Century Won’t Take On Alabama Football; Reschedules Meeting

January 11, 2016

The Century Town Council won’t try to compete with the National Championship football game for attention.

The council normally meets the first and third Monday nights of each month, but the third Monday this month falls on the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. The council will traditionally reschedule that meeting for the second Monday night of January, but they decided more people are likely to watch the big game than attend a council meeting.

In yielding to Alabama and Clemson, the Century Town Council rescheduled their next regular council meeting for Tuesday, January 19 at 7 p.m.

The council does have a workshop meeting set for this week. At 5:30 p.m. Thursday, they will discuss the possible creation of a Community Redevelopment Agency.

Powerball Fever Sweeps The Area As Jackpot Climbs

January 9, 2016

The Powerball jackpot for tonight’s drawing is at $900 million — the largest lottery jackpot in American history. And those numbers may grow on Saturday.

The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292,201,338. But  someone has to win, right?

And those big dreams of winning have led to lines at lottery retailers across the area. And at the state line on Highway 97 in Davisville, those big dreams have led to traffic congestion and even longer lines being just a short distance from Alabama, one of just a handful of states that does not play the Powerball lottery.

There are three lottery retailers just south of Atmore in Davisville — the Grey Goose package store, a Diamond gas station and, just a few feet from the Piggly Wiggly grocery store -  the State Line Gift Shop. Back in April, Alice Dawson of Monroeville, AL, purchased a Quick Pick Powerball ticket at the State Line Gift Shop. And she was that someone — purchasing the only winning ticket that week for the $80 million drawing.

The winning numbers will be drawn at about 9:59 tonight, with the cutoff time for ticket sales at 9 p.m.

No Powerball Winners; Saturday’s Jackpot Now $800 Million

January 7, 2016

No one held a ticket with all the winning numbers in Wednesday’s estimated $524 million Powerball jackpot  — 47, 2, 63, 62, 11 and the Powerball of 17.

That means the jackpot rolls over to what will the largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history estimated at $800 million (or $496 million lump sum) for this Saturday. And that number could grow even higher.

The prize payout started at $450 million and surged to $524 million Wednesday night, the fourth largest Powerball jackpot of all time.

Late Wednesday afternoon, Powerball players swarmed two lottery retailers along Highway 97 at the state line in Davisville, creating a traffic backup at times. But overall, players found lines that moved relatively quickly.

Powerball is played by 44 states and the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

$500 Million Powerball Fever: Players Hope Store Will Be Lucky Again

January 6, 2016

The Powerball lottery grand prize climbed to $500 million on Wednesday after rolling over 17 times without a winner.

At the locally-owned State Line Gift Shop on Highway 97 in Davisville, Powerball players were making their plans for retirement, travel and all sorts of big dream purchases with their winnings.  They were hoping the store would prove to be lucky again —  Alice Dawson of Monroeville  purchased a winning $80 million Powerball Quick Pick at the store back in April.

While busy late Tuesday afternoon, the wait time at the State Line Gift Shop was relatively short with three clerks running terminals and quickly moving the lines along.

Jackpot prizes are paid in 30 annual installments or as a one-time, lump-sum payment. The winner of tonight’s drawing could take a lump sum payment estimated at $306 million.

The winning numbers will be drawn at about 9:59 tonight, with the cutoff time for ticket sales at 9 p.m.
