Mary Jo Petty Chirico

Ms. Mary Jo Petty Chirico, 73, passed away on Monday, August 29, 2011 in Pensacola.
Ms. Chirico was a native and former resident of Pensacola, a former resident of New Jersey and a resident of McDavid since 1990. She was a majorette at, and 1956 graduate of, Pensacola High School. She was a member of the Daughters of the Revolution, the Creek Indian Council of Florida, a chairperson of the Native American Council and a member of the Ray’s Chapel Baptist Church.
She is survived by her son, Joseph G. and Carol Chirico of Boston, MA; her Daughter, Mary O. Chirico of NY; three grandchildren, Matthew Chirico, Michael Chirico and Jennifer Chirico; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins in the Petty, McCall and Brewton families.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 2, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Ray’s Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Pat McCall and the Rev. Nathaniel Brown officiating.
Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Atmore with Petty Funeral Homes directing.
Visitation will be held Thursday, September 1, 2011, from 6-9 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.
Norma Gruber

Norma Gruber of Barrineau Park passed away peacefully Friday, August 26, 2011.
She was from Ellenton Ga., but had lived many years in Barrineau Park. Norma ran a ceramic shop from her home for many years that she eventually converted to mostly making dolls. She took great joy in making people happy with her creations. She was a long time member of Highland Baptist Church in Molino.
She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 59 years, John Gruber. She leaves many precious memories behind for family, friends and former customers.
She is survived by one daughter, Geraldine Jordan and husband Calvin; two granddaughters, Sharon Payne and Tammy Crutchfield; one grandson, Phillip Jordan; five great grandsons; two great granddaughters; and one great-great grandson. She is also survived by two sisters, Madie Hopson and Myrtice Bunn; two brothers, Ray Castleberry and Howard Castleberry; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 30, at Highland Baptist Church in Molino, with services at noon. Eastern Gate Memorial Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.
Francis McCarthy

Francis McCarthy, age 86, of Cantonment, passed away on August 26, 2011. Frank was a man of character and integrity who loved his family and his country and was loved by all. He was born in London, England, in 1924, where he served in the British Special Air Service. In 1955 he moved to Pensacola, FL. and was proudly naturalized as an American citizen. He retired from Monsanto Corporation after more than 30 years of service. He loved to spend time at the beach with his sons.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years Joanne McCarthy; loving sons Blane McCarthy (Melissa), and Dale McCarthy (Suzanne); stepchildren Wes Sharp, Linda Hurst, and Stephanie Joiner; amd grandchildren Andrew and Christopher McCarthy. Marianna Graham (Bobby), Jessica and Robbie
A memorial service will be held at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 30, 2011, at Eastern Gate Memorial Gardens in Pensacola. Donations to the American Cancer Society are encouraged in lieu of flowers.

Houston G. Conway, of Pensacola, the retired owner of Conway-Spence Insurance, passed away August 25, 2011, at his residence while surrounded by family and friends.
He was born June 21, 1922, in Huxford to Wilson E. and Maudie Mack Doriety Conway and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Eva Roach Conway; one daughter, Portia (Jim) Kimbrel; one grandson, Jameson Kimbrel, all of Pensacola; one sister, Trudie Harris of San Antonio, TX; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Monday, August 29, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel in Atmore with services at 2 p.m. in the chapel with Rev. Jim Willis officiating. Internment will follow at Godwin Cemetery in Bratt.
The family wishes to thank Tina, Jeanette, Keri and Mike of Regency Hospice, in addition to all the nurses and aides, and special family friend, Brenda Fowler, for all their love and support.

Ellen Voncille Brooks, 66 of Perdido, Al died Friday August 26, 2011, at her residence.
She was a homemaker, born in Monroe County, AL, to the late Varney C. and Ida Mae Smith Black.
She is survived by husband, Jimmie Brooks of Perdido; three daughters, Tammy L. Varnett and husband, Junior of Loxley, Shelia Janes and husband, Randy and Tracy Nichols all of Perdido; five grandchildren, John, Ashley, Brianna, Haven and Macy.
Services will be Monday August 29, 2011,, at 2 p.m. from the Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Elder V.M. Varnett officiating. Interment will follow in Brooks Cemetery in Baldwin County.
Family will receive friends, Sunday evening August 28, 2011, at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m.

Clione “Charlie” Crossley, 73, of Cantonment, passed away Saturday, August 27, 2011.
Born on June 14, 1938 in Canoe, Alabama, she had resided in the local area for many years. For more than 20 years, Charlie was a Cashier at Delchamps in Pensacola. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John David Crossley, Jr.; mother, Mable T. Goodwin and a sister, Vivian Phillips.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter and her daughter’s children, Carolyn Hooper and Courtney, Cameron and Ryan Hooper; son and daughter-in-law, David and Peggy Crossley and their children, Matthew, Kraig, John and Amanda Crossley and a sister, Daisy Ruth Guy.
The family will receive friends for one hour, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, August 30, 2011, at Pensacola Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Pensacola Memorial Gardens.

Nina Beck Weekes passed away Sunday, August 21, 2011. She was born September 12, 1932, to Rankin and Myrtle Beck.
She was preceded by both her parents; her husband, Ernest O. Weekes; her brothers, Stephen E. Beck, Ollie Gene Beck and Ellis Gerald Beck.
She is survived by her son, Kenneth Beck; her brother, Dr. Burton C. Beck of Orange Beach; her sister, Nila Kimmons; her best friend, Johnny Giddins and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be private.

Mr. Carl Peterson, Jr., 77, passed away on Saturday, August 20, 2011. in Pensacola.
Mr. Peterson was a native of Ft. Walton Beach and a resident of Byrneville for the past 45 years. He attended the Poplar Dell Baptist Church. He was a member of the Century Masonic Lodge #213 for 50 years where he served as former Master of the Lodge, former secretary, former district deputy and district instructor, and former chairman of several committees, the Scottish Rite, the Shriners, KCCH, and a gold proficiency card holder. He was retired from Monsanto after 34 years and a well-known cattle rancher.
He is survived by his wife, Janice Peterson of Byrneville; two sons, Andy Peterson of Byrneville, and Kenneth and Betty Peterson of Cottondale, FL; a daughter, Donna and Brian Holley of Pinckney, MI; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, John Peterson of Moss Point, MS; and three sisters, Betty Radford of Greenville, TN, Sandra and James Rodgers of Freeport, FL, and Patricia Peterson of Pensacola.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 25, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Mitch Herring officiating.
Burial will follow at Poplar Dell Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 24, 2011, from 6-9 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Patricia Diane Stephens, 55, a long time resident of Milton, FL, currently residing in Flomaton, AL, died Wednesday, August 17, 2011. She was a loving Mom and Granny.
Diane is survived by her mother, Jackie Stephens of Idaho Falls, ID; her daughters, Robin (Maurice) Dixon, Flomaton and Danielle (Luke) Whedbee, Silverhill, AL; her son Shawn (Tamara) Black, Greenville, SC; her sisters, Dana Stephens and Sherry Tew; her brothers, Mike, Kenneth, Terry and Timothy Stephens. Diane also has six grandchildren, Zack, Jamee, Caleb, Amari, Maurice and Ethan and many other relatives and friends.
A celebration of Diane’s life will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, August 27, 2011, at the Byrneville Community Center, Hwy. 4, in Byrneville.
Cremation arrangements are by Hughes Funeral Home & Crematory, 7951 American Way, in Daphne.

Lance Cpl. Travis Michael Nelson, 19, passed away on Thursday, August 18, 2011, in Afghanistan.
Mr. Nelson was a native of Orlando, a former resident of Pace for five years and a resident of Bratt for the past eight years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, a member of the Young Marines of Pensacola for four years, a member of the Pace High School NJROTC, and the Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Morris W. Nelson, Daniel Sanspree and his great-grandmother, Gladys Brunson.
He is survived by his parents, Scott and Beckie Sanspree Nelson of Bratt; fiancee Madeline Cates of Pace; brother, Daniel and Melissa Nelson of Century; half-brother, Chandler Case of Daphne; two sisters, Jenna Nelson and Kevin McCall of Brewton and Anna Nelson of Bratt; his grandmothers, Ann Sanspree of Atmore and Louise Nelson of Brewton; and a number of aunts and uncles.
Funeral services will be held Friday, August 26, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at the Atmore First Baptist Church with Chaplain Lt. Commander Jeffrey Bornemann and the Rev. George Weaver officiating with military honors.
Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Atmore.
Visitation will be held Friday, August 26, 2011, from 12:30 p.m. until funeral time at the Atmore First Baptist Church.
