William Edward “Bill” Smith

William Edward “Bill” Smith, 68 of Atmore died Sunday March 27, 2011, at his residence. He was Emergency Management Association director of Escambia
County for many years and a long time chief of police of Atmore.
Smith was born in Mobile on November 19, 1942. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward L. Smith, Nell W. Stacey and Otis R. “PeeWee” Stacey.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Roberts Smith of Atmore, two daughters, Geni Diane Clayton and husband Andy of Milton and Carol Stacey Davis of Atmore. Late in life Bill was fortunate enough to add a son to his family, Justin Gates of Fairhope. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Sarah Davis Clayton, Katelyn Nell Clayton, Ian Andrew Clayton all of Milton, and Skylar Allison Davis of Atmore.
Services will be Wednesday March 30, 2011, At 10 a.m. from Atmore Memorial Chapel with Bro. Robert Thower officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Justin Gates, Robert Carlee, Kenny Rolin, Charles Rabon, Ed Rabon, and Doug Welch.
Family will receive friends Tuesday evening March 29, 2011, at Atmore Memorial Chapel from 6-8 p.m.
Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home in Atmore is in charge of all arrangements.
Monroe James Wiggins

Monroe James Wiggins, 84, of Molino passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2011.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Wiggins; daughter, Barbara Johnson; sons, Harold Wiggins and Michael Wiggins.
His survivors include his daughter, Linda Wiggins; sons, Monroe James Wiggins, Jr. (Sandra), Willie Wiggins and Freddie Wiggins; daughter-inlaw, Gloria Wiggins; siblings, Nettie Cox, Blanche Weatherspoon, John Wiggins, Joseph Wiggins and William Wiggins.
Funeral Services will be Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Reeds Funeral Home in Pensacola. Viewing will be Tuesday, March 29, 2011, from noon to 7 p.m. at Reeds Funeral Home.
Annie Mae Spence Cook

Mrs. Annie Mae Spence Cook, 68, passed away on Friday, March 25, 2011, in Atmore, AL.
Mrs. Cook was a native of Nokomis, FL, a lifelong resident of Atmore, AL and attended the Fretwell Tabernacle Holiness Church.
Survivors include her son, Alfred Joe and Mary Dean Hodges of Atmore; her daughter, Ida Christine Brown of Atmore; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three brothers, John W. Spence, J.D. “Dink” Spence and Alton Spence, all of Walnut Hill; and two sisters, Marie Locke of Corning, AR, and Doris Payne of Stapleton, AL.
Funeral services will be held Monday, March 28, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Sister Helen Stewart officiating.
Burial will follow at Antioch Cemetery
Visitation was held Sunday, March 27, 2011, at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Thomas Craig Garrett

Mr. Thomas Craig Garrett, 50, passed away on Thursday, March 24, 2011, in Mobile.
Mr. Garrett was a native and lifelong resident of Bluff Springs and attended the Baptist church. He will be loved and missed by many. He was preceded in death by his parents Clarence and Edna Garrett.
He is survived by eight brothers and sisters, Joe and Monika Garrett of Bluff Springs,, Susan and Milt Lowrey of Jay, Earl and Karen Garrett of Flomaton, Merle and D.C. Odom of Century, Stephen “Cotton” Garrett of Flomaton, Sherry and Rickie Holley of Petry, AL, Jabo and Teresa Garrett of Flomaton, and Lisa and Leavon Sessions of Mobile; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 27, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Sam Weaver officiating.
Burial will follow at Crary Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Saturday, March 26, 2011 6-9 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Lewis T. “Pete” Morgan

Lewis T. “Pete” Morgan, 80, of Cantonment, passed away Monday, March 21, 2011 after a brief illness.
Pete was born on October 15, 1930 in Atmore, AL graduated from Pensacola High School in 1950. He entered the United States Navy and proudly served on the USS Saint Paul. He developed a love for law enforcement early in life and after his enlistment in 1956, he embarked on a 33 year career with the Escambia County Sheriff’s Department where he was assigned to investigate traffic accidents. After ten years with the Department, he was given the assignment of training school youngster on the Junior Deputy Patrol Units. In 1961, Pete was re-assigned to the Sheriff’s Investigation Division where later he was put in charge of the Department’s crimes against property unit where he remained until his retirement in 1989.
In 1977, Pete entered the Free Masons and was a member of Lodge 42, 32nd Mason. He joined the Hadji Shrine and served on the Oriental Band Unit serving as President several times.
Traveling with friends in his motor home was an enjoyment as well as attending baseball, soccer and basketball games with his grandchildren. Pete will be remembered as a dedicated law enforcement officer, husband, father, grandfather and friend to many.
Preceded in death are Pete’s parents, Lloyd Thomas and Elvie Ward Morgan and a son, Lewis Thomas “Tommy” Morgan, Jr.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 51 years, Frances; two sons, Adam Scott and wife Chyloe and Craig Allen and his wife Trish; three beloved grandchildren, Adam, Ciara and Kyle; sister, Winnie Kramer and her husband, Johnny, Mobile, AL and several nieces.
A visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 24, 2011 at Hillcrest Baptist Church, 800 East Nine Mile Road, Pensacola. Funeral services, Pastor David Wiggins officiating, will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Pensacola Memorial Gardens Funeral Home directing.
Interment, with full honors rendered by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Department Honor Guard Unit and Masonic Rites, will be at Pensacola Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hadji Temple Transportation Fund in memory of Pete Morgan.
John B. Gilman

Mr. John B. Gilman, 100, passed away on Friday, March 18, 2011, at a Santa Rosa County hospital.
He was born in 1910 to John B. and Sally Butts Gilman. He was a resident of Canoe, AL, and Bratt and was a longtime member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Bratt. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Myra Conway Gilman.
Survivors include: his nine children, Mary Alice and Pete Peterson, Geraldine Godwin, Willie Jean and A.J. Edwards, Betty and Fred Moore, all of Bratt and Helen and Glenn Wolfe, of Bay Minette, Patricia and Rick Gregory, James Edward and Sherrye Gilman, Robert and Gloria Gilman, all of Bratt and Luther and Janice Gilman, of Pasadena, TX; 22 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; 35 great-great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Hazel McIntyre of Atmore, AL.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Bratt with the Rev. Gary Wieborg officiating.
Burial will follow at Godwin Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Monday, March 21, 2011, from 6-9 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home in Atmore.

Henry Clay Morris

Mr. Henry Clay Morris, 66, passed away on Friday, March 18, 2011 in Clayton, AL.
Mr. Morris was a native of Jay, a former resident of Flomaton, and a resident of Clayton, since 1995. He was a carpenter by trade and attended the Assembly of God Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luey Morris and Leona Boutwell, a brother, James Morris and a stepson, John Merritt.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Morris of Clayton; three stepsons, Lee Merritt of Pollard, James and Amanda Merritt of Blue Springs, AL, and Robert Merritt of Ozark, AL; his daughter, Kelly Burkett of Pensacola; his stepdaughter, Christine and John Curtis of Flomaton; seven grandchildren, Lloyd Curtis, Shana Merritt Lambeth, Travis Merritt, Jacob Merritt, Josh Merritt, Allisia Merritt, and Zach Merritt; three great-grandchildren, Timothy Lee Boggs, Johnathan Taylor Curtis, and Anna Grace Merritt; two brothers, J.W. Morris and Levone Morris, both of Century; and a sister, Darlene Morris of Jay.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 21, 2011 at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Sister Mattie Mock and Sister Fannie Wright officiating.
Burial followed at Flomaton Cemetery.

Gabriel “Gabe” Kent Carter

Gabriel “Gabe” Kent Carter, 15, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2011. He was born on April 13, 1995, in Pensacola. Gabe was a freshman at Tate High School. His life ambition was to become a computer programmer and design video games. Gabe was a weightlifter preparing to play football next fall at Tate High School.
He was a parishioner and former alter boy at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church in Cantonment. Gabriel was very caring and generous with his time and was loved by all who knew him. He spent a lot of time doing volunteer work at his church, and was very family centered. He and his brother Eryn were very close and inseparable.
Survivors include his parents; Charles and Carrie Carter, his brother; Eryn Carter, grandparents; Suzanne Carter, Brenda and Sherman Powell, his uncles; Wallace Arthur Carter, Jr. and Anna Mae Maano, Joshua and Jenna Powell, Monique “ Auntie Mimi” Huthinson, Alan and Vicki LaBerge, Gerard and Pamela LaBerge and numerous cousins.
A mass of celebration will be held at noon on Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at St. Judes Thaddeus Catholic Church with Father George officiating.
Serving, as pallbearers will be Eryn Carter, Wallace Carter, Jr., Rodney Raani, Eric Schoppman, James Kelley and Josh Powell.
Interment will follow at Pensacola Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, March 21, 2011, from 5 until 8 p.m. The rosary will be held at 5 p.m.

Charles Arnold, Sr., 83 ,of Cantonment passed away Saturday, March 19, 2011.
Charlie was a member of Gonzalez Baptist Church. He was also a Master Mason and belonged to the Hadji Shrine. He was a lifetime resident of the Pensacola area and was a man who lived life to the fullest and loved God and family.
Survivors include his son, Chuck Arnold and wife Hilda; daughter, Sherry Key and husband Troy; grandchildren, Scotty & Jill Arnold, Walker & Emil Arnold, Hope & Dave Bonucchi, Samantha Key, Greg Key, and Guy Finney; several great grandchildren; one great, great grandchild; brothers, M.J., Billy and Jimmy Arnold; sisters, Helen White, Mary Davis, and Sharon Steelreath; sister-in-law, Joan Arnold.
Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at Gonzalez Baptist Church with Rev. Roy Chewning officiating.

Mrs. Julia Jeanette Comalander, 47, of Cary Street in Flomaton, passed away Thursday evening March 17, 2011, at her residence after an extended illness. Mrs. Comalander was a native of Rome, Georgia, and had lived in Flomaton for more than 30 years. During her working years, she worked as a clerk at the Minute Stop and she was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her father, Arthur Milam and a brother, Walter Daniel “Buck” Milam.
She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Vera & Adolph Riendeau of Robertsdale, Alabama; husband, Joseph H Blackburn of Flomaton; stepson, Joseph R. (Amanda) Blackburn of Flomaton; stepdaughter, Velina (Blake) Calloway of Byrneville, Florida; three brothers, Billy Milam, Ronnie Milam, and James Milam all of Summerville, Georgia; two sisters Diane (Jim) Badgero of Rome, Georgia; Freda Laycock of New Smyrna Beach, Florida; and four grandchildren, Nathan, Savannah, Luke and Sarah.
Visitation will be held Sunday March 20, 2011, from 2 p.m. until the 3 p.m. service time at Flomaton Funeral Home Inc,.
