Miss Carver Century Pageant Tonight

Miss Carver Century will be named tonight at Carver Century School. The pageant begins at 6:00 in the school cafeteria. Girls from the second to eighth grades will be in tonight’s pageant.

The money raised will be put toward field trip to the Alabama Shakespeare Festival in Montgomery on April 24. The fifth through eight grades will be attending a performance of the “Count of Monte Cristo”.

Romney To Campaign In Escambia Friday Afternoon

Florida’s GOP front runner, Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, will make a brief campaign stop in Pensacola Friday afternoon.

Romney will appear at Avalex Technologies at 115 A Gregory Square in downtown Pensacola at 12:30 according to his campaign website. Avalex is a company that specializes in creating aviation navigation systems.

In the latest polls released Thursday, Romney held a slight 30 to 26 percent lead over Arizona Senator John McCain for Florida’s Republican vote.

Slightly Warmer Weather, But Rain Returns For Tonight, Wednesday

Dozens of campers braved cold nights over the weekend at Lake Stone near Century. The weather will be warmer tonight, but rain is back in the forecast. There’s a 30 percent chance of rain in the evening, with a low around 45. Widespread dense fog is expected by morning.

Rain chances will be at 50 percent on Wednesday with a high around 60. It will be cooler Wednesday night with a low around 40 with a 60 percent chance of rain. Rain chances continue at 40 percent on Thursday with a high of 52. Much colder temps return for Thursday night with a low around 25.

Century Council Meeting Moved To Tuesday Night Due To Holiday

The regular third Monday night meeting of the Century Town Council has been rescheduled for Tuesday night due to the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.

The Century Town Council will meet at 6:00 at in the town council chambers at town hall. This will be the second meeting of the year for Freddie McCall, Sr., the town’s new mayor.

Presidential Hopeful McCain To Visit Escambia County Tuesday

mccain.jpgRepublican presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain will visit Escambia County on Tuesday. McCain will hold a military veteran’s rally on the main campus of Pensacola Junior College. Doors will open at 8:00 with McCain scheduled to speak at about 9:00.

McCain came out on top in this past Saturday’s highly contest South Carolina primary.

MLK Events Planned For Today In Century And Atmore

A Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration will be held Monday in Century. The Century-Flomaton Association will hold a parade and other activities.

The parade will line up at the old high school on Pond Street at 8:30 and roll at about 9:00. It will end at the Ag Building on Highway 4 at 10:00 with an indoor program.

The Concerned Citizens of Atmore will hold their annual MLK Parade/March Monday. The parade will line-up at 9:00 at Houston Avery Park; the parade will begin at 10:00. A program will be held following the parade at Deliverance Minsitry of Jesus Christ on 2nd Avenue.

Weather Update: Freeze Warning In Effect For North Escambia

A Hard Freeze Warning is again in effect from 10:00 Sunday night until 8:00 Monday morning for the North Escambia area. Overnight lows are expected to be around 20 with a five to 10 mph north wind.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day will be sunny with a high around 55. Rain returns to the forecast on Tuesday.

The area was actually placed under a Winter Weather Advisory on Saturday with a slight chance of snow accumulation, but that never happened. After Saturday’s rain and overnight lows around 23, there was a risk of ice on area bridges. As a precaution, the Escambia County Road Department sanded many bridges on county roads in the area.

Ray’s Chapel To Hold Special Service Tonight

The evening service at Ray’s Chapel Baptist Church will feature the singing family “Simple Grace” beginning at 5:30. A covered dish fellowship time will follow the evening service.

Dr. Bob Greene, Director of Missions for the Pensacola Bay Baptist Association, was the guest speaker during the morning service.

Ray’s Chapel will honor retiring pastor F.L. Enfinger and his wife Mary on Saturday, February 2 from 2:00 until 5:00 in the church’s fellowship hall. Enfinger is retiring after 38 years in the ministry.

The church is located at 170 West Bogia Road in Bogia, about one half mile off Highway 29.

Gulf Winds Credit Union Shutdown This Weekend, No ATMs

gulfwindsatmore11.jpgGulf Winds Federal Credit Union is shutdown this three day holiday weekend for computer upgrades. All services, including Gulf Winds ATMs are unavailable.

Lobby and drive-thru service were closed at all locations on Saturday, and the bank will be closed on Monday for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Online banking, Gulf Winds ATMs, Phone Anytime Teller, and the call center will all be unavailable.

“The system maintenance will improve service and security to our branches, and the system move is an important part of our disaster and recovery planning,” according to a Gulf Winds press release.

Gulf Winds credit cards and VISA debit cards will continue to work during the weekend for purchases and at the ATMs of other banks. Gulf Winds states that they will reimburse customers all fees related to using local ATMs , except at those owned by Penair Federal Credit Union.

Walnut Hill Baptist To Begin Bible Study

Walnut Hill Baptist Church will begin a January Bible study entitled “God’s Amazing Grace” Sunday night at 6:00. The study will continue each Sunday evening at 6:00 and Wednesday evenings at 7:00.

On January 29, a ladies Beth Moore study “The Patriarchs” will begin each Tuesday evening at 6:00.
