Barbara Ann (Bowman) Nowling

Barbara Ann (Bowman) Nowling left her temporary home May 17, 2011, after losing a courageous battle with cancer. Barbara lived in the Pensacola area her entire life and resided in Molino.

She leaves behind her beautiful, loving children, Gary Watson (Ginger), James Manning, Vicky Polk (Tommy); step-children, Jamie Nowling (Sherry), Matt Nowling (Amity) and Tommy Nowling.

Barbara’s legacy will live on through her loving sisters and brothers, Joyce Redd, Sandra Shipps (Ernie), Connie Ferro (Rodney), Charles Bowman, Sr., Eugene Bowman, Sr. (Cheryl), and Ray McDuffie (Mary); numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends whose lives she touched with such charisma, strength and always love.

She will have a joyous homecoming reunion with pre-deceased family members: James Nowling (husband), Jimmy “Buddy” Manning (husband), Curtis Watson (ex-husband), Cheryl (Watson) Ostermeyer (daughter), Ronnie Manning (son), Shepherd Bowman (father), Juanita Lord (mother), Donald Ray “Bo” Bowman (brother), and Jerry Wayne Bowman (brother).

Family and friends can celebrate her journey home at Pensacola Memorial Gardens Funeral Home on Saturday, May 21, 2011. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. until services start at 11:00 a.m.

Interment will be at Pensacola Memorial Gardens.

Opal Lambeth Valenzuela Free

Mrs. Opal Lambeth Valenzuela Free, 55, passed away on Sunday, May 15, 2011, in Davisville.

Mrs. Free was a native of Atmore, a former resident of Bay Minette, and a resident of Davisville for most of her life. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 188 in Century and the Vision Ministry Church of Bay Minette.

Survivors include her husband, Marvin L. Free of Davisville; her son, Chad and Lori Lambeth of Rabon; three daughters, April and Steve Kelley of Perdido, Angel and Denny Carlton of Bay Minette, and Mina Lambeth and Robert Day of Rabon; her mother, Ruth Hadley of Elanor; 11 grandchildren; two brothers, Shannon and Selena Vinson of Elsanor and Daryl and Diane Bryars of Perdido; and a sister, Peggy Sue Naylor of Ft. Myers.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 20, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronald Hall officiating. Burial will follow at White Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Thursday, May 19, 2011, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Denny Carlton, Robert Day, Steve Kelley, Derrick Crocker, Stoney Shiver and Tony Carlton.

Robert “Earl” Gafford

Mr. Robert “Earl” Gafford, Sr., age 58, passed away Monday, May 16, 2011, at a Crestview hospital.

Mr. Gafford was a native of Pensacola and a resident of Holt for the past 11 years, coming from Pensacola. He worked as a surveyor and was of the Baptist faith. He loved to watch his grandchildren play sports, was a loving family man, and an avid LSU fan. Mr. Gafford was preceded in death by his father, Mr. Otto Stokes, Jr.

He is survived by his mother, Barbara Stokes of Century; his wife, Teresa Broxson of Holt; two sons, Robert Earl Gafford, Jr. of Holt, Jamie Gafford of Century; daughter, Charity Gafford of Milton; stepsons, Joshua and Joseph Johnson of Holt; stepdaughters, Sara Booker of Baker, Amanda Mackey of Pensacola; brothers, John William Gafford of Century, and Otto Stokes III of Century; sisters, Ruby Patricia Tolbert of Brewton, and Barbara Ann Flowers of Pensacola; and 16 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 19, 2011 at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Flomaton Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Barrow officiating. Interment will follow in Bay Minette Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at Flomaton Funeral Home on Wednesday from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.

Katherine R. Cooper

Mrs. Katherine R. Cooper, 91, passed away on Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at a local hospital.

Mrs. Cooper was a native of Talasheek, LA, a resident of Atmore,  for the past 41 years, a retired co-manager of the Super 5 & 10, and attended the Baptist church. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She lived here as a child and was a 5th and 6th Grader at Rachel Patterson School.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John E. and Olive Ritchey, Sr., and four siblings, Herbert Doyle Ritchey, Thelma Ritchey Nall, Margaret Ritchey Pattillo, and John E. Ritchey, Jr.

She is survived by her Husband of 70 years, Benjamin Yancy Cooper, Jr. of Atmore; two sons, Benjamin Yancy and Kay Cooper II of Falls Church, VA, and Kenneth Milton and Dawn Cooper of Atmore; her daughter, Kay Cooper Porter of St. Louis, MO; five grandchildren, Claire and Peter Newton, Colin Porter, Alex and Maggie Cooper, Benjamin Yancy Cooper IV and Courtney Cooper; and a great-grandchild, Cooper Newton.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 19, 2011, at 4:00 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Keese officiating Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Thursday, May 19, 2011 from 2:00 p.m. until funeral time at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Gladys M. Middleton

Gladys M. Middleton, 89 of Atmore, died Saturday May 14, 2011,  in Atmore. She was born on July 05, 1921, in Milton to the late Nealy Jefferson and Nettie Sanders Martin.

Earlier in her adult life, Gladys was an auto parts salesperson at her family’s business, Martin Automotive Supply in Atmore, and later with Haskew owned and operated Middleton’s Grocery in Atmore.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Will Middleton.

She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Haskew Middleton of Atmore; one son, Bob Middleton of Orange Beach; one daughter, Pam Middleton of Irvington, NY; one sister, Edna Barrentine of Spanish Fort; two grandchildren, Adam Middleton of Atlanta  and Jill Middleton of Daphne; and one great-grandchild, Will Middleton.

Services were held Tuesday May 17, 2011, from Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Arnold Hendrix officiating, Interment followed in Oak Hill Cemetery. Active Pallbearers were Floyd Adams, Adam Middleton, Steve Jernigan, James Norris, Fritz Curry and Lowell McGill.

Family received friends Monday evening May 16, 2011, at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home.

Charles Van Kilgore

Mr. Charles Van Kilgore, age 70, passed away Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at his Flomaton residence.

Graveside funeral services for Mr. Kilgore will be held on Friday, May 20, 2011, at 10 a.m. at Green Acres Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held at Craver’s Funeral Home on Thursday from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.

Carla Gohagin Wasdin

Ms. Carla Gohagin Wasdin, 46, passed away on Sunday, May 15, 2011 in Atmore.

Ms. Wasdin was a native of Fort Seal, OK, and a resident of Atmore for most of her life. She was an employee of Wind Creek Casino, a loving mother and grandmother, loved gardening and flowers and attended the baptist church.

She is survived by her fiance’, Jim Lovell of Atmore; her daughter, Mallory Wasdin and Randall Rolin of Huxford; two grandchildren, Brodie Rolin and Autumn Rolin; father, Carlos and Faye Gohagin of Huxford; mother, Jeanette and Kenneth Baggett of Walnut Hill; three stepbrothers, Michael Baggett of Robertsdale,  Tim Baggett of Summerdale,  and Kenny Baggett of Tampa; a sister, Neely and Gary Baggett of Walnut Hill; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 19, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home in Atmore with Bro. Mark Peacock officiating.

Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 18, 2011, from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m.  at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Shirley F. Martin

Mr. Shirley F. Martin, 81, passed away on Sunday, May 15, 2011, at a Mobile hospital.

Mr. Martin was a native of Troy, Ala., a former resident of Atmore and a resident of Stockton, Ala. for the past two years. He was a U.S. Army veteran, owned and operated the Martin Timber Company and attended the Methodist church.

He was Preceded in death by his wife, Betty Gibbs Martin.

Survivors include his son, Dan Steven and Pamela Martin of Gulf Shores; his daughter, Mitzi and Allen Thomas of Atmore; one grandchild, Kimberly Walker; two great-grandchildren, Alyssa Walker and Austin Walker; two brothers, Carol Martin of Atmore, and Douglas Martin of Bratt; and two sisters, Lillie Goleman of Bell Fountain, Ala., and Shelby Hatcher of Atmore.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at the Serenity Garden Cemetery with the Rev. Homer Stewart officiating and Petty Funeral Homes, LLC directing.

Visitation will be held Monday, May 16, 2011, from 6-9 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Ronnie Martin, Harold Martin, Bobby Martin, Greg Martin, Benjamin Martin and Michael Chavers.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the VFW.

Thomas James Gunn

Thomas James Gunn, of Molino, a wonderful father, grandfather, brother, husband, and son, went to be with the Lord on Saturday morning, May 14, 2011, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 56 years old.

Originally from Clarksville, IN, he resided in Molino after 20 years in the U.S. Navy. Tommy spent his last few weeks at his home surrounded by friends and family. He was a very loving, hardworking, devoted, caring man who was very special to all of us. His kindness and giving heart will forever be in our hearts and memories.

Survivors include his loving wife of 29 years, Linda; his mother, Carolyn Gunn; his sister, Judy Blalock (Gerald); his brother, Jerry Gunn, all of Clarksville, IN; three daughters, Tawnya Hysinger (Lyle) of Simpsonville, KY; Tamara Dunn (Joel) of Molino, and Krissey Hilliard (Johnathon) of Pensacola; son, Thomas James Gunn II of Molino; six grandchildren, Blake & Summer Dunn, Brennan & Kaelynn Hilliard, Will Hysinger, and Jordan Larson. Thomas had many nieces and nephews who all loved and enjoyed his company.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at Faith Chapel North Funeral Home, 1000 Hwy 29 Cantonment, with Rev. Donald Huntsman officiating.

Interment with military honors will follow in Barrancas National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Faith Chapel North from 5 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 17.

Audrey Kate Kizer

Audrey Kate Kizer, 89 of Atmore, died Saturday May 14, 2011, at her son’s residence. She was retired from Vainty Fair Mills as a seamstress She was born on September 28, 1921 in Atmore to the late John and Lula Ward Owens. She was an active member of Brooks Memorial Baptist Church, and will long be remembered as one that played the harmonica.

She was preceded in death by her husband Joe Pete Kizer, Son, Andy Kizer, and a daughter, Louise Arguliz.

She is survived by one son, Foster Kizer of Atmore; two daughters, Carolyn Everette of Atmore, Frances Hartzog of Prattville; a special sister-in-law, Marie Owens of Atmore; 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be Monday May 16, 2011, at 11 a.m. from Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dianne Everette officiating. Interment will follow in Canoe Freewill Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Scott Everette, Richard Everette, Delane Hartzog, Adam Hartzog, Michael Gunn and Rodney Owens.

Family will receive friends, Monday May 16, 2011, at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home from 10 a.m. until service time.
