George Vernon Hallford

Mr. George Vernon Hallford, 53, passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2015, in Pascagoula, Mississippi.
Mr. Hallford was a native of Mobile and a resident of Flomaton for the past 24 years. Mr. Hallford was a member of the Local 568, loved his family, loved to hunt and fish. He was a member of the New Life Church of Atmore. His son, George Caleb Hallford, precedes him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra Howell Hallford of Flomaton; one daughter, Mallory “BabyGirl” Hallford of Flomaton; and three sisters, Diane Mason of Pensacola, Marelle Jackson of Brewton, and Paula Billingsley of Brewton.
Funeral services will be Saturday, May 30, 2015, at 2 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Justin Morse officiating.
Burial will follow at the Lambeth-Boutwell Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday, May 29, 2015, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Will Chavers, Paul Howell, Ethan Howell, Joey Croley, Marshall Mason, Hollis Hallford, Danny Hallford and David Baggett.

Dixie Carole DeWeese Carlton

Dixie Carole DeWeese Carlton, 78, died May 24, 2015, after a long illness. She was born October 30, 1936, in Taylorville, IL, to the late Forest and Wilma DeWeese.
She, her husband, and family sold their farm and dairy in Illinois and moved to Jay in 1962 where they purchased the Ted May Farm/Dairy and became active members of the Jay community. She was a long time member of the Joy Circle and the choir at Jay United Methodist Church. Dixie enjoyed crafts of all types, but was especially fond of quilting and was a member of several quilting guilds. Dixie and her husband moved to Jacksonville in 2010 to be closer to the grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Richard H. Carlton; son, Mark Carlton (Dawn) of Gainesville, FL; daughter, Anneliese Robbins (Alan) of Jacksonville; grandchildren, Drew Carlton, Alex and Ashton Robbins; one sister, Thelia Ann Anastasia (Fran) of Champaign, IL; one brother, Eric DeWeese (Chris) Los Angeles, CA; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 30, 2015, at Jay United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Fellowship and visitation to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jay United Methodist Church or Highlands United Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville, FL.
William “Wilson” Morris

Wilson was born January 18, 1931, in Jay. On May 25, 2015, after a long hard battle with cancer, he went home to be with the Lord. Wilson retired from Chemstrand/Monsanto after 30 years. He was a wonderful husband, daddy, and pa-pa. He loved his fishing and being a master gardener.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Myrtle Morris; son, Ronnie and special daughter-in-law Cathy; daughter, Rhonda (Ronnie) Brannon; two special sisters, Wavolene Kelly and Mary (Bob) Taggart; grandchildren, Chandra (Tim) Rigby, Mike (Shanna) Morris and Jeff (Yajaira) Morris; five step-grandchildren, Danae, Chris, Crystal, Marcus and Genia; 13 great-grandchildren, Tori, Taylor, Hunter, Jenna, Jared, Kiana, Annalyssee, Landon, Berkley, Zachry, Tristin, McKenna, and Jacob and two special great-great-grandchildren, Keaton and Emersyn. Wilson was preceded in death by his parents, Lottie and Lee Morris; stepfather, Willie Dykes and two brothers, Ezra and Archie Morris.
The family will receive friends from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. on Friday, May 29,2015, at Cora Baptist Church. Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. with Rev. LaDon Hall and Bro. Bobby Carnley officiating.
Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be grandsons, Mike, Jeff, Hunter and Tim and very special friends Ray Morris and Glenn Gavin. The family would like to give a special thanks to Covenant Hospice. We Love You Daddy!

Christa E. “Oma” Davis

Christa E. “Oma” Davis, 79 of Cantonment, passed away on Friday, May 23, 2015. She was born in Germany and immigrated to the states in 1955. She received her citizenship just two years later. She was a past member of the Eastern Star.
Mrs. Davis is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Anna Marie Mansbarth; and her brother, Norbert Mansbarth.
She is survived by her husband of almost 60 years, Otis E. Davis; three children, Gerlinder (Rickey) Smith, Monica (Mike) Mackey, and Otis E. (Peggy) Davis, Jr.; six grandchildren, Tabatha, Christina, Regina, Michael, Curtis, and Daniel; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, 2015, at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North.
Burial will follow in Barrancas National Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at 11 a.m. prior to services.
Pallbearers will be Provost Guard of the Hadji Shrine Temple.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Children’s Transportation Fund at Hadji Shrine Temple.
Barbara Woodward Haley

Barbara Woodward Haley of Atmore went to her eternal home on May 26, 2015, after a lengthy illness. Barbara was born February 11, 1926, to Grover W. and Leah C. Woodward in Chapman, AL. She spent most of her youth in Greenville and Bay Minette, AL where her father was the L&N Station Master. Barbara graduated in 1945 from Baldwin County High School where she was a cheerleader and soprano in the Glee Club. During World War ll, Barbara was employed as a chauffeur for the military officers traveling to the Grand Hotel in Point Clear for R&R. After the war ended, she worked for the State Employment Service finding work and obtaining benefits for veterans.
In 1949, at a dance at the Atmore Country Club, she met the love of her life, Ben Haley, a Marine who had recently returned to the area. A whirlwind romance followed and in December of 1950, the two renowned dancers became dance partners for life. They made their home in Atmore, where they both became involved with their church, community, and friends.
When God blessed the couple with two daughters, Barbara retired from professional life and devoted herself full-time to her family. Being a mother was the job in which Barbara truly excelled and loved the most. She was a room mother every year that each of her daughters attended Rachel Patterson School. She was a Girl Scout leader, Girl’s Auxiliary leader, Vacation Bible School and Sunday School teacher, and chaperone for countless dances, parties, and class trips. She and Ben took a multitude of children to the beach each summer where they taught them to water ski and drive a jeep on the beach. Barbara was president of the PTA, president of the Atmore Study Club, a Pink Lady at the Atmore Community Hospital, and hostess for numerous parties and backyard bar-b-ques. She was a devoted daughter and daughter-in-law, giving compassionate care to her parents and mother-in-law until their deaths. In addition to her church and community work and commitment to family and friends, Barbara will be remembered for starting the Atmore Nursing Center Beauty Salon Ministry. She continued to volunteer and minister to the elderly there for over 40 years.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Ben L. Haley of Atmore; her parents, G.W. Woodward and Leah C. Woodward; and her sisters, Lavida Woodward and Marie Woodward Vines, all of Bay Minette.
She is survived by her daughters, Rhonda Haley (Ike) Scott of Opelika and Kathleen Haley (AI) Thompson of Point Clear; her granddaughters, Haley Caroline Scott of Auburn and Amory Ellen Scott of Atlanta, GA; her nieces, Tonya Vines Harang of Spanish Fort and Katrina Vines Duck of Bay Minette; her beloved Boston Terrier, Chloe; and a host of extended family and friends.
The visitation for Barbara will be at noon on Thursday, May 28,2015, followed by the memorial service at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Atmore.
Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Atmore.
Memorial gifts in Barbara’s memory can be made to the Atmore Nursing Center Beauty Salon Ministry, the First Baptist Church of Atmore, or the Atmore Animal Shelter.

Martha Kirkland Brown

Martha Kirkland Brown passed away on May 22, 2015 in Madisonville, LA. She was born on August 1, 1951, in Carriere, MS, to the late Houston Thomas Kirkland and Golda Pearson Kirkland.
Martha was married to her beloved husband, Dennis Ray Brown, for 40 years and together they had two sons, Jeremy Brown (Kelli), of Petal, MS, and Josh Brown (Jessika), of Pensacola. She was the loving grandmother of Logan, Lukas, Lexington and Brett Brown. She was the sister of Mary Burchfield (Mack), Margaret Wedgeworth (Robert), Patricia Miles (Terry), Janice Martin (Oliver), Richard Kirkland (Karen), Terry Kirkland (Suzanne), Pam Aultman (Mike), the late Charles Kirkland and Tommy Kirkland. She was the life of every family gathering and the best story teller of the group. Her husband and sons treasured her, her grandsons adored her, and her siblings, and multiple nieces and nephews will miss her greatly.
Martha resided in Century, where her husband is the pastor of Oak Grove Baptist Church. She has faithfully served the Lord alongside her husband in churches in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. In addition to supporting her husband’s ministry, she led countless Sunday school classes, directed Vacation Bible Schools, led Bible study groups for women, and organized and led numerous women’s retreats. Her relationship with Jesus Christ was demonstrated through her devotion to her family and her friends and her desire for others to know him. All who met her recognized the joy she carried by the contagious smile, constant encouragement, and her positive attitude. She loved people wholeheartedly and spoke unashamedly about her desire to love Christ more.
Martha Kirkland Brown was a Godly example of wife, mother, MawMaw, sister, aunt, and friend. She lived and loved well. Those who care for her will “honor her for all that her hands have done” (Proverbs 31:31).
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Service to celebrate this beautiful life at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at Bedico Baptist Church,, Ponchatoula, LA . A wake will be held on Monday, May 25, 2015, at the church from 6-9 p.m.. Visitation on Tuesday, May 26, 2015, will be from 10 a.m. until service time. Interment will be at 3:00 p.m. at the West Union Baptist Church Cemetery, Carriere, MS.
Naoma Louise Hullett

Naoma Louise Hullett, age 92 of Jay, passed away on May 22, 2015. She was a member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church. Louise attended Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee where she earned her Master’s Degree in education. She received several recognitions during her teaching career including Santa Rosa County Teacher of The Year. Louise enjoyed painting and gardening.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William Joel Hullett and Edna Asseneth Hullett; sisters, Mary Ohrbom and Ruth Hullett; and brothers, Joel T. Hullett and John David Hullett Sr.
Louise is survived by her sister, Anna Hullett Almer; special sister-in-law, Annie Merle Hullett and numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 26, 2015, from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. at Jay Funeral Home. Funeral services will begin at 3 pm. with Dr. Lenny Howard officiating services.
Burial will follow at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Nell Elizabeth Lane Hendricks

Nell Elizabeth Lane Hendricks, age 45, passed away on Thursday, May 21, 2015, after a lengthy illness. She was a lifetime resident of Jay. She was born on March 12, 1970, in Milton to Irene and Kenneth G. Lane. Nell was married for 27 years to her beloved husband, Howard Hendricks. Nell attended school at Jay, PJC, and Locklin VoTech where she earned her degrees in Early Childhood Education. Nell loved working with children and enjoyed her job at Training Wheels Preschool where she taught Pre-K. Nell enjoyed reading and spending time with friends and family. She was an active member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church.
Nell is survived by her husband, Howard D. Hendricks, and Riley Cooper her beloved pet. She is also survived by siblings, Jimmy (Janice) Everage, Joseph D. Everage, Elaine Shamloo, Sandy (Reid) Paronto and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her mother, father, and sister, Teresa Shirley.
A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Monday, May 25, 2015, at the Temporary Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church located at 4003 Highway 4. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. with Brother Lenny Howard officiating service.
Burial will follow at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Kim Vansant

Kim Vansant, born May 20,1958, was a loving mother to Sandy Rainwater and partner in life with Gary Rainwater.
After serving her community in Rome, GA for many years as a nurse she moved to Christian Home, FL and spent her days serving her family and raising her daughter, of whom she was extremely proud. Watching Nascar races and working to support Northview High School filled Kim’s days with excitement. Marveling at her talented daughter twirling flaming batons filled many Friday nights while she waited on the sidelines eager to douse the flame.
Her own flame diminished too quickly on May 18,2015, for those that loved her, but the residual heat from her loving nature will be felt for years to come. A woman who valued friends and family, she was loved by many and will be truly missed.
Kim is survived by her daughter, Sandy Rainwater and life partner, Gary Rainwater; brothers, Tony and Mark Vansant; and a slew of nieces and nephews.
Kim was proceeded in death by her brother, Jerry Vansant, along with her parents.
A service celebrating Kim’s life will be held Saturday, May 23, 2015 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Bratt.

Jeffrey L. Slade, age 53, of Jay, passed away on May 19, 2015, after a lengthy illness. He was a member of Jay United Methodist Church and was very active in church fellowship and activities. He was a loving husband, father, brother, and friend to those he met.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John Rupert and Marlene Slade.
Jeffrey is survived by his wife of 29 years, Marybeth Slade; daughters, Ashley Slade, Trinity Slade, and Linda Slade; brothers, Randy (Michelle) Slade and Gary Slade; father-in-law, Wallace Diamond; brother-in-law, Ed (Margaret) Diamond; sister-in-law, Amanda (Douglas) Ard; niece, Kristen Slade; two nephews, Cory Slade and Will Diamond; and close friends we consider as family, Wanda and Billy Boutwell and Johnny and Beverly Johnson.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, May 24, 2015, from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. at Jay United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will begin at 3 p.m. with Pastor Ebb Hagen and Pastor Laura Weant officiating.
