Melvin Carlos Hawthorne

Melvin Carlos Hawthorne, age 63 of Jay, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 28, 2016. He retired from CSX Transportation. He had a love for fishing and spending time with his family and friends. He loved to sing, play the guitar, and watch classic movies. He also loved to watch his grandchildren play ball. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Melvin G. and Gussie Hawthorne; and stepson, Lee Thompson.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Debbie Hawthorne; daughters, Carlienne (Greg) Enfinger, Amanda (Josh) Kimmons, Denise (Alec) Dobson, and Misty (Bobby) Williamson; sisters, Betty Clark, Lorene Beal, Christine Ashcraft, Darlene (Richard) Caldwell, and Rena (Mike) Gandy; brothers, Earnest Preston (Sue) Hawthorne and Calvin (Cindy) Hawthorne; 15  grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 1, 2016, at 2 p.m. at Jay Funeral Home with Bro. Earle Greene and Bro. Frederick Barrow officiating.

Active pallbearers will be his nephews, Timothy Clark, Johnny Hawthorne, David Wilson, Shane Dunsford, Michael Beal, and great-nephew, Travis Ashcraft.

Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Lunsford, Doug “Sonny” Franklin and Johnny Odom

Sylvia Julia Hall Johnson

Sylvia Julia Hall Johnson, age 86, of Cantonment, passed away Wednesday, April 27, 2016. She was born in Atmore on December 29, 1929, to Martin and Katie Hall. Sylvia was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Oak Grove. She was an avid traveler, traveling all over the U.S. with her husband in their fifth wheel. She loved to fish, garden, crochet, knit and quilt.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 38 years, Winfred C. Johnson; her daughter, Marsha Lugg; and her sister, Martiz Rutherford.

She is survived by her daughters, Judith Ann Helton and Donna Nell Mack; stepchildren, Curtis Johnson (Sandy), Renee Bain (Jerry), Zeida Houston (Pete), and Zilpah Sammarco; sisters, Jackie Brown of Bratt, Betty Well of Oak Grove, and Jerry Hall, of Walnut Hill. She is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren and 16 step-great-grandchildren.

The family would like to offer special thanks to Arcadia Health Center and Emerald Coast Hospice.

Services will be held at Pensacola Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, May 3, 2016, with a visitation from 10 a.m. until funeral services begin at 11 a.m.

Interment will follow in Pensacola Memorial Gardens.

Sam Uebelsteadt

The racing community has lost one of their pioneers, Sam Uebelsteadt, 89, of Cantonment, who passed away Thursday, April 28, 2016. He was a successful car owner for two decades at Five Flags Speedway. His #12 Bobby Allison look alike cars were a fan favorite. He will be greatly missed.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Nell Uebelsteadt.

He is survived by his daughters, Linda Burkett (Jerry) and Joy Tomkins (Rick); sons, Paul Uebelsteadt (Marcia) and Gus Uebelsteadt (Susan); nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 3, 2016, at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 4, 2016, at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North at 10 a.m.

Interment will follow at Jordan Cemetery.

Royce Franklin Beasley

Bro. Royce Franklin Beasley, age 61, of Travis Road in Brewton, passed away Thursday, April 28, 2016, in a local hospital after a brief illness. He was a native and long time resident of Brewton and a former resident of Georgia before moving back to Brewton in 2003. Bro. Beasley was a faithful member of the Ridge Road Baptist Church and a former employee of T.R. Miller Mill Company with a number of years of service. He was the former Pastor of the Grace Baptist Church in East Brewton and he ministered weekly at a local nursing facility and other assisted living facilities. He loved and enjoyed the outdoors.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Wilson Beasley of Brewton; one son, Riley (Friend-Katie Glenn) Beasley of Flomaton; one daughter, Nicole Jordan of Brewton; two brothers, Russell (Gerald) Beasley of Wallace, AL  and Ronald (Teresa) Beasley of Callahan, FL; three sisters, Janice Beasley of Brewton, Sue (Lavon) Hodge of Brewton and Phillys (Earl) Fuqua of Brewton;
five grandchildren, Caleb Beasley, Madison Trehern, Jaxon Jordan, Joseph Glenn, John Glenn; and faithful dogs, Maggie and Jack.

Visitation will be held Monday, May 2, 2016, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Ridge Road Baptist Church in Brewton.

Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday morning May 3, 2016, at 10 a.m. at the Ridge Road Baptist Church with Bro. Lee Cadenhead officiating.

Interment with will follow in Cooper Cemetery in Brewton.

Lloyd Wilbur Barry, Jr.

Lloyd Wilbur Barry, Jr. of Pensacola joined his previously passed loved ones on April 19, 2016. He was a devoted husband to Patricia and father to Linda (Stephen), David (Roni) and Steven (Ellen). He will be greatly missed by them, his five grandchildren, Keith (Kasey), Tyler, Erica (David), Trevor and Sloane; two sisters, Helen and Jackie; and brother-in-heart, James.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd; mother, Grace; sister, Frances; daughter, Sharon; and granddaughter, Sheila.

He was born in Brooker, FL on March 29, 1940. Wilbur was raised on a farm with no name, as he always liked to call it. He was an All-State football player for Bradford County High School and graduated in 1958. He was awarded an academic scholarship to the University of Florida and married that same year. Wilbur later earned his B.A. in accounting. During that time, he also served America as a member of the Army National Guard.

He made Pensacola his home in 1978 and soon opened Smokey’s Real Pit Bar-B-Que on Highway 29 where he cultivated a second family. Table D6 at lunchtime will never be the same.

All who knew him knew Wilbur to be an enthusiastic Gators sports fan. He loved classic country music and often traveled to Nashville to support rising musicians in their endeavors. He also donated generously to local causes.

A memorial service was held at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North on Highway 29 at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 25, 2016.

A graveside service will be held near Gainesville, FL on a later date.

Terry Lee Davis

Mr. Terry Lee Davis, 63, passed away on Thursday, April 21, 2016, in Bratt.

Mr. Davis was a native and lifelong resident of Bratt. He is preceded in death by his wife, Debra Davis; parents, Robert Lee and Christine Davis; brother, Johnny Davis; sister, Liz Johnson; and grandson, Chance Mosley.

He is survived by his two daughters, Teresa Davis of Century and Terri Leanne Stabler of Atmore; one sister, Sandra (Van) Johnson of Nokomis (FL); and 10 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 22, 2016, at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Clarence Rolin officiating.

Burial was at the Godwin Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Terri Leanne Stabler, Lance Bethea, James Johnson, Van Johnson, Austin Mosley and Johnny Hadley.

Dorothy Harr

Dorothy Harr, 69, of Milton, passed away Saturday, April 23, 2016, with her immediate family at her bedside. She was a native of Pensacola. Dorothy was a loving wife and devoted mother of three children.

She is survived by her daughter, Tina Forster (Dan) of Sylvania, OH; two sons, Jason Harr of Hattiesburg, MS and Roger Harr (Holly) of Orlando, FL; granddaughters, Lauran Forster, Rebekka Forster, Heather Forster and Ella Harr; grandson, Bryce Harr; sister, Fay Conner; and a brother, Earl Jernigan.

Pallbearers will be Lane Grissett, Jason Collins and Cameron Collins.

Visitation will be held at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North on Friday, April 29, 2016, beginning at 1 p.m. with the funeral service to follow at 2 p.m.

Interment will follow at Whitmire Cemetery.

Bobbie Jean Coker Stallworth

Bobbie Jean Coker Stallworth, 85 of Atmore, passed away Friday, April 22, 2016,vin Atmore. She was a homemaker. She was born in Escambia County, AL, on February 13, 1931, to the late William Edgar and Jesse Maude Keller Coker. She enjoyed tending to her flowers, making flower arrangements and decorating.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Burton Stallworth; and one brother, Elbert Coker.

Survivors include one son, Jackson B. Stallworth, II; two daughters, Rachel (Joe) Brown and Marsha (James) Bell, both of Atmore; three brothers, George Coker of Dothan, AL, Jimmy Coker and Billy Coker both of Atmore; four sisters, Evelyn Thurman of Texas, Millie Purvis and Peggy Moye both of Atmore and Faye Summerlin of Molino; grandchildren, Brian Bell, Matthew Bell, Leslie Odom, and Jacob Stallworth; and seven great-grandchildren.

Per her request a private family graveside service was held.

Sara Gene Turk Woods

Sara Gene Turk Woods73, of Atmore, passed away on Friday, April 15, 2016, in Atmore. She worked in the medical field for many years and was currently employed with Atmore Community Hospital in medical records with over 27 years of service. She was born on November 29, 1942, in Bay Minette, to the late Marshall Lyle and Verna Louise Duck Turk. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

She is preceded in death by a grandson, Patrick Ryan Burkette.

Survivors include one son, Rob (Sabrina) Woods of Vernon, FL; two daughters, Susanne (John) Sirmon and Blair (Mark) Burkette, all of Atmore; one brother, Bob (Carolyn) Turk; and Barbara Turk, all of Atmore; grandchildren, Daniel, Shaun, Justin, Wesley, Erin, Marshall, Houston, Saylor, and Eldon; five great-grandchildren, Nieces, Brandy Turk Fehr and Courteny Turk.

Services were held Monday, April 18, 2016, at the First United Methodist Church with Dr. Debora Bishop officiating.

Interment was in Mothershed Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Shaun Sirmon, Wesley Sirmon, Justin Emmons, Marshall Burkette, Greg Duck, Chris Fehr.

Honorary pallbearers will be the women of Atmore Community Hospital medical records department.

LeRoy (Lee) Hochstetler

April 20, 2016

LeRoy (Lee) Hochstetler, age 83, passed away Friday, April 15, 2016, in Atmore, surrounded by family, friends, and music. He was born in Topeka, IN on April 20, 1932, and married Sara (Sally) Bontrager on October 19, 1950. They moved to Blackduck, MN in 1964 where they raised their seven children and served as foster parents for 37 years. Lee worked in home construction and owned his own business for a period of time. He and his family were very active at Kitchi Pines Mennonite Church and in their community.

In 1994, Lee and his wife started spending the winter months with family in Atmore. There, he volunteered in prisons as a chaplain’s assistant with We Care Prison Ministry.

Lee is survived by Sally Hochstetler, his wife of 65 years, and seven children, Eugene (June) Hochstetler of Goshen, IN, Theda (Ervin) Yoder of Bemidji, MN, Phyllis (Arlan) Yoder of Mylo, ND, Loveda (Wendall) Schrock of Traverse City, MI, Jim (Carol) Hochstetler of Atmore, Linda (Dave) Levy of Blackduck, MN, and Darcy (Keith) Peavy of Jackson, AL; 23 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Anna Mae (Ernest) Miller of LaGrange, IN, and Alice (Perry) Miller of Cambria, WI.

Lee was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, three sisters, and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held at Grace Fellowship in Atmore on April 19, 2016.

Pallbearers were Tyler Hochstetler, Joshua Hochstetler, Caleb Hochstetler, Jonathan McMath, Drew Peavy, and Manuel Morales.

Lee was a living, breathing example of loving the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. He impacted many peoples’ lives and was loved dearly by everyone who knew him.
