Cold Front Brings Cooler Temps
May 11, 2008
A cold front that passed through the North Escambia area over the weekend will bring cooler temperatures and lower humidity for the next few days.
A Fire Weather Warning has been issued for the area from 11:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Monday and from noon until 5:00 p.m. Tuesday. Afternoon relative humidities will drop below critical levels before rising around sunset each day. A Red Flag Warning, or a Fire Weather Warning, means that that critical fire weather conditions are expected to occur. A combination of low relative humidity and warm temperatures will create rapid fire growth potential.
After a start in the 50’s today’s high is expected to reach 82 under sunny skies. Tonight will be clear and chilly, with an overnight low around 47. Tuesday will once again be sunny, with a high of 85.

Atmore Mayfest Cancelled
May 3, 2008
The annual Mayfest in Atmore was washed out Saturday morning.
At 10:30 a.m., Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce officers decided to cancel Mayfest today.
Atmore Chamber president Allen Walston said that even when the rain subsides, the park is too wet from this morning’s line of storms to go on with the festival. Also, the rain and standing water were affecting the venues that required electricity.
The entire Mayfest will not be rescheduled, however, the Beautiful Baby Contest will be. Allen said that since next weekend is Mother’s Day, it probably will be rescheduled for a couple of weeks from this weekend.

Thursday afternoon, withering flowers marked the spot by Highway 4 in Century where three people died last Friday night. More flowers were nearby, and a paramedic’s glove was on the ground a short distance away.
One survivor remains in Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, and a makeshift memorial has been erected at the site of the crash.
Jacob Castleberry, 17, of Jay was still listed in critical condition at Sacred Heart Thursday night. Three other people in the car Castleberry was riding in died as a result of the crash at Jefferson Avenue and Highway 4 at about 10:30 last Friday night.
Michael Joe Edwards, 17, of Brewton was driving north on Jefferson Avenue when he failed to stop at a stop sign (pictured above), driving across Highway 4 into the eastbound path of a 2008 Ford truck driven by William H. Arnett, 43, of Holt. Arnett’s truck struck the left side of Edward’s truck, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The FHP says Edwards was pronounced dead at the scene. Edward’s passenger Daniel A. Smith, 16, of Jay was also pronounced dead at the scene. A second passenger, Jessica L. Smith, 20, of Jay was later pronounced dead at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. The third passenger in the vehicle, Jacob Castleberry, 17, of Jay was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital where he was listed in critical condition. The Smiths were brother and sister.
Arnett was not injured, according to the FHP. His passenger, Glinda M. Arnett, 30, of Baker was transported to Sacred Heart in critical condition. She was released from the hospital last Sunday night.
