Escambia Schools Closed On Monday, No Decision Yet On Tuesday

All Escambia County (FL) Schools will be closed on Monday under an order from Gov. Rick School closing all schools statewide.
“I will make an announcement Monday providing information about returning to school,” Superintendent Malcolm Thomas, who cautioned residents about fake news and rumors on social media and other sources.
“There are a number of ‘fake news’ reports being circulated about Escambia Schools. Currently, no schools are being utilized as shelters,” he said.
“Beware of posts that do not originate from official sources.”

Escambia Academy (AL) will be closed on Monday.
Pensacola Christian Academy plans to be open for regular classes and events on Monday. Pensacola Christian College also will be open for regular classes and events on Monday.

Football: Who Plays, Who Stays At Home Due To Hurricane Irma

Gov. Rick Scott’s order closing all public schools in Florida Friday through Monday has changed the Friday night football schedule for some teams.
Escambia County School Superintendent Malcolm Thomas said extracurricular activities would go one in Escambia County, while Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties decided to cancel all activities, including football.
That means Gulf Breeze at Tate and Pace at Pine Forest are canceled.
Northview is on the road against South Walton, and as of Thursday night Coach Derek Marshman had confirmed the game is still on in Santa Rosa Beach.

Arthur Brown Road Closed Friday At The Railroad Crossing

Arthur Brown Road in Walnut Hill will be closed to all traffic at the railroad crossing beginning at 7 a.m. Friday.
The roadway closure is expected to remain in effect from approximately 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Officialssaid every effort will be made to expedite construction efforts to reopen the road before 5 p.m.
The crossing is being closed by Alabama & Gulf Coast Railway for maintenance.

Weather
According to the National Hurricane Center, Irma continues to be a potentially catastrophic Category 5 hurricane. The threat of direct hurricane impacts in Florida over the weekend and early next week has increased. While the storm is tracking more favorably away from our area, it is important to understand that the projected storm track is still subject to change.
It is vital that our residents take a moment several times a day to monitor the latest information available. IF the storm does track more in our direction, any impacts would most likely be felt sometime the week of Sept. 10.
Host Shelters
- The Escambia County Equestrian Center is being open as a host shelter for evacuees’ horses. Stalls and RV sites are available at a nominal cost on a first come, first serve basis. - Escambia County and the American Red Cross are on standby to open a host shelter for evacuees from other parts of the state as requested by the Florida Department of Emergency Management.
Volunteering
Volunteer Florida is coordinating with volunteer organizations across the state and has partnered with the American Red Cross to provide shelter operations training to volunteers and AmeriCorps grantees. Floridians who would like to volunteer can register at http://redcross.org/volunteer

- Veterans from storm-impacted areas who require immediate assistance may contact the VA Health Resource Center Disaster Hotline at 1-800-507-4571
- The Florida Department of Transportation is suspending construction work and lane closures throughout the state in preparation for evacuation routes.
- The toll at the Bob Sikes Toll Plaza onto Pensacola Beach remains lifted, as do tolls around the state.

- Prep your yard - As we are entering the height of hurricane season, it is also recommended that residents take a few minutes to inspect their home and yard. Check for, fix or remove loose items on your home and sheds. Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and down spouts. Trim trees and shrubs around your home.
