Workshop Tonight: Century To Debate Possible Barnyard Animal Ban

November 4, 2013

The Town of Century will hold a special workshop tonight to discuss an animal control ordinance that will potentially limit or prohibit barnyard animals in the town limits.

Back on October 21, the town considered an ordinance that would make it illegal to keep any horse, mule, donkey, goat, sheep or cattle within the town limits, except on property zoned as agricultural.  There are only three parcels of land in the town currently zoned agricultural.

But that barnyard animal ordinance was put out to pasture over numerous unanswered questions. There were concerns over if, and how, current animals might be grandfathered in and the possibility of variances being issued for some property owners.

Council President Ann Brooks said any barnyard animal ordinance should include provisions for minimum acreage and fencing.

Town consultant Debbie Nickles was tasked with researching options and returning with ideas and possibly a new ordinance for consideration during tonight’s workshop. The workshop begins at 6 p.m., just prior to the council’s regular meeting at 7 p.m.

Tate, Crestview, Niceville Shootout Tonight To Determine Playoff Spots

November 4, 2013

Update to this story….click here.

A three-way “shootout” between Tate, Crestview and Niceville tonight will determine which of the two teams will head to the playoffs.

The shootout, to be held at 7:00 at Niceville, will determine the district champion and runner-up.

The night will begin with one quarter of play between the Tate Aggies and Crestview. The winner advances to play one quarter against Niceville.

If Niceville wins, they take the district title and their opponent (the winner of the Tate-Crestview quarter) will be district runner-up with both teams advancing to the playoffs on November 14.

If Niceville loses, the winner takes the district title and Niceville would then play the loser of the Tate-Crestview quarter with the prevailing team named district runner-up.

Time Change: Fall Back, Replace Smoke Alarm Batteries

November 2, 2013

Don’t forget to “fall back” and set your clocks back one hour night before heading off to bed Saturday night as daylight savings time comes to an end.

Escambia Fire Rescue is also reminding residents that it’s time to make another potentially lifesaving change — replace the batteries in your smoke alarm.

“Most home fire fatalities occur overnight when most families are sleeping,” according to Escambia Fire Rescue. “Changing the batteries in your smoke alarms and performing other maintenance is a simple, effective way to reduce home fire deaths. Children and senior citizens are most at risk and a working smoke alarm can give the extra seconds needed to get out safely.”

In addition to checking smoke alarms, residents should plan “two ways out” and practice escape routes with the entire family. Families should also prepare a fire safety kit that includes working flashlights and fresh batteries.

Each year more than 3,000 people lose their lives in residential fires. The majority of these deaths are a result of unattended cooking. It is strongly recommended that someone always be present when cooking on top of the stove and that smoke alarms be located properly and in working order. Test the smoke alarm monthly and change the batteries at least every six months.

Sheriff: Exercise Caution This Evening Due To Halloween

October 31, 2013

Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan is reminding residents to be careful this evening as young people are out for Halloween.

“Drivers should exercise extra caution Thursday night,” said  Morgan, “especially when driving through neighborhoods, due to the increase in pedestrian traffic. We want everyone to have a good time and be safe.”

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office is offering these Halloween safety tips for adults:

  • Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways. Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. so be especially alert for kids during those hours.
  • Notify Law enforcement authorities immediately of any suspicious or unlawful activity.
  • Obtain flashlights with fresh batteries for all children and their escorts.
  • A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children on their neighborhood routes.
  • Trick-or-treaters should wear reflective clothing; carry a bright orange bag, a flashlight or glow stick; walk on sidewalks or left sides of roads facing traffic.
  • Trick-or-treat in an area you are familiar with.
  • Go to houses you know, with the porch light on.
  • Adults should be sure to plan a safe way home before drinking, and designate a sober driver if you’re drinking. If you drink too much, take a taxi, take a bus, or call a sober friend
