Learn About Local Option Sales Tax At Meeting Monday At Hillcrest

As the election on Tuesday, November 4, approaches Escambia County citizens are encouraged to be informed about the proposals and candidates on the ballot.
The Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) was first approved by Escambia County voters in 1992. It was again approved in 1997 and 2006 with the current round expiring in 2017. In an effort to engage citizens about the details of the already existing Local Option Sales Tax, the County has hosted a series of public meetings throughout its five commission districts.

A presentation and brief video will be shown to illustrate projects that Local Option Sales Tax III has funded and county staff will be available to answer questions.
Family Fun: Environmental Center Open House, Fall Festivals, Public Safety Day, Soul Bowl

Here are some family fun activities taking place in Escambia County today:
Roy Hyatt Environmental Center Open House
The annual Roy Hyatt Environmental Center Open House and Silent Auction will take place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Face painting, bird watching on the bird bus, walk a trail, check out a silent auction, enjoy lunch and much more. Optional: Bring wish list items for the animals such as hand sanitizer, fresh fruit and greens, suet, wild bird seed, or sunflower bird seed. 1300 Tobias Road, Cantonment.
Little Escambia Baptist Fall Festival
Little Escambia Baptist Church in Flomaton will hold their fall festival from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Lots of games, rides, food, prized and bouncy house. Special guest musician and magician J. Carl Kelly will perform at 5 p.m. 445 Highway 113 in Flomaton. Everyone is welcome.
Soul Bowl and Public Safety Day at Community Maritime Park
The 24th Annual Soul Bowl, Pensacola’s cross-town youth football rivalry event will return to the Community Maritime Park stadium this Saturday, October 18 along with a Public Safety Day event just outside the stadium. Games will feature matchups in categories ranging from ages 5-14 years. Rounding out the day-long celebration will be delicious soul food and family-friendly entertainment. Community Public Safety Day with live demonstrations as well as fun educational and interactive activities will be provided by our local and regional law enforcement, fire and rescue agencies, and emergency responder personnel. Public Safety Day activities are free and will be at the Exhibition Field from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Ballgame admission is $8 at the door; parking is $5.
Town Of Century To Be Honored With Florida Chamber Foundation Award

The Florida Chamber Foundation will recognize the Town of Century next week for their commitment to regional economic development.
The town will receive the “Six Pillars Award” for the completion of the Century strategic plan to help the community create jobs and opportunities for business and families.
“We are strategically positioning the Town of Century to become a model community for how to recognize the benefits and opportunities available within a rural community,” said Brice Harris, director of Strategic Initiatives with the Office of Economic Development and co-director of the Haas Center for Business Research & Economic Development at the University of West Florida. “The Six Pillars Community designation establishes the Town of Century as a leader in this region and I believe our efforts will result in a stronger economy and better quality of life for our residents.”
The Haas Center authored Century’s recently finished strategic plan, funded by a $25,000 a Community Planning Technical Assistance Grant from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.
The Florida Chamber Foundation Six Pillars framework serves as an organizing force for strategic planning at local, regional and state levels.
The Town of Century Six Pillars plan includes a number of strategic goals, including:
- Leading the region in rural economic competitiveness and rural community revitalization, and
- Proactively leading the region in the development and delivery of innovative and relevant workforce training programs.

Program To Teach Parents About Bullying Today At Molino Park

Molino Park Elementary School will hold a free Parent Bullying Training program today at the school.
The program will be held at 6p.m. will include a free spaghetti dinner sponsored by the Molino Elementary School PTA. The program will be presented by Denise Manassa of the Community Drug & Alcohol Council.
The top three classes with the most family members in attendance at the presentation will win an ice cream party for their class.
Work Tonight On Nine Mile At Navy Federal

According to the Florida Department of Transportation, motorists can expect intermittent westbound lane closures on Nine Mile Road west of Interstate 10 near Heritage Oak Drive from 9:00 tonight until about 3:00 a.m. Friday as crews perform turn lane construction activities.
Drivers are reminded by FDOT to use caution when traveling in work zones. Work may be rescheduled in the event of inclement weather.
Reminder: No School Today For Escambia County Students

Escambia County School District students are out of school on Monday for a teacher planning day. Teachers and school staff members will work a regular day, participating in various professional development opportunities. Escambia students will return to class as usual on Tuesday.
The next day out of school for Escambia County students will be Veteran’s Day on November 11, following by Fall Break/Thanksgiving November 26-28.

One Of Two Escaped Prisoners Back Behind Bars

One of two inmates that escaped earlier this month from a Pensacola work release center is back behind bars.
Michael Jerome Jones, 54, was taken into custody Friday night and booked into the Escambia County Jail on an escape charge. Details surrounding Jones’ arrest have not yet been released by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the Florida Department of Corrections escaped from the Pensacola Community Release Center about 7:50 p.m. Friday, October 3. He was serving a one year, eight and a half month sentenced out of Escambia County for a felony driver’s license violation. He previously served several prison sentenced for a long list of convictions, including multiple forgery counts, burglary, grand theft, battery on a law enforcement office, resisting an officer with violence and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
A second inmate that escaped from the Pensacola CRC remains on the run.
On October 1, 35-year old Jonathan P. Porter escape from the Pensacola CRC. He was last seen running southbound on North “L” Street and may have been picked up by a female driving a 2012 white Nissan Versa four-door with California plates.
Porter is bald and blue eyed, between 6-feet and 6-feet, 2 inches tall, and weighs about 200 pounds. He was last seen at 8:29 a.m. wearing a white shirt and khaki pants. He has tear drop tattoos under both of his eyes, the name “Lisa” on his neck, “S-O-U-L” on this left fingers, “L-O-S-T” on his right fingers, along with numerous other tattoos.
According to Department of Corrections records, Porter was serving a 15-year sentence for a 2001 conviction for conspiracy to commit robbery with a gun or deadly weapon.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Porter should call their local law enforcement agency or 911.
The Pensacola Community Release Center is located at 3050 North L Street. The Pensacola CRC is under the supervision of the Century Correctional Institution.
