Rosie Cumbie Lassiter

Rosie Cumbie Lassiter,79 of Cantonment passed away Tuesday April 1, 2014, at her residence. She was a homemaker, born in Little River, Ala., on December 28, 1934, to the late Gulie and Lillyie Jeter Cumbie.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Bobby J. Lassiter.
Survivors include two sons, Darrell (Mary) Lassiter of Gulf Breeze and Jerald (Nora) Lassiter of Cantonment; four daughters, Patricia (Mark) Lockridge of Pensacola, Shelia(Frank) Champion of Uriah, Sandra (Alan) Milstead of McDavid and Cindy (Mike) Quint of Cantonment; 18 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services will be Friday, April 4, 2014, at 10 a.m. from Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mike Grindle officiating.
Interment will follow in McCullough Cemetery.
Family will receive friends on Thursday, April 3, 2014, at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home from 5:30 p.m. until 8 p.m.
The family would like to express a special thank you to Dr. Ibrahim and Covenant Hospice for the special care given their Mother.

Evelyn Carr Shiver

Evelyn Carr Shiver, age 95 of Cantonment, passed away on March 31, 2014. She was a former resident of Jay. She was a member of Cantonment First Baptist Church and retired from Harvesters Credit Union in Cantonment. Evelyn was a loving, caring and generous person. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Lola Carr; husband, Warren G. Shiver; one sister and four brothers.
She is survived by her son, Fred W. (Linda) Shiver; daughter, Wanda S. (Randy) Clark; sisters, Velma Bradley, Thelma Wilson, and Pamela Murphy; brother, Horace Carr; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2014, from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m. at Jay Funeral Home. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 pm.
Burial will follow at Cora Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family would like to thank Century Care Center and staff and Covenant Hospice for all their gentle love and support shown to our loved one.

Mr. Robert “Bobby” Helton, 76, passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2014. in Atmore.
Mr. Helton was a native and life long resident of Atmore. He attended the Brooks Memorial Baptist Church. His parents, Fonnie and Junie Helton and one sister, Ima Crawford precedes him in death.
He is survived by his two sons, Richard (Sherry) Helton of Semmes, AL, and Russell (Monica) Helton of Semmes; three brothers, Pete (Barbara) Helton of Atmore, , Clyde (Gladys) Helton of Atmore, and Kendrel (Nancy) Helton of Huntsville; two sisters, Leople Peacock of Montgomery and Nelda Jernigan of Montgomery; and two grandchildren, Arianna Helton and Shawn Brannan.
Funeral services will be Monday, March 31, 2014, at noon at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Heard officiating.
Burial will follow at the Robinsonville Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Monday, March 31, 2014, from 10 a.m. until service time at noon at the Petty- Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Michael Helton, Rodney Helton, Roger Helton, Allen Helton, Billy Sarr and Desmond Linam.
Vera Lloyd Jackson

Vera Lloyd Jackson, age 71 of Jay, went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 28, 2014. Vera was born March 10, 1943, in Century to Mildred and Adone Lloyd Sr. She has been a lifelong resident of Jay where she was a member of Cora Baptist Church. Vera was a business owner and operator at Jay hardware and Gift Shop for 35 years. She was a Jay Royals supporter in all sports, a sponsor too many little league teams and was a true Gator fan through the good times and bad.
She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 40 years, Aubrey Bryant Jackson; son, Eric Bryant Jackson, and her father, Adone Lloyd Senior.
She is survived by a son, Alan Brent (Angie) Jackson. She was deeply loved by her four grandchildren, Ali, Sissy, Brandy and Alan; her great-grandson, Jace; her mother, Mildred Powell; brother, Adone (Nancy) Lloyd; special nieces, Shannon Wright and Wendy (Scott) Blackmon; great-nephews, Jared Smith, AJ Nash, and Slater Nash and great-nieces, Olivia Wright and Zoe Wright who were also special to her; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Settle, and Eleanor Jackson; numerous cousins, relatives, and friends who will all miss her dearly.
A visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. at Jay Funeral Home on Sunday, March 30, 2014. Funeral services will begin at 3 p.m. with Rev. Earle Greene and Rev. LaDon Hall officiating services.
Burial will follow at Cora Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Scott Blackmon, Ricky Hendricks, Sandy Burkhead, David Bush, Jeff Boutwell, Zane Burkhead, and Jim Wolfe.

Billy Faye Smith

Billy Faye Smith, 76, of Jay, went to her Heavenly home on Saturday, March 29, 2014, at Jay Hospital. Billie Faye was born in Jay on March 22, 1938 to Andrew C. and Vassie (Cayley) Cannon. She was later blessed with a brother, John H. Cannon.
She grew up in church and gave her life to the Lord at an early age. She was a member of the Joy Circle for many years; she loved singing in the choir, and was a member of Beta Sigma Phi. She enjoyed teaching Sunday school, but especially loved bible school. She loved to dress-up and decorate her rooms to match the story of the day. Many children, who are now adults, still remember her teachings. Christ was always first in her life.
Billie Faye married her school sweetheart, Max Ray Smith on August 17, 1956. Their marriage was blessed with a son, Max Allen Smith and a daughter, Kelly Smith. Together they traveled the world spreading the word of Christ. They were married 57 years. She was a “clipper” of the newspaper. Recipes were her favorite, but anything that interested her was clipped and put in a box. Oh the box of clippings we have.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew (Vassie) Cannon and her brother, John H. Cannon.
Survivors include her husband, Max Ray Smith; son, Max Allen (Andrea) Smith; daughter, Kelly Renee Smith of Jay; nephew, John A. (Rhonda) Cannon and a great niece, Caren Alaine Cannon, who called her Nana, as well, of Walnut Hill; three grandchildren, Julie Anna (Ben) Adkinson, Holly Elizabeth (Trent) Ledbetter, and Janna Renee (Bryan) Ellis; six great-grandchildren, Annasyn Maleah and Olivia Faith Adkinson, Bella Elizabeth, Blane Trent, and Boone Cannon Ledbetter, and Hydie Raye Ellis, all of Jay.
A visitation will be held on Monday, March 31, 2014, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Jay Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Jay Funeral Home.
Burial will follow at Jay City Cemetery.

Preston Joiner

Mr. Preston Joiner, 77, passed away on Tuesday, March 25, 2014, in Rabun, Alabama.
Mr. Joiner was a native and lifelong resident of Rabun. Mr. Joiner was retired from Standard Furniture. A son, Bobo Joiner and a granddaughter, Sonya Tuberville precede him in death.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Clarice Johnson Joiner of Rabun; two sons, Danny Preston (Jackie) Joiner of Mobile and Allen Rockie (Ada) Joiner of Dyas, AL; two daughters, Bonnie (Earl) Tuberville of Rabun and Holly (Jeremy) Johnson of Rabun; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Saturday, March 29, 2014, at 2 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Sister Helen Stewart officiating.
Burial will follow at Dean’s Cemetery.

Mrs. Cassie Mae Wooten, 78, passed away on Tuesday, March 25, 2014, in Mobile.
Mrs. Wooten was a native of Brewton and a resident of Atmore for most of her life. Mrs. Wooten was owner of the Martinville Flea Market and was an avid fisherman. Her Husband, Buford F. Wooten; her parents, Drew and Catherine Moye; seven sisters; two brothers; and granddaughter, Halie Elizabeth Burkett precede her in death.
She is survived by her son, David (Janice) Coleman of Bratt; two stepsons, Larry (Connie) Wooten of Brewton and Joe Frank (Kay) Wooten of Bratt; three daughters, Sylvia (Joe) Gipson of Walnut Hill, Angela (Jimmy) Boatwright of Atmore and Lisa Chafin of Atmore; two stepdaughters, Brenda (Ron) Sessions of Stockton, AL and Connie (Billy) Dorriety of Atmore; two sisters, Pearl Martin and son, Andy of Canoe, AL and Ruth Bell of Atmore, AL; 14 grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren and four great-great granchildren.
Funeral services will be Thursday, March 27, 2014, at 10 a.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Joe Gipson and Rev. Ray McCullough officiating.
Burial will follow at the Oak Hill Cemetery.

Lowell C. Harms, 88 of Walnut Hill, passed away Monday March 24, 2014, in Atmore. He was a retired farmer, born in Michigan on February 17, 1926, to the late Harry and Gladys Caldwell Harms. He was a long standing member of the First Baptist Church of Atmore.
He is preceded in death by one brother, Marshall Harms and one sister, Phyllis Unruh Justus.
Survivors include his wife, Janis Elaine Wolfe of Walnut Hill; one son, David (Laureen) Harms of Stockton; one daughter, Sandra (Randall) Josey of Hammond, LA; two brothers, Don Harms and Dale Harms; three sisters, Thelma Boeckner, Dorothy Benner, and Ruth Benner; three grandchildren, Jennifer Harms Eslava, Ashley (Shannon) Josey and Justin (Angie) Josey; six great-grandchildren, Jillian Eslava, Jaden Eslava, Austin Josey, Starlynn Josey, Kaeli Josey, Madilyn Josey.
A Celebration of his life will be announced at a later date.
Mr. Harms wishes were that his remains be donated to The University of South Alabama Anatomical Gifts Program.
The family requests in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Atmore Community Hospital new x-ray fund.
Sofia L. Allison

Sofia L. Allison, 87, of Walnut Hill passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2014, in Pensacola. She was co-owner of Allison’s Grocery, born in Istanbul, Turkey on November 19, 1926, to the late Antoni and Anna Tharopulous Sekerouglu.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Ed Allison.
Survivors include one son, Alek Sandros Pengenika of Walnut Hill; one daughter, Yanula Cobbs of Pensacola; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be Monday, March 31, 2014, at 11 a.m. from the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Pensacola with Rev. Fr. Matthew Carter officiating.
Iinterment will follow in Walnut Hill Baptist Cemetery.
Family will receive friends Monday, March 31, 2014, at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Pensacola from 10 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m.

Dorothy Elaine Swanson

Dorothy was born in Reed City, Michigan in 1954, to Leo and Marie Kailing. She was a 1973 graduate of Reed City High School. As a Navy wife, Dorothy was the mainstay of the family while her husband was at sea. She enjoyed RV-ing with her husband, quilting, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Dorothy is survived by her husband Tim; daughters, Angela Huber (Tom), Jennifer Swanson, and Elizabeth Arnold (Matt). Surviving grandchildren are Tyler Swanson, Jacob, and Nikolaus Huber, Charlie, Cameron, Gabrielle, Daniel, and Chelsy Swanson, and Harper Arnold. Dorothy’s surviving siblings are Leo (Ruthann) Kailing, Theresa (Bob) Heminger, Cathy (Jim) Bellville, Evelyn Hare, and David (Sue) Kailing, all of Michigan; Louis Kailing, Vince (Phyllis) Kailing, Mike (Karen) Kailing, and Keith (Pam) Kailing, all of Florida; Rosie (George) Wolfe of Washington; Lois (Dale) Stover of Ohio; and Susie (Wes) Bellville of Indiana; as well as countless cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Leo John and Julia Marie Kailing; sister, Lucille Hunter; and brothers, Lawrence and Tom Kailing.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Children’s Ministry at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Pensacola, and the United Methodist Church Children’s Home in Montgomery, AL.
