Barrineau Park Bridge Closed; Perdido River, Escambia River Flood Warning

Barrineau Park Road at the bridge crossing the Perdido River into Alabama is flooded due to the rising river. Escambia County has closed the road.

A flood warning has been issued for the Perdido River at Barrineau Park from Friday morning until Saturday afternoon. At 7 a.m. Thursday, the stage was 11.8 feet. Minor flooding is forecast; the flood stage is 13 feet. The river is forecast to rise above flood stage by tomorrow morning and continue to rise near 13.2 feet by early Saturday morning. The river will fall below flood stage by Saturday morning. At 13 feet, the Perdido River begins to leave it’s banks at the parking lot of Adventures Unlimited and threatens several permanently parked travel trailers.

A flood warning has been issue for the Escambia River at Century from late Friday night until further notice. At 8 a.m. Thursday, the state was 14.7 feet. Minor flooding is forecast. Flood stage is 17 feet. The Escambia River is forecast to rise above flood stage by Saturday morning and continue to rise to 18.1 feet by Sunday morning. At 17 feet, considerable flooding of lowlands will occur.

Walnut Hill Post Office Open Later For Tax Returns

April 15, 2015

One local post office will be open later than usual today for those last minute tax filers on this April 15 tax deadline.  The Walnut Hill Post Office, located on Highway 99A adjacent to Ernest Ward Middle School, will be open until 6 p.m.

According to the U.S. Postal Service, other area post offices will close today as follows:

  • Century, 4 p.m.
  • McDavid, 4 p.m.
  • Molino, 4 p.m.
  • Cantonment, 4:30 p.m.
  • Gonzalez, 5:00 p.m.
  • Pensacola – Jordan Street, 5:30 p.m.
  • Pensacola – Downtown, 4:30 p.m.
  • Jay 4 p.m.
  • Flomaton, 4:15 p.m.
  • Atmore, 4 p.m.

The U.S. Post Office in Walnut Hill is a contract facility operated by Escambia River Electric Cooperative. It normally closes at 3:30 p.m on weekdays.

Rain Cancels Northview Baseball; District Softball Tournament

This afternoon’s Rocky Bayou at Northview baseball game has been canceled due to weather.

The 1A district softball tournament games at Freeport today have been canceled due to weather.  Holmes County and Baker will play at 2 p.m. Tuesday; Northview will face Freeport Tuesday at noon — weather permitting.

Updated 3:30 p.m. to reflect new game time for Holmes and Baker.

Relay Life Events Today At UWF And Jay

April 11, 2015

Hundreds of cancer survivors, caregivers, volunteers, and teams of walkers from schools, companies, places of worship, and more will come together this weekend for the American Cancer Society at the University of West Florida Relay For Life  and Jay Relay for Life events.

The Jay Relay for Life will take place at Bray-Hendrick Park from 4-10 p.m. Saturday. In the event of bad weather, it will be moved inside the community center.

The University of West Florida Relay for Life has been moved insider the Commons Great Hall from 7 p.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday.

A touching Luminaria Ceremony, where candles are lit in honor and memory of locals who have battled cancer, will happen at 9 p.m. at both locations.

Free Tonight: Enjoy Great Music, Or A Night Of Nature

There are two free events tonight in the North Escambia area – one for the nature lover, and the other for the music lover.

Everyone is invited to a free night of entertainment at 6:30 tonight in the Northview High School Theater. The Northview High School Music Department will present a Spring Concert featuring the school’s Concert Band, Guitar Ensemble and Vocal Ensemble.

The Roy Hyatt Environmental Center will hold their annual “Night of Nature” from 5:30 until 8:30 tonight.  Visitors can meet owls from the Wildlife Sanctuary of Northwest Florida, gaze through telescopes with the Escambia Amateur Astronomy Association, visit the reptile room, observe insects of the night, and take a naturalist led hike through the woods.  There will be hotdogs, chips, water, and baked goods available for a small donation.  The event will be held even if it rains with alternative indoor activities. The event is free and open to the public. The center is located on Tobias Road in Cantonment. For more information, call (850) 937-2117.
