Billy Floyd

Billy Floyd passed away on Mar 23, 2012, at his home in Bay St. Louis, MS. Billy was born in Atmore on March 31, 1943.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Martha Houck Floyd; a daughter, LaDonna Floyd Dervin (Mike); two grand-daughters, Schuyler Marie Dervin and Jessica Elizabeth Dervin; two sisters, Janice Floyd Malone (Bill) and Delanith Floyd Donelson; a brother -in-law, Larry Houck (Betty) and his mother-In-law, Helen Courtney. Billy is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceeded in death by his parents, Collis Floyd and Edna Presley; one sister, Anne Floyd Dunn and a nephew, Raymond Scott Wilson.

Billy graduated from Escambia County High in 1960 and has a degree in computer science. He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Tech SGT after 21 years of meritorious service. Billy is a distinguished graduate of the Air Force NCO Academy, a Vietnam veteran, the recipient of the Republic of Vietnam Gallant Cross, the Vietnam Service Medal, the RVN Campaign Medal and many other awards. He also retired from the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVO) Stennis Space Center, Pearlington, MS, after 20 years in computer operations. During his lifetime, Billy loved mechanical work, computers, and was an avid fisherman. He followed the Saints and the Alabama Crimson Tide but foremost was his devotion to God, family and the U.S.A.

Funeral services will be held, Monday 26, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Atmore Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Godwin Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Sunday, March 25, 2012, from 5-7 p.m. at Atmore Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.

Annie Lillian Hudson Thompson

Annie Lillian Hudson Thompson also known as “Nama” to her family and friends was born on March 8th, 1917 in Century FL. Nama passed away peacefully on March 20th, 2012 at the Lord at Covenant Hospice in Pensacola FL.

She was born to the late Benjamin and Mabil Hudson of Century, FL as one of eleven brothers and sisters, Quinton Hudson, BW Hudson, Richard Hudson, Frank Hudson, Evelyn Blount, Mary Ellen Holman, Mabil (Claire) Rosser, Marcie Owens, Jean Eddy and Margaret Ramsey.

Nama married Clinton E. Thompson of Pensacola, Fl on June 13th, 1934 a romance that would last over 50 years until his passing in 1987. During that time, Nama and Clinton had two sons, Clinton Jr. and Michael. She spent many years raising her two sons and supporting her husband’s career in the U.S. Navy. Over the next 20 years, Nama and her family would move to San Diego CA, Norfolk VA and finely back to Pensacola where she lived out the remainder of her life. While living in Pensacola, Nama and her family attended Brownville Assembly of God.

A big part of Nama’s life was her sister and best friend Claire. Throughout the years, not a day would go by without Nama and Claire talking on the phone, shopping or just spending time with each other. The two were inseparable. Nama also had another trusted companion, Sweaty Pie, her Toy Poodle that she loved dearly.

Nama will forever be remembered by her devoted son Michael Thompson Sr., his wife Ermina of Fresno CA, his sons Michael Jr. of Jacksonville FL and Kenneth, his wife Angela and their three daughters, Haylee, Paige and Madison of Pensacola FL, along with countless other family and friends whom were blessed to know her.

The family would like to specifically acknowledge the special love, care and support provided by Ms. Judy Teutsch, her son and daughter Wesley Teutsch, Teresa Ward and their families.

Nama touched the lives of many people with her smile and generosity, and maintained her faith in God until the end. Friends and family are invited to meet and reflect at 2 PM followed by a memorial service officiated by Pastor Hudson on Saturday, March 24th, 2012 at 3 PM. The service will be held at Pensacola Memorial Gardens, 7433 Pine Forrest Rd, Pensacola, FL.

Patsy (Pat) Spears

Pat Spears (Rocspear) went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, after a full and precious life with those that knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents Clarence and Brite Spears, a sister, Evelyn Grogan a brother, Bill Spears and K-9’s Zack and Lucky.

Pat leaves to cherish her memory a loving family: Joan Rocco, Doris (Phil) Phillips, Katie (Gardner) Gage, Vickie (Grady) Reeves, Walter (Sheri) Hundley Jr., Vanette (Jim) Webb, Verna Hundley, Yonnie (Jerry) Bosquet, Kay (Jay) Lewis, Cathy Setzer, Caron (Steve) Zampino, Larry (Janet) Spears, Linda (Dale) Smith, Debbie Drozd, 16 great nieces and nephews, numerous great-great nieces and nephews and her special pets Mystic, Magic and Meow-Meow.

Pat was a 29 year veteran of the Escambia County Sheriff’s Department where she served under five sheriffs. Pat started with the county as a correctional officer in 1982, transferring to the sheriff’s department as a deputy sheriff in 1986 and rising to the rank of 1st lieutenant. Pat worked in many divisions of the sheriff’s department during her tenure. She worked in investigations, was a K-9 officer for six years, worked in TAC/DIET Section, Street Crimes Unit, was Assistant Officer in Charge of Community Policing, and Community Relations. She also served as Officer in Charge of the Explorer Unit, was a Drug Court Mentor, she was appointed as a U.S. Customs Officer in the Blue Lightening Operation and worked tirelessly to help with Hurricane Katrina cleanup. Pat was an outstanding public servant and a champion of the community. She retired from the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office in January 2011.

For her dedicated service she received numerous recognitions which included a certificate of appreciation for the fight against drugs for her work with the Lincoln Park Community Drug Watch, several unit citations, a letter from the City of Pensacola congratulations for Unit Citation for Community Policing Unit.

Pat touched the lives of so many and will hold a special place in the hearts of all those who knew her, as a loving aunt, a partner, a friend, a mentor and a protector.

She had a gift of caring and giving and gave continuously to the community and to those around her. She was our rock and will be dearly missed by all.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 24, at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North. Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m. with her nephew Jason Reeves officiating.

William “Bill” Meadows Jr.

William “Bill” Meadows Jr., age 91 of Molino, passed away on Monday, March 19, 2012. He was born on April 21, 1920, in Akron, OH. He was a longtime member of the Masons and the Shriners. Bill attended Allen Memorial Methodist Church. He was a mechanical engineer who worked for NASA and the Veteran’s Administration.

He is preceded in death by his two sons, Paul and Walter Meadows and a daughter, Theresa Meadows.

He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Meadows; sons, Ralph P. Meadows (Kay), Thomas Meadows, Gerald Meadows (Angie) and Williams Meadows (Candace); daughter, Carol A. Gray (John Uniek); grandchildren, R. Phillip Meadows II, Heather Hayes, Joy Meadows, Crystal Meadows, Ashley Weems, Alex Meadows, Marina Gray, Cheyenne Gray, Mason Meadows, Julia Meadows and Brayden Meadows and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to The Shriners Children’s Burn Center or Allen Memorial United Methodist Church in Cantonment.

Pallbearers will be John Uniek, Phillip Meadows, Harold Hayes, Jeff Crichton, Eric Crichton and Pete Wilson.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 23, 2012, at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North with Reverend Andy Gartman officiating. Interment will follow at Aldersgate Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the funeral service.

Opal Thomas

March 23, 2012

Opal Thomas, age 91, of Cantonment, passed away March 20, 2012. She was born January 7, 1921, in Bush, LA, to the late Vaughn Cowart and Margana Grantham Cowart.

Opal owned and operated Forget Me Not Shop, a florist in Cantonment, for many years. She was also a long time member of Pinehaven Missionary Baptist Church where she was committed not only to her faith in God, but also helping others in time of need. Most of all Opal enjoyed gardening; she loved growing flowers and vegetables.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Warren Thomas.

Survivors include two daughters, Wanna (Don) Caverly of Valparaiso, FL,and Morgana Thomas of Tallahassee, FL; two brothers, Vaughn Cowart Jr. of Bush, LA, and Amos Cowart of Covington, LA; four grandchildren, Korinne Harper, Kristen Caverly, Cate Shannon and Sara Rabon; and 10 great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be Saturday, March 24, 2012, at 2 p.m. Pinehaven Missionary Baptist Church in Pensacola with Pastor Jimmy Lancaster officiating. Interment will be at Barrancas National Cemetery at a later date.

Betty Lou Glass Hinnant

March 23, 2012

Betty Lou Glass Hinnant was born on May 10, 1936, was born again on June 7, 1964, and entered the loving embrace of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on March 19, 2012. She was born in McDavid to her loving parents, Charlie Clinton Glass and Lottie Cobb Glass, who preceded her in death.

Betty was married to the late Leroy Hinnant and together they parented five adoring children who survive them. Her children are Kathryn Elaine Hinnant, Wanda Hinnant Bell (Ron), Sandra Kaye Hinnant, Phillip Leon Hinnant, all of Pensacola, and Donald Eugene Hinnant (Sherri) of Pleasant City, Ohio. Additionally she is survived by a sister, Dorothy Unger, of Virginia, many nephews and nieces, as well as a host of adoring grandchildren (16) and great grandchildren (17), who will miss their (Ma-Maw) beyond words.

Betty was a conscientious, loyal and hard worker who faithfully served her employers at both Monsanto (11 years) and Armstrong World Industries (21 years).

She was a faithful and loving member of Cornerstone Baptist Church of Pensacola, where she served her Lord passionately. We will miss you Betty but we will never forget you!

The Reverend Bobby Smith, pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church, will lead a celebration of Betty’s life on Friday March 23, 2012, at 11 a.m. in The Pensacola Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home Chapel on Pine Forest Road in Pensacola. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. prior to the funeral.

The family would like to thank Baptist Manor and Covenant Hospice of Pensacola for their tender loving care.

Roger Steele

Roger Steele, 78, of Pensacola passed away Sunday, March 18, 2012.

Roger was born in Oak Grove and after graduating from Ernest Ward High School in Walnut Hill, he served in the US Air Force for four years. Roger, an electrical engineer, was retired from Armstrong after 36 years of service to the company. His hobbies were fishing, camping and gardening. Roger was loved by all who knew him and helping others was his trademark. His strong Christian ethics were evident in his lifestyle. He was a faithful, long time member of East Brent Baptist Church.

Preceding Roger in death are his parents, Alex Steele and Elizabeth Greer Steele; grandson, Michael Steele and two brothers, Marshal and Aamond.

Survivors include his devoted wife of 54 years, Willa Jean (Lassiter) Steele; daughter, Shelby Brown (Randy); son, Alfred Steele; grandchildren, Lee and Heather Brown; great grandson, John; granddaughter, Nichole Weaver; one sister, Laverne Passmore (Melton-deceased); 8 brothers, Raymond (Ruby-deceased), Juber (Ethel), Edward (Fran), Cleveland (Ann), Aaron (Carolyn), Artis (Syble), Onoree (Brenda), Bennie (Eloise), and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 21, 2012, at the church with Brother Dale Patterson officiating.

Interment followed at Pensacola Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearerswere Jeremy and Adam Merritt, Gary, Glen, Ronnie, Allen and Dale Steele and Bobby Passmore.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the East Brent Baptist Church Building Fund.

Hannas Dean Donald

March 21, 2012

Hannas Dean Donald, a longtime resident of Atmore, went to be with her Lord on March 18, 2012. She was born to Noah and Anna Dean Wesley on September 1, 1919, in Little River, AL.

She was the only living charter member of Brooks Memorial Baptist Church where she served faithfully those many years. She loved the Lord, her family, her church and community.  She was honored by the Atmore Community Hospital Auxilary for 27 years of volunteer service. She will be missed by her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Amon Elihue Donald; daughter, Virginia Donald Miller and three siblings.

She was survived by a son, Weldie Donald and wife, Loyce of Atmore; daughter, Lorraine Donald May and husband, Bill of McKinney, TX; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday March 21, 2012, at 11 a.m. from Brooks Memorial Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Grindle and Rev. Dave Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in Serenity Gardens in Atmore.

The family will receive friends, Tuesday, March 20, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home.

Truman Lane Heatwole

March 20, 2012

Truman Lane Heatwole, 4 months old, passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

He was born on November 6, 2011, and was the son of Micah and Krista Classen Heatwole.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are a brother, Lincoln Heatwole; maternal grandparents, Steve and Treva Classen of Walnut Hill, Florida, and paternal grandparents, Richard and Marj Heatwole of Harrisonburg currently of Atmore, AL; maternal great grandmother, Elizabeth of Walnut Hill, paternal great grandparents, Dwight and Fannie Heatwole of Virginia.

The family will receive friends at a dinner from 5 until 6 p.m. Friday, March 16, 2012, at Harrisonburg Mennonite Church. Pastor Daryl Driver and Philip Fisher Rhodes will conduct a funeral service following the dinner at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary.

A burial will be held at Dayton Mennonite Cemetery on Saturday, March 17, 2012, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Richard Heatwole officiating.

Merle Kittrell

Merle Kittrell of Cantonment went to be with her Lord on Sunday, March 18, 2012. She will always be remembered as a loving daughter, sister, niece, aunt and great aunt.

She was preceded in death by her father, James W. Kittrell and her brother, James D. Kittrell.

Survivors include her mother, Lorraine Kittrell (Fred Peacock); sisters, Cindy Weaver, Cathy Rives (Reggie), and Debbie Funderburg; nieces, one nephew and many great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 22, 2012, at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. with services to begin at 11 a.m. with Reverend Darrell Black and Reverend John Kurtz officiating. Interment will follow at Lathram Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Ken Irwin, Greg Carlisle, Keith Carlisle, Weston Weaver, Gabe Jackson and Billy Corley. Honorary pallbearer will be Reggie Rives.
