organization) and the Ted May Arena, located a half mile east of the red light on Highway 4. All proceeds will benefit local youth programs and Relay for Life.

Jay To Celebrate Old Fashion Day

Jay will turn back the clock on Saturday for Old Fashion Day.
The event at the Jay Historical Society Museum will feature quilting, candle making, butter churning, corn grinding, story telling, pottery making and a petting zoo. There will also be music and entertainment all day, and plenty of old fashioned games.
Members and participants will be dressed for “Early Pioneer Days” during the event.
The event takes place at 3946 Highway4 in Jay from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Escambia Prepares For Gulf Oil Slick; Cleans Up Jet Fuel Spill

Escambia County escaped an environmental disaster after thousands of gallons of aviation fuel was found spilled in the Intercoastal Waterway near Perdido Key. Meanwhile, the county commission will hold an emergency meeting this afternoon to prepare for a possible response to the Deepwater Horizon oil plume making its way across the Gulf of Mexico.
The Escambia County Commission has scheduled a special emergency meeting for 3:00 this afternoon to discuss any Escambia County response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.The oil slick continues to grow from the April 20 explosion of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig 41 miles from the Louisiana shore. As of late Tuesday, the oil sheen was 1,800 square miles — larger than Rhode Island. The wrecked platform site continues to gush about 42,000 gallons a day.
Tuesday afternoon, officials from BP, the company leasing the oil platform, said that efforts to contain the spill have failed to work so far. Later this week, they will use another oil rig towed to the site to drill a relief well, but will take three months. In the meantime, BP officials said 4.2 million gallons of oil cold flow into the Gulf of Mexico.
Officials are considering setting fire to the oil slick as early a today in an attempt to avert a possible ecological disaster that is possible from Louisiana to Florida.
Gov. Charlie Crist, who took a Coast Guard flight out of Mobile Tuesday to see the spill, that he is closely watching the situation, saying that it should “give pause” to those thinking about oil drilling off the Florida coast.
But Crist didn’t say he had changed his mind about supporting offshore drilling. “If this doesn’t give somebody pause, there’s something wrong, I think,” Crist said when asked how the spill had affected his thinking on drilling. “This is a pretty new rig. I’ve always said it would need to be far enough, safe enough, and clean enough.” The rig in question appears not to have been any of those, Crist said.
Forecasts from the National Weather Service indicate that winds from the north will help keep oil away from the shoreline through Wednesday. The winds are forecast to shift to the southeast after Wednesday.
Jet Fuel Spill
The Coast Guard still has not determined the source of a jet fuel spill into the Intercoastal Waterway. The mile-long concentration of fuel is expected to have a minimal environmental impact, officials said. The fuel is believed to have leaked from a barge passing through the waterway about 3 p.m. Monday.
Officials first believed that JP-8 jet fuel used the military was from a barge making a delivery to Pensacola Naval Air Station, but there was no evidence found. The cleanup could cost the county well over $100,000.

Traffic Watch: Highway 97 At Highway 29 Construction Delays Today

Motorists can expect possible delays at and near the intersection of Highway 97 and Highway 29 in Molino today as crews from Panhandle Grading & Paving perform resurfacing operations.
According to the Florida Department of Transportation, drivers can expect intermittent land restrictions in the area, and drivers are reminded to use caution, and to watch for construction workers and equipment entering and exiting the roadway.
The work is part of the $5.7 million resurfacing project on Highway 97 from Highway 95A to the Alabama state line. The 22 mile project is scheduled to be complete in the fall.
Rep. Bonner Staffer To Visit

A staff member from the office of U.S. Representative Joe Bonner (R-AL) will visit Escambia County (Ala.) on Wednesday to meet with any constituents who who may be experiencing difficulties with the federal government and who are seeking the congressman’s assistance in resolving these problems.
The Bonner staffer will be available at Atmore City Hall between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m., and at the Brewton City Hall from 11:15 to 12:15 p.m. on Thursday.

The Northview Lady Chiefs fell 3-2 in Regional play against Sneads tonight. The Northview boys advanced with a 5-2 win over Baker in District play tonight, and the Jay Royals beat Ponce de Leon 12-2

Northview, Jay In Tournament Play Today (With Monday Scores)

Area coaches are asking local fans to turn out in force in Bratt or Baker today as Northview and Jay take part regional and district tournaments.
In the Florida High School Athletic Association softball regional quarterfinals, the District 1-2A champion Lady Chiefs take on District 2-2A runner up Sneads at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Bratt. Admission is $6 for all ages with no passes.
In the District 1-2A baseball district tournament in Baker, Northview and Jay are the two top seeds, separated only by a coin toss that put Jay in the top spot. Monday, Ponce de Leon beat Freeport 9-8, advancing to play Jay in the first semifinal at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Also Monday, Baker beat Pensacola Christian Academy 8-7, advancing to face Northview at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the second semifinal game.
