NorthEscambia.com will honor several North Escambia residents as North Escambia Persons of the Year as 2013 comes to a close, and we need your help today.

We are asking our readers to nominate individuals that they believe made a difference in North Escambia during 2013. We will choose several of them to be named as a 2013 North Escambia Person of the Year. The awards are our way of saying thanks to those that have worked to improve our lives in the North Escambia area during the past year.

We are not necessarily looking for a person with a long list of accomplishments. We are looking for people that have given of themselves — often quietly — to help others and the communities of North Escambia during  the past year.

To nominate someone, please email their name, contact information (if known), and the reason why you believe they should be a Person of the Year. The person must either be a resident of North Escambia, work in North Escambia or otherwise have significantly impacted North Escambia in some way. For the purposes of this award, we will define North Escambia as being Cantonment north to the Alabama line in Escambia County, Florida

Tax Offices Open On New Year’s Eve For Last Day Of Discount

All four Escambia County Tax Collector offices will be open regular business hours on New Year’s Eve, according to Tax Collector Janet Holley. Persons paying their 2013 real estate and tangible personal property taxes who want to receive the three percent discount must make their payments by December 31.

In order to receive the three percent discount and have your tax payment receipted with a December date, payments must be:

• received in the tax office by close of business December 31 or
• made on the tax collector website by midnight December 31.

Additionally, payments mailed with a December 31 postmark or left in a 24-hour drop boxes after hours on that date will receive the three percent discount but will be dated in January.

Residents are encouraged to pay  taxes online; however, other options are available, such as payment by phone, by mail, and in person at any of the four convenient tax collector offices.

Drive thru service and 24-hour drop boxes are available at all locations.

Escambia County Tax Collector Offices will be open regular business hours — 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. — on Tuesday.

Walnut Hill Teen To Hold Fundraiser To Benefit Humane Society

A Walnut Hill teen will be hard at work Saturday to raise money for the Humane Society of the United States.

Anna Donald, 17, will hold a “Bread of Life” bake sale at Tom Byrne Park in Atmore from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday featuring a variety of baked goods, hot chocolate and a small concert featuring local musicians.

“A few years ago, God used animals to save my life. What better time than at Christmas to return the favor and give them some much-needed love this holiday season, Donald said. She said her fundraising plans are based upon a verse from Proverbs — “A righteous man has regard for his beast but the mercy of the wicked are cruel”.

ECUA Christmas Trash Pickup Schedule

For the Christmas and New Year’s holiday week, ECUA residential Monday and Tuesday pickups will be as normal. Wednesday pickups will be on Thursday; Thursday pickups will be on Friday and Friday pickups will be on Saturday.

For commercial customers (dumpsters), there is no change to pickup days.

The ECUA offices will be closed on Tuesday, December 24, Wednesday, December 25 and Wednesday, January 1.
