Turtle Point Presents Library Program

The Turtle Point Science Center from Flomaton will present a special program today in Century.
Turtle Point’s program will take place at the Century Branch Library at 4 this afternoon. Children of all ages are invited to attend the informative free program.

Today’s Northview School Advisory Council Meeting Canceled

The Northview High School School Advisory Council meeting scheduled for this afternoon has been canceled.
The next meeting of the Northview SAC will be April 20 at 3 p.m. in the media center.
School advisory council meetings are open to the public.
Carver/Century Closure Expected To Become Final Tonight

The Escambia County School Board holds the keys to Carver/Century K-8 School in their hands, and tonight they are expected to vote lock the doors at the end of this school year.
The board is expected to vote tonight to rezone Carver/Century K-8 School students to Bratt Elementary and Ernest Ward Middle School.
“The effect of these changes is to close Carver/Century K8,” the board’s detailed agenda for tonight says.

Join Relay For Life; Team Captain Meeting Tonight

A Century Relay for Life team captain’s meeting will be held this evening, and event organizers want you to know there is still time to form a team.
Teams are needed now, not just from Century, but from areas like Walnut Hill, Bratt, Molino, McDavid and Flomaton.
The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life raises fund for out community that go towards research, prevention, treatment, education, advocacy and patient services.
“This is a way to CELEBRATE those who have fought cancer and won. This is a way to REMEMBER those who have fought cancer and lost. This is a way to FIGHT BACK against a disease that has touched all of us in one way or another,” a Relay for Life release reads.
You can help with Relay by creating a team to raise funds, buy a track marker with your message, purchase a luminaria in honor or memory of someone, or just come out to the event and have fun.
The team captain’s meeting will be held at 6:30 this evening in the cafeteria at Carver/Century K-8 School.

Rain Ending: Flood Warning For Escambia River; Dense Fog Tonight

(Updated 5:15 p.m.)The weather service says there is slight chance of more rain in North Escambia and surrounding areas this evening. A flood warning for the Escambia River has been issued. And, after the rain clears overnight, there is a dense fog advisory through tomorrow morning.
A flood warning has been issued for the Escambia River near Century. Earlier today, the flood state was at 10.4 feet. Flood state is 17 feet. The river is forecast to rise above flood stage by Thursday morning and continue to rise to near 17.4 feet by Friday morning, with a further rise possible by the weekend. At 17.5 feet some flooding of lowlands in the area will continue until the river level drops below 13 feet.
The rain will end tonight, with just a 30 percent chance of an overnight shower. There is dense fog advisory in effect from 10 tonight to 10 tomorrow morning. A cold front will move across the area. The cooler air, when combined with the moisture on the ground from the rain will produce widespread dense fog. The overnight low will be about 53.Tuesday through Saturday are forecast to be sunny with daytime highs in the mid to upper 70’s and overnight lows in the 40’s.
Hundreds Pray For Schools

Hundreds gathered this afternoon at Jay High School to pray for the schools in our area. Shofar horns were sounded during the service. School Prayer Service Today In Jay; Everyone Invited

A prayer service will held Saturday afternoon at Jay High School. Sponsored by over a dozen churches, the service is a direct response to an ACLU lawsuit and a federal court judge’s order against any prayer or promotion of religion in Santa Rosa County Schools.
At 4 p.m. Saturday at least 14 churches will come together on the baseball field at Jay High School to pray for the students in the Jay area. Herring said the gathering will not be impacted by the judge’s order because the event is not school sponsored, and the churches are paying to rent the facility under district guidelines. The event will take place rain or shine.
“We want to encourage these kids to stand in their faith,” said Pastor Mitch Herring of Poplar Dell Baptist Church, “and let them know that they have people praying for them. We want the Lord to raise up leaders at our schools.”
The event is being called “Sounding the Trumpet”. Shofar horns will be sounded during the service. The horn, made from a ram’s horn, is sometimes used in religious ceremonies, often to signify change.
“We are going to come as Christians, not any denomination, and offer prayer that our students will serve the Lord,” said Pastor Herring. His Poplar Dell church is located in North Escambia, but he is taking part in the service because he lives in Jay.
“We want the children to know we are for them, even though they took Baccalaureate away from them,” the pastor said.
Berrydale Baptist, Brownsdale Baptist, Cobbtown Christian, Cobbtown Holiness, Jay First Baptist, Jay Pentacostal, Jay United Methodist, Mt. Carmel United Methodist, Pine Level Baptist and Poplar Dell Baptist Church are among those participating in the non-denominational prayer service.
U.S. District Court Judge Casey Rodgers issued an injunction banning prayer and religion in Santa Rosa County Schools following an ACLU lawsuit against Santa Rosa County. That injunction prevents the school district from promoting or sponsoring prayers during school-sponsored events, including graduation; planning or financing religious Baccalaureate services; holding school-sponsored events at religious venues when alternative locations are reasonably available; and prohibits school officials from promoting their personal religious beliefs in class or during school-sponsored events and activities.
That order has also prompted many Escambia County high schools, including Northview, to eliminate a school sponsored Baccalaureate this year.

Dense Fog Advisory Extended Until Noon

The National Weather Service in Mobile extended a dense fog advisory until noon. Patchy dense fog remains around the area. Locations to the south are worse that most of North Escambia.
Areas of dense fog over the western Florida Panhandle will continue this morning. Visibilities in several locations will continue at less than one quarter of a mile for several hours.
“The fog is of the advective variety making it rather deep. It will therefore be more resistant to morning solar heating and will linger until around noon or shortly before,” the weather services says.
A dense fog advisory means visibilities will frequently be reduced to less than one quarter mile. If driving, slow down, use your headlights and leave plenty of distance ahead of you.
Thompson Road Brush Fire
March 9, 2009
(Updated 4:50 p.m.) Firefighters from Century and McDavid are battling a brush fire in the 400 block of Thompson Road this afternoon.
The fire was reported about 4 p.m. in a wooded area between Thompson Road and Canoe Creek, near the intersection of Crary Road.
Firefighters declared the fire to be under control at 4:50 this afternoon.
No structures were threatened by the fire.
