Town Hall Meetings: Sen. Evers In Jay; Rep. Broxson In Century

The North Escambia area’s state senator and representative are both holding town hall meetings in the coming days.

Senator Greg Evers will hold a town hall meeting Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the Jay Community Center, 5259 Booker Lane.

Evers plans to provide information on recent legislative changes, and discuss key issues facing Northwest Florida communities and the state going into the 2012 Legislative Session.

Representative Doug Broxson will hold a town hall meeting next Tuesday in Century.

Representative Broxson plans to listen to the specific concerns of constituents in the area and hear their priorities for the next legislative session. The meeting will take place at the Century Chamber of Commerce, 7811 North Century Boulevard, beginning at 1:30.

Learn About 4-H During Saturday Fun Day In Molino

The Northview 4-H Club will sponsor an informational Fun Day this Saturday. The event will take place at Aldersgate UMC on Highway 29 in Molino from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

4-H is a youth development program facilitated by the Escambia County Extension Office, offering programs that support the “learn by doing” philosophy. Some of the activities, done individually or in groups, include shooting sports, public speaking, photography, youth legislature, cooking and animal husbandry. All activities are done with an emphasis on personal responsibility and safety.

All school age children are eligible to participate, and there is no cost to join.

Students are invited to stop by the free event Saturday, learn about 4-H and stay to play.

Santa Rosa Wildfire Update

A wildfire in Santa Rosa County that threatened several homes earlier today is now nearly controlled.

The 20-acre fire is in the area of Santa Monica Street, near the intersection of Avalon Boulevard and I-10.

Florida Forest Service crews are on the scene reinforcing the lines and the fire was 95 percent contained. All residents have returned home after four homes were evacuated because of smoke

Crews will continue to monitor this fire for the next several days and we urge drivers on I-10, Avalon Boulevard and surrounding roads to be cautious if they encounter smoke. Debris inside the fire lines will continue to burn for the next several days but warning signs will be posted.

Two Time Super Bowl Champ Anthony Pleasant To Attend Park Dedication

Two-time Super Bowl champion Anthony Pleasant will be in Century Saturday night as the town dedicates the sports facility that bears his name.

The Anthony Pleasant Sports Complex will be dedicated at 6 p.m.  The celebration will include free hot dogs and soft drinks.

The 22 -acre park was named after Century native  Pleasant (pictured), a former pro football player selected in the third round of the 1990 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns.  During his 14 year NFL career, Pleasant played for the Browns, the Baltimore Ravens, the Atlanta Falcons, the New York Jets, the San Francisco 49ers and the New England Patriots. He played a total of 202 NFL games and racked up 58 sacks and two interceptions.

The 1986 Century High School graduate earned two Super Bowl rings with the New England Patriots.

Pleasant is currently the defensive line coach for the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs.

Anthony Pleasant Park is located off Highway 4 just east of North Century Boulevard; turn right after crossing the railroad tracks.

Molino Park Elementary Library Open Today

The Molino Park Elementary School Library will be open from 9 a.m. until noon today for students and their parents.

The library will be open from 9 a.m. until noon. There will be guest readers, along with activities related to the stories that are read. Parents and students can check out books, and students can take Accelerated Reader tests.

Parents are required to stay with their children, and books that are checked out are due back August 10.

The library will also be open from 9 a.m. until noon on July 27 and August 10.

      Escambia Man Indicted In Death Of His Grandfather

      An Escambia County man was indicted on first degree murder charges for the murder of his grandfather.

      The indictment was returned Wednesday Thomas Isaiah Bunch for the murder of Cleo Kennedy.  The 69-year old Kennedy suffered a single gunshot would to his head while in his yard on Fiesta Drive on June 26.

      Bunch is schedule to be arraigned July 21 and remains jailed without bond.

      Fiesta Drive is located near the Highway 29 and I-10 interchange.

      Northview Quarterback Club Meets Monday Night

      The Northview High school Quarterback Club will meet Monday night at the school.

      Everyone is welcome to attend the 7 p.m. meeting at support the Chiefs as they get ready for the upcoming season. Membership is only $10 per family.

      Century Council Meets Tonight

      July 11, 2011

      The Century Town Council will hold their first meeting in over a month tonight with ordinary business on the agenda.

      Mary Beth Washnock from the West Florida Regional Planning Council, Sandra Slay from Escambia County Code Enforcement and Jewel Nguyen from BRACE (Be Ready Alliance Coordinating for Emergencies) are scheduled to address the council. In addition, Robert Hudson, the town’s accountant, is set to discuss financial reports and schedule a budget workshop with the council.

      The Century Town Council last met June 6. Their June 20 meeting was canceled due to the lack of quorum, and their July 4 meeting was rescheduled for today due to the Independence Day holiday.

      The council will meet at 7 p.m. at the Century Town Hall. The meeting is open to the public.
