Allen Charles Born, Jr.

Allen Charles Born, Jr., age 85, passed away Friday, January 30, 2015. Allen was born on October 6, 1929, in Pensacola and lived in the Ferry Pass area all his life. He retired from St. Regis Paper Company on August 1, 1985, after 37 years. He was a lifelong member of the Ferry Pass Church of Christ.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Allen C. Born, Sr. and Nellie Marguerite (Creighton) Born.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 64 years, Evelyn Louise “Momma” Born; his children, Allen III (Wanda), Karen (Chuck) Summers, James (Marie), Terry (Elizabeth), Daniel (Catherine), Stephen (Cynthia) and Cynthia (Glenn) Smith; 24 cherished grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Tuesday, February 3, 2015, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Faith Chapel North.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 4, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Faith Chapel North. Friends are welcome one hour prior to services.
Interment will follow at Whitmire Cemetery.
His grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Allen’s family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of Covenant Hospice (both outpatient and inpatient units) for their loving care and support.

Dudley “Bo” Steadham

Dudley “Bo” Steadham of McDavid was born November 28, 1931, and passed away January 31, 2015.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace and Della Steadham; his beloved wife of 49 years, Clara Bell,; brothers, Bob and Ben; and sister, Mattie Mae Driver.
He is survived by his sister, Margaret “Monk” Kimmons; sister-in-law, Dot Steadham; his sons, Jeff, Danny (Minner) and David (Linda); grandchildren Stephanie Nelson, Jeffery (Jill) Steadham, Ian Steadham, Danielle Steadham and Casey Burkett; and two great-grandchildren, Quinton and Cooper.
He passed away peacefully in his home Saturday morning. He loved his family. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family. He also enjoyed farming and his cows. He lived all of his life in McDavid. He retired after 42 years as a teamster truck driver.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, February 3, 2015, at 10 a.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Nathan Brown officiating.
Burial will follow at the Ray’s Chapel Cemetery.
Visitation was Monday, February 2, 2015, from 6-9 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Steve McCauley, Lee Jernigan, Bubba Kimmons, Jon Godwin, Wesley Morris and Robby Barrow.

Nadie Lee Campbell Griswold

Nadie Lee Campbell Griswold, age 91, passed to her heavenly home on January 27, 2015. She was born in Pensacola on February 16, 1923, to Bob and Sally Slade Campbell. She attended school at Pensacola Catholic until her middle teens when her family moved to Chumuckla, where she completed her schooling. Being widowed at age 50, she followed her dream of going to college and later retiring from the Santa Rosa County school system. She was a faithful member of Pine Level Baptist Church for 60 plus years.
Nadie is preceded in death by her husband, Jack Tony (J.T.) Griswold; their first born son, James Samuel Griswold; and her parents, Bob and Sally Campbell. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Edward (Buddy) Campbell, Ira (son) Campbell, and Franklin Campbell; sisters, Anna Elizabeth Campbell, Mildred Smith, and Willie Vera Spicer.
She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Linda (Paul) Council of Milton, Carolyn (Ronnie) Champion of Atmore; son and daughter-in-law, Tony (Tammy) Griswold of Jay; five grandchildren, Kimberly Council (Stevie) Fretwell of Jay, Joseph Council of Milton, Deidre Champion (Jimmy) Peak of Pace, Derek Champion of Florence, Mississippi and Kandace Griswold of Jay; eight great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Betty (Burt) Larson, Jewel Driskell, Lois Simmons, and Catherine Simmons, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Friday, January 30, 2015, at Pine Level Baptist Church in Jay with Chaplain Don Berry officiating.
Burial was at Pine Level Baptist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Roy Griswold, Ray White, Hunter Hughes, Stevie Fretwell, Jimmy Peck, and Derek Champion.

Jean Stallworth Maxwell

Jean Stallworth Maxwell, 86 of Atmore, passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at Spanish Fort. She was a homemaker born in Pine Apple, AL, on April 17, 1928, to Thomas Hugh and Julia Manar Stallworth. She was a graduate from Huntington College and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Atmore.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Benjamin C. Maxwell; daughter, Martha Ann Maxwell Allen; and sister, Barbara Stallworth King.
Survivors include her son, Benjamin “Bo” Collins Maxwell, Jr. of Atmore; one daughter, Mary Lynn Maxwell (Ronnie) Shirley of Tuscaloosa; one brother, Thomas Hugh Stallworth of Atmore; one sister, Julia Stallworth (Keith) King of Mobile; four grandchildren, Mary Ashley Allen, Hunter O’Neill Allen, Allison Shirley Verhine and Lindsey Elizabeth Shirley; and one great-grandchild, Robert James Verhine, Jr.
Services were held Friday, January 30, 2015, at the First United Methodist Church of Atmore with Rev. Debora Bishop officiating.
Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Sara Ann Ross, 58 of Milton, passed away on Monday, January 26, 2015.
Sara was born on October 5, 1956, on Pensacola, to the late John and Izetta Smith. She loved to read her Bible, sing, play the guitar,write music and poems, and fishing.
She is preceded in death by her parents.
Sara is survived by her husband, Joseph A. Ross, Sr.; two sons, Joseph A. Ross, Jr. and Jonathan A. Ross; four grandbabies that were the joy of her life, Clarissa, Taylor and Paisley Ross, and Bailee Simmons; two sisters, Brenda Arnett and Lynda Dansby; and numerous family members.
Sara was a mother to everyone and will be missed so very much.
Graveside services were held Friday, January 30, 2015, at Harvest Church Cemetery with Rev. Fred Stallworth officiating.

Vernon Wayne Davis

Mr. Vernon Wayne Davis, age 73, of Century, passed away on Friday, January 23, 2015, in Century. Mr. Davis was a native of Pensacola. He was a veteran of the United States Army where he served as Platoon Sergeant in Germany, served in the Florida National Guard, and also worked at the N.A.S. Pensacola in the Fabrication Department. At the time of his death he was working for the Pensacola News Journal. He was a member of Circle Baptist Church now known as New Beginnings Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Tonya; and his parents, Willie D and Eunice Davis.
He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Florence Stephens (Larry) of Pensacola; brother, David Davis (Janice) of Holt; one niece, Wendi Graham (Keith); four nephews, Chris Stephens, Jeff Stephens, Brian Davis and Robert Davis. He is also survived by stepson, John Lance; and four step-grandsons, as well as numerous great nephews.
Memories we have will fill our hearts with love, for his kindness and support he showed the ones he loved. He will be missed by many family members and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2015, at New Beginnings Baptist Church in Pensacola at 1 p.m. with Reverend Orville Pierce officiating.
Peter Joseph “Pete” Hensel, Jr.
January 28, 2015
Peter Joseph “Pete” Hensel, Jr., age 88, died peacefully at his Cantonment home on Monday, January 26, 2015. Pete grew up on his family’s dairy farm in Barrineau Park. He graduated from Tate High School in 1944 and immediately enlisted in the US Navy, telling friends he chose the Navy because he knew he’d always have warm food and a dry place to sleep. He served as an LST (Landing Ship Tank) driver delivering troops and equipment to beaches in the European-African-Middle East theaters of war.
After the war ended and Pete was being reassigned stateside, when asked by a geographically challenged officer what was the closest Navy base to Barrineau Park, he replied, “Miami, sir,” and finished his enlistment enjoying the Miami nightlife in his off duty hours. Pete then returned to the Panhandle where he tried the grocery business with his brother, Joe, at Hensel’s Market in Cantonment. But, the lure of better pay for less hours landed him a job at the St. Regis Paper Company mill in Cantonment. He started his 39-year career as a paper mill helper and retired as the Pulp Mill Superintendent. At the mill café, he met the love of his life, a dark-haired beauty from Pascagoula, Mississippi named Winnie to whom he was married for 67 years. Pete’s retirement included 4 loves: family, fishing, casino gambling and yard sales. He was a true “Mr. Fix-it” able to repair almost anything and even built his house on Highway 29 from the ground up. While his ability with a fly rod was legendary, his winning at the slots was not so much. He had better luck catching mullet and blue crab off the pier at “Hensel’s Hideaway” on Ward Basin in Milton.
Pete is survived by his wife Winifred and four children, Carol Elaine Moore (Joe), Randall Joseph Hensel, Sr. (Sharon), Gary Wayne Hensel (Donna), and Mark Edward Hensel. Pete survived his siblings, Mary Hensel Ging, Joseph Peter Hensel, and Frank Joseph Hensel. He leaves behind multiple nieces and nephews as well as six grandchildren, Stacey, Taylor, Ross, and Joseph Hensel, Cary and Casey Moore; and one great-grandchild: Tyler Retzer.
The family wishes to thank his caregivers Tammy, Tami, Gloria, and Belinda along with Emerald Coast Hospice nurses and aides for their loving care and support for the last 18 months, especially our angels, Brenda, Sherri and Ms. Evelyn.
Funeral services will be held at Faith Chapel North on Saturday, January 31, 2015, with visitation from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. immediately followed by a memorial service.
The funeral procession will then leave for St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Barrineau Park.

Mrs. Betty Sue Chandler, 77, passed away Sunday, January 25, 2015, in Gardendale, Alabama.
Mrs. Chandler was a native of Elba, Alabama, former resident of Atmore (for 25 years) and a resident of Falkville, AL. She was very involved in the March of Dimes and served as a greeter at K-Mart. She attended the Presley Street Baptist Church and Atmore Baptist Temple. She is preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Dykes Chandler; daughter, Debbie Roberts; and grandson, Christopher Middleton.
Survivors include her two sons, Gary (Leslie) Chandler of Lumberton, NC and Randy (Joan) Chandler of Brandon, MS; two daughters, Denise Middleton of Atmore and Donna (Thomas) Roberts of Falkville, AL; brother-in-law, Joe Roberts of Collierville, TN; one sister, Linda (Cabert) Mills of Elba, AL; 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 29, 2015, at 10 a.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Doug Odom officiating.
Burial will follow at the Oak Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 28, 2015, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

David W. Fortner, 84 of Pensacola, FL passed away on Sunday, January 25, 2015.
He served his country in the Marine Corps and retired after 30 years of service as an Aviation Photo Electric Systems Chief. His hobbies included bowling, photography, computers, electronics, cinema and reading. David loved spending time with his family the most.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Emma Lois Fortner; and uncle, William Arthur Fortner, Jr.
David is survived by his three daughters, Barbara (David) Davenport, Sherri (Karl) Zehr and Wanda (Johnnie) Tyus; eight grandchildren, David “Buster” Davenport, Jr., Rebecca “Becky” Davenport, Meghan “Meggie” Zehr, Korey “KP” Zehr, Shelby “Cooter” Tyus, Chase “Boo Boo” Tyus, Alexis Tyus and Bridget Tyus; honorary grandson, Jim Orunmbe; and six great-grandchildren, Teven Zehr, Tatum Berry, Trinity Rhynard, Autumn Rhynard, Joey Fisher and McKinley Fisher.
Graveside services will be held at 10:15 a.m. on Friday, January 30, 2015, at Barrancas National Cemetery Shelter A.

Raymond Randolph Watts, 84 of Cantonment, passed away on Saturday, January 24, 2015. Randy was born in Evergreen, AL to the late David R. and Lillian N. Watts. He served in the U.S. Army. He worked at and retired from Monsanto after 31 years. He was a member of the Masons Lodge #322, former Shriner member and a member of Olive Baptist Church, serving as an usher. He also loved to fish, watch Nascar and was an avid Alabama football fan.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Hawkins Watts; his parents; brothers, Donald, Charles, and David B. Watts; and sisters, Grace Hall and Gwen Griffin.
Randy is survived by his daughters, Robin (William) DeCoux, Dnene (Keith) Johnson, Teresa (Dale) Biery and Ramona (Clay) McConell; son, Michael (Jane) Hawkins; sister, Minta Eddins; brothers, McFarlan and Lavon Watts; 10grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North with Pastor Stan Lewis and Pastor Mike Hawkins officiating.
Burial will follow in Pensacola Memorial Park Cemetery.
