William H. Phillips (Bill)

Mr. William H. Phillips (Bill) lost his valiant battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) on March 19, 2013, at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama.

Bill, a native of Atmore, was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey L. and Mildred Ellison Phillips.

Plagued by many medical issues throughout his life, Bill never lost his joy for life. His goal in life was to provide for his wife of almost 39 years, Peggy Donaldson Phillips; three sons,
William Sheldon (Casey) Phillips, Chad Harvey Phillips (Becky Harper), Brandon Charles (Marsha) Phillips; daughter, Chaselyn K. Phillips; two sisters, Joyce P. Sellers and Barbara P.
(Wayne) Harrison; and one brother, Joseph A. (Becky) Phillips. He is also survived by four grandchildren.

Bill loved the land and farmed for many years. After he was no longer able to farm, he worked in the parts department of Escambia Farm Equipment Co. in Atmore.

Bill struggled with Multiple Sclerosis for many years, and was diagnosed with AML in 2011.

He was a member of McRae Street United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 22, 2013, at 2 p.m. from the Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Diane Everette officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be nephews: Chris Harrison, Travis Harrison, Michael Harrison, Jonathon Phillips, Jarard Phillips, Ray Sellers, Shane Godwin, Blake Godwin, Michael Donaldson and
Steven Donaldson.

William Richard “Dick” Moye, Sr.

March 19, 2013

William Richard “Dick” Moye, Sr., 80, went to be with his Lord on March 16, 2013, after a brief illness. He was born in the Pineview Community of Brewton on March 20, 1932, to Clifford Vernon Moye and Ida Ruth Bagwell Moye. He married the love of his life in October 1954 and had six children.

He operated businesses in Brewton for fifteen years. He moved to Pensacola in 1969 as a salesman at Pensacola Buggy Works where he worked for five years. In 1973, he launched out and created his own business, Dick Moye Auto Sales, Inc., where he has served the transportation needs of the Pensacola area for 40 years. It began on Barrancas Avenue in 1973 and moved to North Old Palafox Road in 1979 and it still operates today. At his death, he was the oldest used car dealer in Pensacola.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Ray Moye and Clifford Moye.

He is survived by his wife, Ella Monk Moye; sister, Gladys Andrews of East Brewton; six children, Richard Vernon “Dicky” Moye (Pam), Angela Moye Douglas (Mike), Alicia Moye McCormick (Terry), William Richard “Richie” Moye, Jr. (Dana), William Russell “Rusty” Moye (Mandy), and Timothy Warren Moye (Maria); 15 grandchildren, Candice Stokes (John), Pamela Williams (Jason), Joshua Moye, Shane Moye (Kayla), Sara Henderson (Bill), Ashley McCormick, Brittany Moye, Richard “RJ” Moye , Preston Moye, Melissa Moye, Casey Moye, Jolene Douglas, Russ Moye, Brad Moye, and Trenton Moye; six great-grandchildren, Courtney Stokes, Katelyn Stokes, McKenzie Williams, Kash Brown, Parker Moye, and Reagan Williams; and numerous nieces and nephews; special friend, Dwayne Davis, Jr.; his beloved pet, KoKo; and many friends.

He was a member of Ray’s Chapel Baptist Church where he served as trustee and was on the Finance Committee.

Visitation will be Tuesday, March 19, 2013, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North.

Burial will follow in Ray’s Chapel Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be RJ, Shane, Preston, Josh, Brad, Casey, Russ Moye and Dwayne Davis, Jr.

Honorary pallbearers will be company technicians, Billy Hedrick, Rick Kortz, Donald Carter, and Giles Laframboise.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that donations be made to Covenant Hospice, West Florida Hospital.

Betty Jean Caraway Millikan

March 19, 2013

Betty Jean Caraway Millikan, 58 of Loxley, passed away March 17, 2013, in Daphne.  She was born July 24, 1954, in Atmore to the late Gene and Sue Taylor Caraway.

She is survived by her daughter, Tara Franklin of Loxley; son, Justin J.T. Franklin of Loxley; brothers, James Caraway of Atmore, Mark Caraway and Scott Caraway, both of Pensacola; grandchildren, Marshall Tre Wall, III, Peyton Allison Franklin, Cameron Franklin and Kendra Franklin.

Funeral Services will be Thursday, March 21, 2013, at 3 p.m. from the Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Wesley Enfinger officiating.

Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 20, 2013, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. from the Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home.

Mary Land

March 19, 2013

Mary Land, 97, of Berrydale, went to be with her Lord and Savior on March 18, 2013. Born in Tennessee, she had resided in Berrydale since moving to Florida at age 7. Her father, Francis Kirby Cantrell, died when she was a child. She was raised by her loving stepfather and mother, A.Q. & Ruth Hicks, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by husband Gordon Land; daughter and son-in-law Lula Mae and Donald Hunter; sister, Mabel Ward; and brother, David Cantrell.

She is survived by her son, Vance Land; grandson, Dexter Hunter (Bonnie); granddaughter, Kaitlin Hunter; dear friend and loving caregiver, Imogene Reeder; compassionate caregiver, Gloria Butler; very special nieces and nephews; a host of grown “children” who considered her a second mother; and numerous friends.

She was a faithful member of Pine Grove Baptist Church and Order of Eastern Star, Jay Chapter. She loved needlework, gardening, cooking, and helping others.

Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at Jay Funeral Home with OES services at 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 21, 2013, at Pine Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Wayne Brown and Rev. Ladon Hall officiating.

Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be a few of those she loved as her own children, Russell Reeder, Joe Reeder, Rusty Reeder, Ben West, Don West, and David West.

Honorary pallbearers will be special friend Winnie (Tiny) Copeland, members of Pine Grove adult Sunday school class, and John David Reeder.

John Garrard, Jr.

March 18, 2013

John Garrard, Jr., 86, of Atmore, passed away Sunday, March 17, 2013, in Atmore.

John was a native of Flora, MS, where he graduated as valedictorian of Flora High School. John enlisted in the United States Navy, and served his country during World War II. In 1949, after graduating from Millsaps College with a degree in economics and business administration, he moved to Atmore. John served as president and CEO of First National Bank of Atmore, and also served as city councilman of Atmore for 16 years. He was on many committees and clubs, but above all, he loved serving his church, First United Methodist Church, the City of Atmore, and the Atmore Public Library.

John was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Fonda; his parents, Annie Hayles Garrard and John Garrard; two brothers, Bobby Garrard and Bennie Garrard; and one sister, Myrtle Garrard Bowman.

John is survived by two sons, John Michael (Gail) Garrard and David Garrard; granddaughters, Kelly (Rusty) Howard and Lori Beth (Michael) Diller; five great-grandchildren, Anna Kate Howard, Alex Howard, John William Howard, Logan Diller, and Ella Grace Diller; one step-grandson, Blaine McFarland; and one step-granddaughter, Dana (Tony) Campise; and three step-grandchildren, Cala, Hannah and Cody Morrison.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 21, 2013, from the First United Methodist Church in Atmore, with the Rev. Jim Reece officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery with military honors.

Visitation will be held Thursday, March 21, 2013, from 9:00 a.m. until service time at 11:00 a.m.

Active pallbearers will be Blaine McFarland, Dr. Jonah McIntyre, Rob Faircloth, Jr., Stephen Van Pelt, Ted Presley, Larry Houck, Mayor Howard Shell and Mayor Jim Staff.

Honorary pallbearers will be the First National Bank Retirees Club and their spouses, the Atmore VFW, and past City Councilmen Chris Walker, Webb Nall, Louie Turner III, Cornell Torrence.

Zell Barnes Brantley

March 18, 2013

Mrs. Zell Barnes Brantley, age 91, of Flomaton, passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2013, at her home.

Mrs. Brantley was a native of Escambia County, AL and a lifetime member of the Flomaton community where she was a homemaker and a member of Century Church of Christ. Mrs. Brantley was preceded in death by her husbands, Hunter Brantley and Wade Grice, Sr.

She is survived by her sons, Jerry (Ann) Brantley, Jack Brantley, both of Flomaton; step-son, Wade Guice, Jr., of Flomaton; daughters, Wanda (Evon) Johnson and Cheryl (Randy) Turner, both of Flomaton; sister, Dorothy Carden of Flomaton; 10 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at 10 a.m. until a service time at 11 a.m. with Minister Clifford Dixon officiating.

Interment will be in Hollywood Cemetery in Flomaton.

Pallbearers will be Robert Carden, Lewie Joe Smith, Mark Autrey, Josh White, Bubba Pridgen, Johnny Burkhead.

James “Peanut” McDonald

March 17, 2013

James “Peanut” McDonald, 72, passed away March 16, 2013. He was a resident of Canoe, AL, and was born on September 4, 1940 in Atmore He was retired from Smurfit Stone. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Cecil and Elizabeth Octavia Jaye McDonald and his brother George William McDonald.

He is survived by his wife, Rebecca McDonald and daughters, Felicia Pettis (Lee) of Monroeville, AL. and Rebecca Smith (Ben) of Atmore, brother, Bobby McDonald and grandchildren Stephen Pettis, Jessica Black (Marshall), Sam Smith, Will Smith and one great granddaughter Rebecca Elizabeth Black.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 18, 2013, at 2 p.m.from the First Baptist Church of Atmore with Rev. Arnold Hendrix officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Monday, March 18, 2013, from noon until service time at 2 p.m. from the First Baptist Church of Atmore.

Helen C Barnett

March 16, 2013

Helen C Barnett, age 78 of Cantonment, passed away on March 13, 2013.

She was preceded in death by her husband Marvie Barnett, parents Henry and Christian Williams, five sisters and one brother. Helen’s home always smelled of wonderful food and you were held captive until you had some of her good country cooking.

Mrs. Barnett is survived by her two daughters, Connie Barnett and Kim (Andy) Blackman; six grandchildren, Derek, Ethan Lee Edward, Nicholas, Christian, Charity and Noah.

Visitation will be on Saturday, March 16 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Eastern Gate Memorial Funeral Home with the funeral on Sunday, March 17 at 2:00 p.m. also at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Eastern Gate Memorial Gardens.

Albert Allen Miller

Albert Allen Miller was born to John Henry and Daisy Mae Miller in Boothtown, AL, on May 29, 1927, and departed to his Heavenly Home on March 12, 2013. He was a member of Marcus Pointe Baptist Church. He was a self-employed building contractor in Northwest Florida.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Margaret G. Miller; his daughter, Debra Grace Miller and two brothers, Leo and Thurman Miller.

He is survived by his children: sons, William (Bill) Miller (Mattie) of Molino, Joe Miller (Faye) of Holt and Rick Miller (Diana) of Milton; daughter, Brenda Johnson (Roy) of Bogia; 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren; sister, Eloise Turner; two brothers, Bobby and Benny Miller.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gideons International or Regency Hospice.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 15, 2013, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North.

Billy Joe Chancery

Mr. Billy Joe Chancery, age 76, of Brewton, passed away Monday, March 11, 2013, in a Pensacola hospital.

Mr. Chancery was a native and life long resident of Brewton. He was a graduate of W.S. Neal High School and was retired from the U.S. Army. After his retirement he worked as a pipefitter in the construction industry for a number of years. He was a member of Dogwood Hills Assembly of God. Mr. Chancery was preceded in death by a child; his parents, Albert Chancery and Gaynell Watson; brothers, Albrey Chancery, Charles Chancery, John Chancery, Bobby Chancery, and Mike Chancery; sisters, Barbara Chancery, and Eula Mae Chancery Vuittonet.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Adreth Brown Chancery of Brewton; two sons, Greg (Cindi) Chancery of Mobile, Rick (Terri) Chancery of Loxley; two brothers, Glynn (Gloria) Chancery of Osceola, AK, and Earl (Rachel) Chancery of Flomaton; three sisters, Walterene Kelley of Jay, Geraldine (Tyrone) Lowry of Flomaton, and Patricia (Dennis) Myrick of Gosnell, AK; three grandchildren, Erica (Cory) Cox, Heather Thomas, and Jamie Digman; three great-grandchildren, Jay Digman, Benjamin Cox, and Macy Cox.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 14, 2013, at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Craver’s Funeral Home with Rev. Thomas Quick, Rev. Jackie Davis officiating. Interment will follow in Canaan Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at Craver’s Funeral Home on Wednesday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.
