Store That Was Scene Of Murder-Suicide To Reopen Today
October 6, 2008

An Atmore store that was the scene of murder-suicide on September 26 will reopen for business on Monday.
Broken windows have been repaired, and the front of the store has been cleaned in preparation for the opening at 9:00 this morning.
Atmore Police said Justin Tyshawn Clark, 22, entered Hudson’s Dirt Cheap just before 11:00 on September 26 to speak to his girlfriend and mother of his two children, Raphia Shardae Arnold, 21. A Dirt Cheap manager asked him to leave because she was working, police say. He exited the store and returned seconds later and requested that another cashier give him change for a $100 bill so he could give Arnold money to buy clothes for the children.
At that point, Clark then fired one shot, hitting Arnold in the head. He then shot himself in the head.
An Atmore police officer, Sgt. Darrell Holsonback, was outside the store as the shootings occurred. He had stopped near Arnold’s vehicle outside the store because it was parked in a fire lane. While he was exiting his patrol car, he heard gunshots inside the store.
Inside the store, he found Arnold lying on the floor near the front door with a gunshot wound to the head. Clark was found about 15 feet away between two checkout counters at front of the store with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

County Meeting Tonight To Discuss Fire Unification Plan
September 22, 2008
Escambia County will hold a special meeting with fire-rescue staff and the volunteer fire chiefs to finalize the county’s fire department unification plan.
The Escambia County Commission was set to approve the unification plan at their meeting last Thursday, but they decided to delay the vote for at least a week.
Fire Chief Kenny Perkins says the extra week will give him the time needed to line up the support of all 15 volunteer chiefs and iron out differences over what to do about volunteer officers that do not meet minimum standards for their positions under the plan.
The meeting with the firemen and their chiefs will be held at the Bureau of Public Safety, 6575 North “W” Street tonight at 6:30.
The commission has scheduled a special meeting for Thursday to adopt the fire unification plan.

FHP Roadside Sobriety Checkpoint Tonight
September 19, 2008
The Florida Highway Patrol will be holding a roadside “Sobriety Safety Checkpoint” between 11:00 tonight and 3:00 Saturday morning on Nine Mile Road in Pensacola.
There will be approximately 25 uniformed officers participating, as well as support personnel from the Emerald Coast MADD Chapter. Other participating agencies include the Escambia County Sheriffs Office, Pensacola Police Department, University of West Florida Police Department, Gulf Breeze Police Department, Milton Police Department, and the Santa Rosa County Sheriffs Office.
During the operation, vehicles will be stopped to check for driver impairment. Should impairment be detected, roadside sobriety testing will be performed on site. Warning devices will be
placed in strategic locations for the safety and protection of the public.
Reducing the deaths and injuries associated with impaired drivers is of the utmost importance to the Florida Highway Patrol. The checkpoints have been very successful in removing impaired drivers from our public streets and highways.
The FHP says available traffic crash and DUI arrests statistics clearly reveal the need for enforcement of alcohol related laws in this area of Escambia County. Through the use of Roadside Sobriety Safety Checkpoints, troopers hope to merge public education and enforcement to achieve a reduction in the deaths and injuries associated with impaired drivers.
Drivers call call *FHP (*347) if they come in contact with what they believe is an impaired driver to reach the highway patrol.
