Area Events Planned For Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
January 15, 2011
Parades and special events will honor the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. across the area on Monday.
Century:
The Century-Flomaton Improvement Association will honor Dr. King with a motorcade in Century Monday morning. The parade will line up at the old Carver School on Pond Street at 8 a.m. The motorcade will roll at 9:00 and will end at the Ag Building on West Highway 4 by about 10:00. A program and celebration will follow in the Ag Building at 10:00. with a special speaker.
Flomaton:
The Flomaton Martin Luther King walk will take place at 9 a.m. on Martin Luther King Drive. A program will follow at Damascus Baptist Church with special speaker Mona Simmon.
Atmore:
Parade, Line up 9 a.m. begins 10 a.m. at Houston Avery Park, follows Martin Luther King Avenue, to Carver Avenue, Ashley Street, Main Street, McRae Street and ending at Escambia County High School. A program will follow in the high school’s Hodnette Auditorium. Keynote speaker will be ECHS principal Zickeyous Byrd. Free bay lunches will be served.
Pensacola:
Parade, 11 a.m., downtown. An “After Parade Gathering” will be held from 2-5 p.m. at the DeVilliers Cultural Heritage Museum located at 500 W. Belmont Street with music, art and food.

NWE Registration Continues Today

Northwest Escambia Little League registration continues today in Walnut Hill.
Registration will be from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday January 15 and 22 at Bradberry Park for ages three to 18. A copy of the child’s birth certificate is required for registration.
Registration fees are $40 for the first child, $30 for the second child and free for additional children. The child will be measured for their uniform, and there will be a $20 deposit toward each child’s uniform fee.

A local church is reaching out and helping those in need stay a bit warmer this winter.
The Century United Methodist Church will hold a coat giveaway today beginning at 9 a.m. The church is located at 530 Church Street in Century. Each person is limited to one item.

Tired Of Drugs: Mom, Daughter Plan Drug Program Tonight

A Cottage Hill mother and daughter grew tired of hearing about meth labs and drugs in their community, so they decided to step up and do something about the problem.
“Because we have had such a problem with meth lab busts and other drug related issues, my daughter and I have taken it upon ourselves and our church to hold a community drug awareness seminar,” Marsha Ryland said.
Marsha Ryland and her daughter Amanda organized a drug awareness program that will be held tonight at the First Baptist Church of Cottage Hill. A guest speaker from the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division will present a powerful PowerPoint presentation. The signs of drug abuse will be explained, along with information on how to help someone that might already have a drug problem.
The drug awareness program will take place at 6:30 tonight at the First Baptist Church of Cottage Hill, 230 Williams Ditch Road in Cantonment. Refreshments will be provided.

Ticket Sales Begin For Miss Northview Pageant

Tickets will be on sale today and tomorrow for the annual Miss Northview High School Pageant which will be held Saturday, January 29 at 7:00 in the school auditorium. The pageant is sponsored by the Northview High Varsity Cheerleaders.
Tickets go on sale on Tuesday at 8 a.m. for Miss NHS contestants only. All others can purchase their tickets beginning Wednesday at 8 a.m. All tickets can be purchased in the Northview front office; tickets will not be sold at the door. Admission is $6 per person.
