Cheryl Sue Fleming Halfacre

Cheryl Sue Fleming Halfacre, age 66 of Milton, passed away Sunday, February 14, 2016, after a long battle with cancer. Cheryl enjoyed spending time with her family, camping and fishing. She was an animal lover, especially her cherished companion, Charlie. She loved Tennessee, especially “Dollywood”.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Leroy and Mamie Fleming; sister, Carol Smith; brother, Billy Joe Fleming; and her niece, Pamela Argeris.

She is survived by her loving husband, Raymond E. Halfacre; daughters, Lisa Michelle Lee (Tyler) and Kim Andrews; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and her sister, Pat Sumlin (James).

The family would like to express a very special thank you to the nurses at Covenant Hospice.

Pallbearers will be Albert Hanners, Doyle Ellis, Johnathon Argeris, Todd Winans, Terry Brown and Bo Brown.

Honorary pallbearers will be Nikolas Argeris and Brennon Lee.

Visitation will be Thursday, February 18, 2016, at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North at 12 p.m. with the funeral services beginning at 1 p.m.

Interment will follow at Spruell Cemetery.

Robert Alexander Gordon, Jr.

Mr. Robert Alexander Gordon, Jr., 71, passed away on Wednesday, February 10, 2016, in Daphne.

Mr. Gordon was a native of Atmore, former resident of Montgomery and Mobile, AL and had resided in Daphne for the past 31 years. Mr. Gordon was always involved in politics and he was a political advisor to Gov. Albert Brewer and other state politicians in Alabama. He was the editor of Alabama Forest Products Magazine and increased it membership. He was well known for his photographic memory. He never met a stranger. He was manager of Belmany Funeral Home, which was his last career. He was a member of the Carney Lodge 549 and Scottish Rite Abba Shrine. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Miriam Gordon.

He is survived by his brother, William Byard (Susie) Gordon, Sr. of Pensacola; two sisters, Meg Gordon (Bob) Jones of Atmore and Kaki Gordon (Todd) Russell of St. Petersburg, FL; six nieces and nephews; four great-nieces and nephews; and one aunt, Therese Keller Roberts of Miflin, AL.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 13, 2016, at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Dr. Debora Bishop officiating.

Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were his nephews, Yancey Lee Gordon, Robert Murphy Gordon, Alexander Laird Jones, and his classmates, Jackie Helton, Ronnie Horn, Harry Davis, Bob Jones and Jimmy McNeal.

Honorary pallbearers will be Marvin Rischer and Wayne Rischer.

John Alex Wells, Jr.

John Alex Wells, Jr. 79, of Pensacola, passed away Tuesday, February 9, 2016. John left his earthly life in the arms of his loving wife of 58 years, Opal Jeanette Wells. The two of them shared a love that few of us will ever experience and so many desire.

He graduated from Vernon High School, then served his country in the Army National Guard and U.S. Army. John retired after 35 years of service from Southern Bell and served as a Deacon at Pleasant Home Primitive Baptist Church. He enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, fishing and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was an example to his grandchildren, a loving husband, great father and awesome grandfather.

He is preceded in death by his father, John Alex Wells, Sr.; mother, Arleva Cook Wells; brothers, Lee Wells, Parker Wells, and Harrell Wells; sisters, Arkie Revell, Wilma Stubbs and Mary Perdue.

He is survived by his loving wife, Opal Jeanette Wells; son, Kevin Wells (Debbie); grandsons, Hunter Wells and Colby Wells; special niece who was like a granddaughter, Raeanne Loyed; brothers, Rufus Wells, Carlton Wells (Ann) and Joel Wells (Wanda); sisters, Imogene Birge and Anna Lou Richards (Herman); brother-in-law, Randy Shields (Sarah); sisters-in-law, Juliette Amandalole (Bill) and Annette Lawrence (Randy).

Pallbearers were Hunter Wells, Colby Wells, Joey Peterson, Scott Shields, Randy Lawrence and Dennis Purdue.

The family would like to thank Dr. Robert Rush Brown, Covenant Care, Cathy, Karen and Eugina, Olivia Barber and his favorite therapist, Marsha Cook.

Dad is finally resting peacefully in the arms of his Heavenly Father.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 13, 2016, at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North with Elder Ed Morgan, Elder David Johnson and Elder Bobby Willis officiating.

Interment was at Pensacola Memorial Gardens.

James Edward Byrd of Molino, passed away at the age of 67 on Wednesday, February 10, 2016.

James is survived by his wife, Brenda Byrd; his five children; one brother; four sisters; 18 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Billy Don Brooks, age 68, of Cantonment, passed away Thursday, February 11, 2016. He was known as an avid horseman and fisherman. Billy enjoyed farming and boating with his family.

He is preceded in death by his son, Donald Brooks; grandson, Billy Joe Brooks and his father, Pa Heart.

Billy is survived by his cherished wife Lessie; daughter Cherie (Michael) Rayborn of Lakeland; son, Daniel (Tasha) Brooks and his son, Roger (Sandie) Hays; grandchildren, Billy Brooks, Shawn Brooks, Harlie Rayborn of Lakeland, Rileigh Rayborn of Lakeland, Baylee Rayborn of Lakeland, FL, Donald Brooks and Shawn Brooks; great-grandchildren, Dallas Brooks, Oakley Brooks and Zane Brooks.

A celebration of Billy’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, February 15, 2016, at Becks Lake Fish Camp, 2020 Becks Lake Road in Cantonment.

Larry “Ricky” Dale Irwin, age 66, passed away Monday, February 8, 2016, in Jay. He was a native of Atmore, former long-time resident of Bratt, and had resided in Century since 2010. He was retired from Century Correctional Institute. He was the former minister of music and was a member of the Bratt First Baptist church.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Gwendolyn Albritton Irwin, and his father, Harold Irwin

Mr. Irwin is survived by his wife, Reita Wearren Irwin of Century; brother, Ray Hall of Atmore; and niece, Shannon Hall-Jones.

Funeral services were held Thursday, February 11, 2016, at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Delbert Redditt officiating.

Burial followed at Godwin Cemetery.

Joyce Marie Johnson Akins

Mrs. Joyce Marie Johnson Akins, 77, passed away on Saturday, February 6, 2016, in Booneville.

Mrs. Akins was a native of Goodway and a resident of Booneville since 1975. Mrs. Akins was a former employee of Judy Bond, and manager of the lunch room and bus driver at Escambia Academy. She was a member of the Atmore Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She is preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Jack Akins, Sr.

Survivors include her two sons, Harry (Judy) Akins of Goodway and Jack Anderson “Andy” (Amy) Akins of McCullough; one daughter, Suzanne Akins of Booneville; two brothers, Dean Johnson of Goodway and Joseph Johnson of Meridian, MS; three sisters, Helen Eady of Warner Robins, GA, Colleen Maddox of Montgomery and Sarah Smith of Goodway; and six grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Friday, February 12, 2016, at 11 a.m. at the Lindsey Cemetery with Patriarch Joseph Johnson officiating.

Vernon Burl Vinson

Vernon Burl Vinson, 87, passed away on February 6, 2016, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was a devoted husband and father who will be deeply missed.

Vernon was a Pensacola native. He was retired from Pensacola Naval Air Station. He was a member of the Pensacola Camellia Club and an active member of Presley Street Baptist Church in Atmore.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Jean; sons, David (Islamorada, FL), and Danny and daughter in law, Jessica; grandchildren, Ian, Ansis and Sophia (Raleigh, NC).

The family would like to thank the ladies at Southern Care Hospice Services in Atmore for their compassionate care.

Graveside services were held Tuesday, February 9, 2016, from the Oak Hill Cemetery in Atmore with Rev. Mike Grindle conducting services.

Shirley Elaine Brewton

Shirley Elaine Brewton, 65 of Atmore, passed away Monday, February 8, 2016, in Pensacola. She was a hairdresser. She was born in Atmore on August 2, 1950, to the late Alvin and Laverne Flowers Conway.

She was a member of Huxford Baptist Church. She taught cosmetology at Reid State. After Reid State she opened her business, A Cut Above, in McCullough.

She is preceded in death by a daughter, Marcie Michelle Brewton.

Survivors include husband, John Brewton of Atmore; one son, Ken (Jennifer) Brewton of Pineview, AL; one daughter, Lynn (Arron) Rhodes of Stockton; one brother, Don Conway of Poarch; one sister, Earline (Gilbert) Wall of McCullough; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services were Thursday, February 11, 2016, at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Ron McGhee.

Interment was in Huxford Baptist Church Cemetery.

Jimmie William Kite

Jimmie William Kite went to be with his Lord and Savior on February 4, 2016, unexpectedly. He was born June 4, 1939, in Pensacola. He began his love of farming as an employee of Foster’s Dairy at age 15. He married the love of his life of 56 years Barbara Ann Driver Kite in 1959. He was a welder/pipefitter by trade for more than 20 years. Because retirement wasn’t in his vocabulary, farming became his passion. His love for farming was a source of pride and livelihood he passed down to his children and his grandchildren.

The most memorable years of his life were spending time with his boys and his grandchildren. He enjoyed coon hunting, fishing, and watching his boys ride racehorses. As his  grandchildren came along they provided many memories that were a source of pride and joy for him daily. There was no lack of personality for this Daddy and Pawpaw. For all that knew him, his animated spirit will never be forgotten.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Helen Garrett Kite Glidden and Rufus Kite; four siblings; and his first grandson, Bryant Carlton Kite.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Ann Driver Kite, three sons; Dale (Sharon) Kite, Joey (Brenda) Kite, and Darrell (Sherri) Kite; and one brother, Howard Kite; grandchildren, Kristina Bovia (expecting Jimmie’s first great grandchild, Roxanne), Heather Winfree, Justin Kite, Hunter Kite, and Cody Kite.

Pallbearers will be Dale Kite, Joey Kite, Darrell Kite, Justin Kite, Cody Kite, and Hunter Kite.

Honorary pallbearers will be Pat Kelly, Mike Kelly, JR Miller, Trey Bovia, Bryan Winfree, Charles Jones, Bruce Lee, Randy Weaver and Shane Gibson.

Visitation will be held at Victory Assembly of God on Tuesday February 9, 2016, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. with funeral services to immediately follow.

Interment will be held at Highland Baptist Church.

Eastern Gate Memorial Gardens will be in charge of arrangements.
