Regional Electronics, Household Hazardous Waste Roundup Today

Escambia County (Fla.) residents are encouraged to drop off their electronics, household hazardous waste (HHW) and other items not accepted into the regular garbage stream at a Regional Roundup today from 8 a.m. until noon at the former Carver Middle School at 150 East Pond Street in Century.

Businesses and residents of Escambia County (Fla.) can dispose of all types of clean, dry, recyclable electronics including computers, monitors and terminals, keyboards, mice, printers, TVs, copiers, gaming systems, remotes, fax machines, VCRs, stereo systems, cell phones and telephones. Electronics that have been gutted will not be accepted.

HHW items can cause injury if handled improperly. These items will usually have a warning or cautionary statement on their labels using terms such as flammable, corrosive, poison or toxic, and include items such as swimming pool chemicals, cleaners, drain openers, paint and paint products, fuels, gases, lawn and garden chemicals, aerosol cans and automotive repair and maintenance products.

All electronics, household hazardous waste and tires are recycled.

The event is open to all Escambia County (Fla.) residents and businesses, not just those in Century. Residents and businesses from Alabama are not allowed to participate in the event.

Sawmill Festival, Car Show Today In Century

The second annual Sawmill Day and Car Show will take place Saturday at the Historical Park at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Fourth Street in Century.

The event will feature continuous entertainment, a car show, Old 100 logging and sawmill steam locomotive restoration in progress, an inside yard sale, a Turtle Point petting zoo, food and refreshments.

Farmer’s Market Opens Today In Cantonment

The Market at Saint Monica’s will begin its second season today from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the parking lot of Saint Monica’s Episcopal Church, 699 South Highway 95-A, Cantonment.

“Like many other communities acr oss the country, we are seeing a growth in demand for locally grown produce and fresh prepared food products,” said Viven Welch, market manager. “We have ramped up our vendor recruitment and promotion efforts to meet this demand and expect to offer the community access to more vendors and a broader range of produce and prepared food in the 2012 season.”

Over a dozen vendors are scheduled to take part in opening day, including: Po Man’s Pickin’s, Wolfe’s Quail Farm, Ladybug Acres All-Natural Growers, M&K Mayhaws, Smocked with Love, Polly & Glenda’s Baked Goods, Steve’s Farm, BBG’s Country Corner, Pawless Mini Farm, Putter’s Plants, Susan’s Hot Dog’s, Lyle Morreau, Jackie’s Snocones, St. Monica’s Quilters and St. Monica’s Women’s Group.

In addition to new and returning vendors, opening day will feature a special Cinco de Mayo theme, music by Mr. V’s DJ Service, pulled pork sandwiches, burritos, hot dogs and special children’s activities.

Organizers said opening day festivities are just the start of the activities planned for the 2nd season. Future plans include canning demonstrations, along with agricultural, nutrition and health information.

Flomaton, Wickburg Split Series, Meet Today In Round 3 Playoffs

The Flomaton Hurricanes and Wicksburg split a double header Friday in Flomaton, setting up a Saturday showdown in Class 2A Round 3 playoffs.

In the first game, Flomaton defeated Wicksburg 1-0  in 12 innings.

In the second game of the  series, Wickburg beat Flomaton 10-0.  Wicksburg scored two in the fourth, six in the fifth inning and added two in the sixth.

Flomaton (28-5) and Wickburg (22-11) will meet at high noon Saturday at Hurricane Park in Flomaton.

Yard Sale Today Benefits Baby Blaze

A benefit yard sale and bake sale is going on today from 8 a.m. until at Flomaton First Baptist Church for the medical bills of Blaze Johnson (son of Chris “Squeaky” and Katherine Johnson).

Friday And Saturday Events: Rodeo, Relay, Sawmill Day, Mayfest, May Day, Music Night, Yard Sales

Several big events are going on Friday and Saturday in the North Escambia area, including:

Tate FFA Rodeo  (Fri-Sat)

The 21st Annual Tate FFA Alumni Foundation Rodeo will be held Friday and Saturday nights.

The rodeo will be held at the Escambia County Equestrian Center at 7750 Mobile Highway in Beulah on May 4 and 5 at 7:30 nightly. Advance tickets are available at Hill Kelly Dodge and Farm and Nursery Mart. Advanced tickets are $8 for adults, $3 for children. At the gates, tickets will be $10 for adults and $5 for children.

A free hands-on rodeo will be held for special needs persons Saturday morning, May 5 beginning with breakfast at 7:00 followed by safe rodeo events about 8:00.  There will be bull (barrel) riding, barrel racing (stick horses), calf roping (hay bales with cow head), photos with rodeo queens, a petting zoo, wagon rides, beanie bag toss and more.

2012 Relay for Life of Greater Escambia — Tate High School (Fri-Sat)

The 2012 Relay for Life of Greater Escambia will begin with an opening ceremony at 6 p.m. Friday at Tate High School.  The “Thunder Lap” will be at 6:30 p.m., followed by the Survivor Lap at 6:40 p.m. The Luminaria Ceremony will be at 9 p.m. The Relay will continue until noon Saturday.

Century — Sawmill Day (Sat)

Flomaton — May Day (Sat)

Saturday will be May Day in Flomaton. Events begin with 5K run at 8 a.m. on Martin Luther King Drive, followed by food, entertainment, games, water slides for the children, BBQ rib cook-off and more.

Flomaton – Benefit Yard Sale (Sat)

Atmore National Day Of Prayer Events Moved Indoors

Century and Atmore are marking the National Day of Prayer today.

Government, community and other leaders gathered in Century this morning. (Details and photos Friday morning here on NorthEscambia.com)

In Atmore, the National Day of Prayer will be celebrated with multiple events at Tom Byrne Park on Lindberg Avenue on Thursday, May 3. The day’s events will include:

  • Prayer Service – 5:30 – 6 p.m.   A prayer service for the community and nation.
  • Childrens Prayer Event – 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.  New this year is an event for children K-6  to participate in an age appropriate prayer time and balloon release.
  • Bible Reading – 6 – 6:30 p.m.  The entire Bible will be read as a prayer and blessing over the community.

Due to rain, the 5:30 Prayer Service, Children’s Prayer Event and 6:00 Bible Reading will be held at Escambia County High School in Atmore. Adult events will be held in the new gym; children’s events will be held in the old gym.

Lane Restrictions Today On 9 Mile In Beulah

Today, motorists can expect lane restrictions on Nine Mile Road at the I-10 overpass from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. as crews from Transfield Services replace lights on the bridge.

Drivers are reminded to pay attention to the speed limit when traveling through the construction area, and to use caution, especially at night when driving in work zones, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.
