Day Camp To Teach Cooking To Kids

Youth ages 8-12 can learn cooking basics at a “Cooking by the Cup Full” day camp next week offered by Escambia County Extension.

Participants will learn kitchen skills, preparation, decorating and healthy lifestyles. In addition, the youth will explore the origins of baking ingredients.  The day camp will also involve several outdoors activities — wearing closed-toe shoes is recommended.

The camp is August 17 from 9 a.m. until noon at the Langley Bell 4-H Center, 4810 West Nine Mile Road. The day camp is open to youth ages 8-12 and limited to the first 12 youth registered. The cost is $5 per person and preregistration is required by Wednesday, August 10.

Congressman Miller’s Staff To Hold Office Hours In Century, Jay

Congressman Jeff Miller’s staff will be conducting mobile office hours in Century and Jay on Wednesday.

Several members of Miller’s staff will be on hand to answer questions about problems with federal agencies or issues affecting residents in the First Congressional District.

“We are trying to make contact with our office as convenient as possible for all of our constituents,” Miller said. “Instead of having people come to the office, we’ve decided to bring the office to them.

Miller’s staff will be at the Century Chamber of Commerce at 7811 North Century Boulevard from 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. and at the Jay City Hall at 3695 Highway 4 from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.

Public Input Invited In Beulah To Barrineau Park Development Plan

Monday morning, Escambia County residents will have an opportunity to comment about a detailed long-term plan for thousands of acres from Beulah to Barrineau Park.

The Escambia County Planning Board will hold a public workshop on the Preliminary Detailed Specific Area Plan at 8:35 Monday morning in the Board Meeting Room at the Escambia County Central Office Complex, 3363 West Park Place.

As part of the county’s adopted Optional Sector Plan, the Detailed Specific Area Plan encompasses approximately 15,000 acres of land north of Interstate 10, south of Barrineau Park Road and west of Highway 29. It is a long-term conceptual planning project aimed at encouraging orderly, logical growth and economic development in north Escambia County that incorporates road networks, parks, schools, as well as commercial and residential projects.

Qualifying Ends Today For October Century Election

Three candidates have officially qualified to appear on the October ballot in Century’s general election, while two prefiled candidates have not yet completed the qualification process.

By the close of business Thursday, incumbent Mayor Freddie McCall and challenger Henry Hawkins both finished the qualification process, as did incumbent Seat 1 council member Ann Brooks.

Brooks’ challenger, Pamela MacArthur, and the only prefiled candidate to date for Seat 2 on the town council, Annie Carter Savage, had not yet completed the qualification process, according to the Escambia County Supervisor of Elections website.

The qualifying period for the fall ballot in Century ends Friday. Qualifying papers will be accepted from 8 a.m. until noon at the Century Town Hall and the  Supervisor of Elections Office in Pensacola.

Saturday morning, NorthEscambia.com will publish the final list of candidates qualified to seek office in Century this year.

Monthly Barrineau Park Music Tonight

There will be plenty of good entertainment on stage tonight in Barrineau Park — and it’s free. The monthly Barrineau Park Music Night will be tonight at the Barrineau Park Community Center. The featured local groups tonight are The Wayfarers and and Tommy Fillingim & Friends.

The singing starts at 6:30 p.m. Food and refreshments will  be available beginning at 6 p.m.

The event is family-friendly — no alcohol is permitted on the property, and no smoking is allowed in or near the building.

Water Main Break Causes Old Palafox, Nine Road Traffic Problems

A water main break near Nine Mile Road in causing traffic problems this afternoon.

Northbound traffic on Old Palafox near Nine Mile Road is closed due to the water main break. Traffic is being detoured onto Nine Mile Road to Chemstrand Road to Ten Mile Road back to Old Palafox until further notice, according to Florida Department of Transportation.

The broken ECUA main has the water off in the following areas: Nine Mile Road from Holsberry Lane west to Highway 29, Old Palafox Street south to Hood Drive, Old Palafox north to 9 1/2 Mile Road. ECUA crews are on site repairing the water main.
