Flomaton Area Residents Asked To Greet Returning Soldier

Area residents are invited so their support Saturday in Flomaton as a native son returns home from serving in Afghanistan.
Chris Burnham will arrive via Highway 113 Saturday morning. Community members are asked to line the highway from the Highway 113 and Highway 31 intersection to the Holt Subdivision with American flags and homemade signs.
Organizers are asking to supporters to line up beginning about 9 a.m. for an arrival sometime close to 10 a.m.
Burham has served in Afghanistan in the Air Force Reserves for about six months. The Master Sergeant has been in the service for 19 years — four year active service and 15 in the reserves.
Century To Consider Draft Budget In Hearing Today

The Century Town Council will hold a public hearing on the town’s new budget at 5:01 this afternoon to be followed by a regular council meeting.
“The draft budget becomes the tentative budget after the first reading on September 8,” Town Clerk Leslie Gonzalez said. The budget will be formally adopted at a later date. According to the agenda for the hearing, there is no property tax increase planned for Century residents this year.
A regular council meeting rescheduled due to Monday’s Labor Day holiday will follow at 5:15 p.m.
Both meetings are open to the public at the Century Town Hall.
Bratt, Molino Park, Jim Allen Open Houses Tonight

Three North Escambia elementary schools will hold open house events tonight for parents and caregivers to learn more about their child’s school. Events will be held as follows:
- Bratt — 6:30 p.m.
- Jim Allen — 6-7 p.m.
- Molino Park — 6:30 p.m.

Tropical Storms: Tracking Nate In The Gulf, Maria In Atlantic

Two new tropical storms formed Wednesday — Nate this afternoon in the Gulf of Mexico and Maria in the Atlantic. Neither storm appears to be a threat to the U.S. at the present time; however, the steering currents on Nate in the Gulf are weak, possibly leading to a change in the forecast path.

Gulf Power Reports 7,000 In The Dark; Repairs By Tuesday Night

About 7,000 Gulf Power customers in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties were without power as of 7:00 Monday night.
“We have been working all weekend to restore power but the high winds have caused a large number of outages,” said Jeff Rogers, spokesperson with Gulf Power. “We appreciate everyone’s continued patience as we patrol and repair the downed lines.”
As of 7 p.m. Monday, the utility reported that approximately 19,500 customers were without power throughout its service territory.
“Those outages represented 800 different locations across the area we serve,” said Rogers.” Our crews will be working through the night, and we’re using all available resources including contracted crews. We hope to have everyone’s power restored by tomorrow evening.”
Escambia River Electric Cooperative reported all customers across their service territory in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties were back on by 8:10 p.m Monday. An exact number of EREC customers that lost power Monday was not available.

TD Lee: Moving Closer; Winds Gust 50+ Recorded
September 5, 2011
At 1 p.m. the remnants of the center of Tropical Depression Lee was about 40 miles west of downtown Mobile and moving east at 22 mph. Maximum sustained winds were about 40 mph.
The extratropical system will continue to move east and northeast with gusts up to 50 mph. Heavy rainfall is still possible, along with high winds. There is a wind advisory in effect for frequent wind gusts in the local area from 30 to 35 mph with occasional gusts to 45 mph.
A peak wind gust of 48 mph was recorded so far this afternoon in Walnut Hill, while Jay had a peak gust of 57 mph.
