Ruth Johnson

Mrs. Ruth Johnson, 91, passed away on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at a Mobile, AL hospital.

Mrs. Johnson was a native of Moyeville, AL, a former longtime resident of Flomaton, and a resident of Pineview for the past seven years. She was a former member of the Flomaton Pentecostal Church and a member of the Abundant Life Assembly of God Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Bill Johnson, 12 brothers and sisters, and a great-granddaughter, Julie Bradley.

She is survived by two sons, Daniel and Cindy Johnson of Pineview, and Henry and Wanda Johnson of Pineview; three grandchildren, Angie and Lavon Bradley of Flomaton, the Rev. Eric and Leslie Johnson of Flomaton, and Lauren Johnson of Pineview; three great-grandchildren, Ashley Bradley of Flomaton, Nikki and Eric Flowers of Brewton, and Blake Johnson of  Flomaton; and a great-great-grandchild, Zachary Flowers of Brewton.

Funeral services will be Saturday, January 7, 2012, at 10 a.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home in Atmore with the Rev. Eric Johnson and Roger Parker officiating.

Burial will follow at the Traveler’s Rest Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday, January 6, 2012, from 6-9 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Annie Leggett McLemore

January 5, 2012

Annie Leggett McLemore, 85, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, January 1, 2012, at Oakwood Center for Living in Bay Minette. She was born on October 31, 1926, in Seminary, MS , the daughter of Mary Gladys Leggett and was raised by her late grandparents Phillip and Idella Leggett. She proudly made Atmore her home for over 50 years.

She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and friend. She will be missed by everyone for her sweet spirit, her willingness to help anyone in need, and her many acts of kindness and generosity.

She worked at Porch Head Start for over 20 years and was a teacher for many of those years. She loved and cared deeply for all of her many students. After retiring from teaching, she went on to care for the elderly for several years. She was a faithful Christian and a member of Cross Point Baptist Church.

She was the widow of Bert A. McLemore. She was also preceded in death by her first husband Woodrow Pitts, who was killed in action in WWII, her mother Mary Leggett, her brother Rufus James Moss and her grandson Joey Irby.

She is survived by a loving family of two sons, Danny McLemore of Crawfordville, FL, and Glenn McLemore of Cape Coral, FL; and four daughters, Margaret and Fenton Miller of Charleston, SC, Diane and JR Maddox of Lutz, FL, Nita Monroe of Fairhope, AL, and Gina and Mitch White of Atmore; 14 grandchildren Evy MacNeil, Courtney Miller, John Irby, Daniel McLemore, Michael Maddox, Eric Maddox, Nicole McLemore, Paul McLemore, Adam McLemore, Blake Monroe, Amy Monroe, Clay White, Noah White, and Elise White; nine great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Pallbearers are John Irby, Michael Maddox, Daniel McLemore, Eric Maddox, Courtney Miller, and Blake Monroe. Honorary pallbearers are Adam McLemore, Paul McLemore, Clay White, and Noah White.

Funeral Service will be held Saturday January 7, 2012, at Cross Point Baptist Church in Atmore at 10 a.m. with burial following at Oak Hill Cemetery in Atmore.

Family will receive friends Friday January 6, 2012, at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m.

Beverly Nichols

January 3, 2012

Beverly Nichols, 65 of Atmore, Al died Saturday, December 31, 2011, at her residence.

She was a retired seamstress with Vanity Fair Mills. She was  born in Atmore on September 11, 1946, to the late Dallas H. and Ara Dean Bray Nichols.

She is surved by two brothers, Ralph Nichols of Uriah, and George E. Nichols of Bakersfield, CA; two nephews, Jeffery Nichols of Uriah and Johnny Nichols of Andalusia; and one niece, Penny Melton of Bakersfield, CA.

Graveside services will be Friday January 06, 2012, at 2 p.m. in Godwin Cemetery in Bratt with Rev. Mark Whittington officiating.

Lillie “Ates” Rowell

Lillie “Ates” Rowell was born on October 11, 1939 and went home to our Lord on January 2, 2011.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Society and the Jay Historical Society.
Ms. Rowell is survived by her children, Michael Rowell, Steven Rowell, Kenneth (Cherie) Rowell, Marion Rowell Blue, Dennis (Anne) Rowell, and Danny Rowell; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Barbara Barnes and Johanna Phillips; brothers, Curtis Ates and Colvin Ates; and cousin and special friend, Mary Phillips.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Fred Shelby Rowell; parents, Vinson and Minnie Ates; brothers, Clifford Ates, Cecil Ates, and Clinton Ates; sister, Betty Nelson and a lifelong friend, Grace Copeland.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, January 5, 2012, from 6-8 p.m. at Jay Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 6, 2012, at 2 p.m.  at Jay Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Community of Christ Cemetery in Berrydale.

Pat (Fred) White

January 2, 2012

Pat (Fred) White, 78 of Jay, passed into eternal rest on December 31, 2011, surrounded by his cherished family.

Pat was born May 24, 1933, in Jay to Albert and Bessie (Floyd) White. He married the love of his life, Janie Duke White, of Boaz, AL,  on June 19, 1961, and they were blessed with the birth of their only child, Patty, on August 27, 1964.

Pat worked and retired from the State of Florida Division of Forestry and was an active member of Berrydale United Pentecostal Church. He was a true outdoorsman “country boy” and sports fan. Sentimentally and lovingly known as “Tub” to many family members and friends, he enjoyed dog hunting, fishing, planting and working in his garden, tending to his goats, and attending livestock sales. In addition you could always find him watching Alabama Crimson Tide football and New York Yankees baseball.

Pat was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Janie; his parents, Albert and Bessie White, father-in-law and mother-in-law Hollis and Estelle Duke; brother, Floyd White; son-in-law, Jessie McGraw, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Billy and Wandean Farish; and a very special cousin and friend, G.W. White.

He is survived by his loving and dedicated daughter, Patty White McGraw; special sister-in-law, Mary Dell White, special brother-in-law, Jimbo Leatherwood; and nephews and nieces: Jimmy and Sue White, Sharon and Lyvon Phillips, Glenn and Paula White, Shellie, Kevin and Hallie Macht, Paige, Ashley, and Sawyer Baxley, Adam and Shelby White, and Justin and Joy White; other special people in his life  Dorothy Penton; Kevin, Hannah, and Madison Smith; devoted “Grand Dog”, Sport; and his feline companion, Sylvester; and a host of relatives, friends, and neighbors.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 3, 2012, from 6-8 p.m.  at Jay Funeral Home. Funeral and celebration of his life will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Jay Funeral Home with Reverend Billy Smith and Reverend Manuel Bennett officiating. Burial will follow at Walling Cemetary.

Kendall Grace Knowles

January 2, 2012

Miss Kendall Grace Knowles, age one week, passed away Sunday, January 1, 2012, in a Mobile hospital.

Miss Knowles was survived by her parents, Curtis and Anglea Knowles of Flomaton; maternal grandfather, Norman Daniels of Elba, AL; brothers, Kenneth Knowles and Bradley Knowles of Pace; sister, Carrie Knowles of Niceville; Aunts, Barbara Jestings of Birmingha, and Shirley Petty of Flomaton.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Willie and Fannie Knowles; and maternal grandmother, Patricia Daniels.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 4, 2012, at 10 a.m. from the chapel of Craver’s Funeral Home with Rev. Jimmie Colley officiating. Interment will follow in Little Escambia Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at Craver’s Funeral Home on Tuesday from 6 – 8 p.m.

Gladys Marie (Joyner) Hawthorne

January 1, 2012

Gladys Marie (Joyner) Hawthorne age 89 of Jay, went to be with her Heavenly Father on December 31, 2011. She was born in Owassa, AL, on February 10, 1922. She retired from Jay Hospital after working for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Coady Hawthorne; son, Jessie Oliver and two grandchildren.

She is survived by her six children, Hazel Barrow, Ann Malshuk, Vernia (Buddy) White, Richard (Deborah) Hawthorne, Ronnie Hawthorne, and Chiquita (Jim) Lockhart; eight grandchildren, Keith Stanton, Nick Malshuk, Candice Thornton, April Cullen, Richard Hawthorne, Kenneth White, Brooke Ehly, and Justin White; brother, Curtis (Eva) Joyner and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She loved her family and church family, working outside with her roses and flowers, and looked forward to seeing her Heavenly Father.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 4, 2012, from 6-9 p.m. at Jay Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 5, 2012, at 11 a.m. at True Worship Assembly of God Church with Bro. Adam Peterson officiating services. Burial will follow at Concord Primitive Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Jerry Nelson, Randy Morris, James Earl Diamond, Jeff Wolfe, Johnny Watson, and Richard Walther.

Honorary pallbearers will be Skip Thompkins, Lonny Williams, and Phil Calhoun.

Betty Jane Shroyer

January 1, 2012

Betty Jane Shroyer age 77 of Jay, went to grace peacefully resting at home on December 30, 2011. She was born in Allen County, Indiana, on November 8, 1934, the first child to Eugene (Gene) and Cecil (Holsworth) Thorne. In her youth, Betty was an active member of 4H, Zion Church, and Jackson Township High School. Betty enjoyed a variety of interests, especially senior affairs and church activities but delighted in raising her daughter and three sons. Her chosen profession was respiratory therapist from which she retired in 1991.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents, sister Juva Sterling and grandchildren Carol Shroyer and Jennifer Shroyer.

Betty is survived by her loyal and loving husband of 59 years; brother, Jim Thorne; sisters, Nita Endsley and Mary Albright; daughter, Elizabeth Dellinger; sons, Lewis, David, and John; grandchildren, Amy, Daniel, Robert, John Shaw, Katie Ann Shaw, and Allison Shaw.

Services will be held at Jay United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 4, 2012, with fellowship to follow. All are welcome to fellowship with family and friends.

The family would like to give a warm thank you to Dr. C. David Smith and staff.

In lieu of flowers a donation may be given to the Jay United Methodist Church Youth at Jay United Methodist Church, 14093 Alabama St., Jay, FL  32565.

Fae Duffy

December 31, 2011

Fae Duffy, 89, of Pensacola, passed away December 28, 2011 at home with her family at her side. She was born October 31, 1922 in Dixonville, FL to Riley J. and Eunice Calhoun.

Fae graduated from Jay High School and went on to work for St. Regis Paper Co. where she met her husband, Walter H. Duffy, Sr. They were married November 8, 1947.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter H. Duffy, Sr.; two sons, Roger Timothy Duffy and Walter H. “Bubba” Duffy, Jr.; twin sister, Mae Travis; brothers, Bryan Calhoun, Harvey Calhoun and Ralph Calhoun.

She is survived by her children, Francene (Philip) Russell, Susan Wilson, Greg (Leslie) Duffy and Steve Duffy; grandchildren, Christopher Wilson, Heather Wilson Edwards, Jeremy Wilson, Ryan Duffy, Joshua Duffy, Kelly Russell Snodgrass, Kevin Russell, Stephanie Duffy and Bryan Duffy; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; sisters, Olive Wise, Dorothy Russell, Glynn Gatlin and Doris Kilgore.

Her Memorial Service will be at 11a.m. on Monday, January 2, 2012 at Eastern Gate Memorial Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

The family would like to sincerely thank the Emerald Coast Hospice staff for the care, support and comfort they provided, and granddaughter-in-law Sandi Wilson for her knowledgeable care.

Ted D. McGlothren, Sr.

December 30, 2011

Ted D. McGlothren, Sr. age 83, passed away Thursday, December 29, 2011. He was a member of Victory Assembly of God.

Ted retired from Champion Paper Company after 40 years of service. He was one of the founders of Cottage Hill Water Works. He helped build and establish Cottage Hill Assembly of God and later helped build the fellowship hall at Victory Assembly. Ted also served as a deacon at both churches. To his family, friends and community he was one that was always willing to give his time and talents to those in need.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Darby McGlothren, his sons, Ted McGlothren, Jr. and his wife Angela, Ronny McGlothren and his wife Ruth, his daughter, Donna Lancaster and her husband Greg, son Larry Thomas and his wife Pam, daughter Lynn Hodge and her husband Jackie, nine grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, one brother, Dewey McGlothren, special uncle, Charles McGlothren and numerous other relatives.

Preceding him in death was his first wife, Edith Williams McGlothren,  sister, Dell McGlothren and  brother, Willard McGlothren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, January 2, 2012, at Victory Assembly of God Church with Rev. Jeff McKee officiating. Interment will follow at Cottage Hill Assembly of God Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday, January 1, 2012, from 5-8 p.m.
