Mary Catherine Brown

Mary Catherine Brown, 69 of Century, passed away Sunday, October, 13, 2013. She was employed by Arvin Automotive. She was born on December 26, 1943, in Greenwood, Indiana to the late Earnest and Edna Akers Forward.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Robert J. Brown.

Survivors include two daughters, Kimberly (Timothy) Norton of Century and Renee Brown of Indianapolis, Indiana; two brothers, Ralph Forward of Daytona and Jim Forward of Trafalgar, Indiana; two sisters, Sue Taylor of Trafalgar, Indiana and Marsha Williams of Greenwood, Indiana; three grandchildren, Kyle Lamphire, Gentry Scutchfield, and Jared English.

Services will be Thursday, October 17, 2013, at 10 a.m. from the Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Jonathan McCullough officiating.

Interment will follow in Presley Cemetery in Lottie, Ala.

Family will receive friends Wednesday, October 16, 2013, at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Lawrence Beauford Davis

October 14, 2013

Lawrence Beauford Davis, 82 of Atmore, passed away Monday, October 14, 2013.

He served in the United States Marine Corps, United States Navy  and United States Air Force. He was born in Atmore. on October 9, 1931, to the late Charles Lee and Mattie Matheny Davis.

Survivors are his wife, Janice R. Davis; one son, Larry (Phyllis) Davis; four daughters, Laura (Travis) Roberson. Michelle Wingard, Tabith J. Edy, and Debbie Neal; one sister, Pat Johnson; and a  number of grandchildren.

Graveside services will be Tuesday October 15, 2013, at 11: 45 a.m. n Barrancas National Cemetery with full military honors, Rev. Joe Welch officiating.

Family will receive friends, Monday October 14, 2013, at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m.

Nobie Johnson Purnell Cobb

Nobie Johnson Purnell Cobb, 100, of Huxford, passed away Sunday, October 13, 2013, in Atmore. She was a homemaker, born in Ollie, Ala., on September 22, 1913, to the late John Wesley and Laura Gandy Johnson. She was Past Worthy Matron of Huxford, Clayron Chapter, order of Eastern Star, and was also a member of the Huxford Baptist Church.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bernie Cobb; step-son, Swenson Cobb; and grandson, Billy Purnell; three brothers, Joe Johnson, John Johnson and J.B. Johnson; eight sisters, Daisy Smith, Mary Harrison, Beulah Wiggins, Mittie Durant, Neecy Brittingham, Fannie Crist, Lucille Small and Essie Johnson; one stepson-in-law, Frank Smith.

Survivors include, tw0 sons, Ronnie (Ethel) Purnell and Ralph (Linda) Purnell; step-son, Frank (Karen) Cobb; one daughter, Kay Purnell (Terrell) Mason; step-daughter, Sandra Cobb Smith; nine grandchildren, Sim Purnell, Nancy (Don) Findley, Rachael Stephens, Sherrie (Tim) Walker, Mike Smith, Leigh Anne Kalphus, Blake (Ellen) Smith, Ian Cobb and Tyler Cobb; 10 great-grandchildren, Chase Purnell, Abigail Purnell, Thomas Blum, Nicky Findley, Alex Findley, Cheyenne Walker (Chris) Murphy, Tiffany Walker, Ethan Walker, Hannah Stephens, and Seth Stephens; five great-great-grandchildren, Derek Blum, Kyleigh Findley, Ashley Smith, Madeline Smith and BrittanyKalphus.

Services will be Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at 10 a.m. from Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. James Boyd and Rev. Jesse Wood officiating.

Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Active pallbearers are Jamie Booker, Eddie Booker, Todd Booker, Gerald Parmer, Olin Parmer and Gerald Jones.

Family will receive friends, Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m.

Bill McKay

October 13, 2013

Bill McKay, 73, of Cantonment, died Thursday, October 10, 2013, of an apparent heart attack.Mr. McKay was born in Houston County, AL, and attended Dothan, AL, schools before moving with his family to Pensacola in 1953. He was salutatorian of his class at Blount Junior High School, and graduated from Pensacola High School in 1957.

He was employed in the motor freight transportation business for several years, and was retired from Southern Scrap. He was past King of Fiesta Frolickers.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eunice Inez and Sidney Murray McKay of Dothan.

Survivors include his wife, Ginger Odom McKay of Cantonment; two daughters, Suzanne McKay Strasser and her husband, Jeff Strasser of Orlando, and Tanya McKay of Orlando; their mother, Betty L. McKay of Pensacola; three grandsons, Justin and Nic Strasser, and Gavin McKay, all of Orlando; two sisters, Betty McKay Vann of Dothan, and Patricia McKay Balderson and her husband, Lew, of Kennesaw, GA.; a nephew, Bob Vann of Mary Esther, and a niece, Karen V. Lawrence of Dothan; a great-nephew and a great-niece; a step daughter, Jennifer Chittipangna and three step grandsons of Watkinsville, GA; and several cousins.

Services were held Monday, October 14, 2013, at noon at Faith Chapel South on Beverly Parkway.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the American Heart Association .

William L. Averitte

October 12, 2013

William L. Averitte, 84, of Cantonment, passed away October 8, 2013, at Baptist Hospital.

William was born January 30, 1929, in the Vander community near Fayetteville, NC. He loved his family and childhood, saying he grew up in the best time in history, despite being born the year the Great Depression began. He served in the Army and met his wife Mary Ann at a Lawrence Welk dance while stationed in Wisconsin. He attended North Carolina State University on a GI bill, where he studied industrial engineering and then went to work for Westinghouse in Raleigh, NC. He retired as a senior engineer from the Pensacola Westinghouse plant.

Bill enjoyed many hobbies, including woodworking, fishing, gardening, bowling, hunting and golf. In his younger years, he played several sports and later he enjoyed coaching the winning Westinghouse basketball team. He was an avid reader, averaging five books a week until his death, as well as a Civil War history buff and an engaging conversationalist and story teller. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Milton, where he served in many capacities. He appreciated his many friends, including his Wednesday morning breakfast buddies, who met for 20-plus years.

Preceding him in death are his wife, Mary Ann and his sons, Bryce (on whose birthday he passed) and Brent; grandson, Chad Averitte and brother, Clayton Averitte.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Allison and Alex McCrory of Cantonment; granddaughter, Kendall McCrory of Tallahassee and grandsons, Troy Averitte of Navarre and Stephen McCrory of Boston. Also surviving him are his sister, Louise Hanlon of Cocoa Beach and brother, Robert Averitte of Greensboro, NC.

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 12, 2013, at Bayview Fisher-Pou Chapel with Reverend Frank Beall officiating.

Entombment was at Bayview Memorial Park with military honors.

Kim Sims

October 12, 2013

Mrs. Kim Sims, 41, passed away Friday, October 11, 2013, in Bratt.

Mrs. Sims was a native of Century, a former longtime resident of McDavid,  and had resided in Bratt  for the past 2 years. She was a school bus driver for Escambia County Florida Board of Education for 14 years and employee of Brewton Stockyard. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and aunt.

Survivors include her father and mother, James and Tiny Waters of Flomaton; husband  Greg Sims of Bratt; two sons, Dak Sims of Bratt and Jeremy Sims of Gainesville; one daughter, Haley Sims of Bratt; one brother, Jamie Waters of Flomaton; one sister, Ashley Waters of Flomaton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Dervin Spears officiating.

Burial will follow at the Godwin Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday, October 14, 2013, from 6:00 p.m. until funeral time at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Wayne Sims, Wes Sims, Josh Sims, Greg Therrell, Nathan Therrell and Sammy Portwood.

Berta Molly Carr

October 10, 2013

Berta Molly Carr 83, of Atmore, passed away October 8, 2013, at her residence. She was born July 25, 1931, in Perdido. She was a devoted member of Trinity Episcopal Church of Atmore and to her community. She was a volunteer with Covenant Hospice where she won an award for her service. Her mother, Gladys Vaughn Stacey, husband Charles H. Carr and her brother Joseph Flowers precede her in death. She was an assistant administrator at Oschner Clinic in New Orleans and was known for her gardening and floral designs.

She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Carr of Atmore; granddaughter, Gabrielle Anne; brothers, James (Pat) Flowers of Warren Robbins, GA, Frank (Pat) Flowers of Everett, WA; sister, Reevis Merritt of Atmore; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 12, 2013, at 2 p.m. from the Trinity Episcopal Church with Rev. Mark McDonald officiating.

Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Saturday, October 12, 2013, from 1 p.m. until service time at 2 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations to be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, 202 South Carney Street, Atmore, AL 36502.

Ruby Drew James

October 8, 2013

Ruby Drew James, 87 of Atmore, passed away Monday, October 7, 2013, in Atmore. She was a homemaker, born in Atmore on May 17, 1926, to the late Dewitt and Alvenia Green Drew. She was a member of the Pine Level Primitive Baptist Church of Atmore.

She was married to Harold James for 40 wonderful years, who precedes her in death. She also is preceded in death by four brothers, Charles Drew, Carl Drew, Gene Drew and Julian Drew; two sisters, Gladys Criswell Solomon and Liz Weaver.

Survivors include three daughters, Sandra (Gary) Hare of Atmore, Joan (Gerald) Malone of Bay Minette and Cathy (Steve) McKinley of Atmore; two sisters, Georgia Brooks of Atmore and Ann (Wayne) Sanders of Lawrenceville, GA; five grandchildren, Connie (Chris) Wilson; Jeff (Emily) Malone; Lisa (Brian) Wheatley; Jan (Adam) Smith and Vicki (Seth) Dettling; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be Wednesday October 09, 2013, at 11 a.m. from Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Grindle officiating. Music will be rendered by grandson Hunter Dettling and cousin Blake Presley.

Interment will follow in Pine Level Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Jeff Malone, Adam Smith, Dustin Wilson, Chuck Brooks, Will Malone, and Chris Wilson.

Honorary pallbearers are her caretakers, Stacy Stokes, Linda Peacock, Sharon Webb and Toni Boutwell.

Dennis George Westervelt

October 8, 2013

Dennis George Westervelt, 73 of Atmore, passed away Friday, October 4, 2013 in Atmore. He was a Kodak display organizer, born in Bronx, N.Y. on February 08, 1940, to the late Eugene George and Geneviève Pickard Westervelt. He served his country by serving in the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Rhodes Westervelt of Atmore; four daughters, Denise Eckdahl of Connecticut, Susan Hillie of New Jersey, Lisa Conner and Danielle Guinter both of Pennsylvania; and 10 grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Monday, October 07, 2013, in Judson Cemetery with military honors.

Interment was in Judson Cemetery.

Rachel Powell

October 8, 2013

Rachel Powell, 82, a native of Evergreen, AL and a longtime resident of Cantonment,  passed away October 15, 2013.

She had a green thumb for growing roses and gladiolas and enjoyed gardening very much. Mrs. Powell was an excellent cook, especially pecan pies, chicken and dumplings, apple tarts, and fried chicken. She was an avid student of the Bible and was a member of First Baptist Church Cantonment for more than 50 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, John Powell; son, Rodney Powell and six brothers. Survivors include her daughter, Beverly (Gary) Kubina; son, Jeffrey (Dianne) Powell; grandchildren: Michael, Makenna, and Matthew Powell; and brother, Roger (Hazel) Kearley; several nieces, nephews and many friends.

The family will receive friends Friday, October 18, 2013 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North in Cantonment. The funeral service will be conducted from the Chapel of Faith Chapel Funeral Home North at 7:30 pm.

Interment will be in Arkadelphia Cemetery in Evergreen, AL on Saturday, October 19, 2013, at 11 a.m.  Dr. Will Stone and Reverend. Larry Huff officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Emerald Coast Hospice or to Alzheimer’s Family Services.
