High heat and humidity cause the body to work extra hard to maintain a normal temperature. Stay indoors with air conditioning if at all possible over the next few days. Check on your neighbors and friends and family frequently if they do not have air conditioning. Outdoor plans this weekend? Make sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, take breaks in the shade, and apply sunscreen regularly.

Heat Advisory Issued; Heat Index 107-115
August 9, 2019

A heat advisory has been issued through 7 p.m. Monday with the daytime heat index expected to be 107 t0 112 with some areas reaching 115.
The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible. Heat exhaustion may set in if individuals are not adequately cooled or hydrated. Morning lows remaining above
78 degrees will add to the overall heat stress with little to no relief.
Residents should check on elderly friends and neighbors, and those without air conditioning.
Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

Two Charged With Murder In Atmore Party Shooting That Claimed One Life, Injured Eight
August 5, 2019
Two Atmore men have been charged with murder in connection with a shooting incident that left one man dead and eight others injured at a party.
Michael Lashan Weaver Jr., 21, and Michael Bernard Pettway, 22, have each been charged with one count of murder for the death of Chirshawn Jermaine Westry.
About 2 a.m. on May 18, Atmore Police responded to a shots fired report in the 100 block of Martin Luther King Drive in Atmore. “The location was formally the Escambia County Middle School but had recently served as a community center for after school students,” according to Atmore Police Chief Chuck Brooks in a written statement.
Brooks said police arrived to hear gunshots around the property as they worked to assist the victims and restore order. Westry was found deceased in the building’s cafeteria.
The arrests have not closed the case as Atmore Police are continuing to investigate the eight injuries.
“They (Weaver and Pettway) are the only two charged right now. But we are continuing to investigate the other shootings in the case,” Brooks said.
Weaver and Pettway were being held in the Escambia County (AL) Detention Center in Brewton.
Weaver’s mugshot was not immediately available.
Driver’s License Service, Vehicle Registration Event In Century On Tuesday
August 5, 2019
Mobile driver’s license and vehicle registration services will return to Century Tuesday, August 6 for a single day event.
Escambia County Tax Collector Scott Lunsford has partnered with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to bring the Florida Licensing On Wheels (FLOW) mobile office to Century from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Billy G. Ward Century Courthouse at 7500 North Century Boulevard.
FLOW is a stand-alone mobile office with technology to provide most motorists’ needs. The mobile unit provides a convenient method to renew a driver’s license, obtain a replacement driver’s license, conversion/reciprocation of out-of-state license, change a name or address on a current driver’s license or identification card, and get a first-time identification card. In addition to licensing services, the mobile unit also provides an opportunity to renew or replace a vehicle registration and apply, renew or replace disabled parking placards. Written and driving tests are not available from the FLOW unit.
Citizens can renew vehicle registrations up to three months and driver’s licenses up to 18 months in advance of expiration.
Citizens using the FLOW services are encouraged to visit EscambiaTaxCollector.com and click the “What Do I Bring” button for information on what is needed for these services. Staff from the tax collector’s office will be on hand to answer all FLOW service questions and questions concerning all other tax collector services such as property tax, business tax receipts, concealed weapons licensing, etc. Citizens also can drop off property tax payments (checks only).
