There’s a little good news for parents sending their children back to school Monday in Escambia County — school lunch and breakfast prices are the same as they were last year.
And there’s no need to worry about cash or checks — pay online at mealpayplus.com.
Escambia Breakfast And Lunch Prices
- Elementary Breakfast: $1, full; $0.30, reduced; $1.80, adult.
- Elementary Lunch: $2, full; $0.40, reduced; $3, adult.
- Middle/High Breakfast: $1.50, full; $0.30, reduced; $1.80, adult.
- Middle/High Lunch: $2.50, full; $0.40, reduced; $3, adult.
Free And Reduced Price Meals
Eligibility and income are used to determine eligibility under the National School Lunch Program.
For free meals, the household income must be less than 130 percent of the federal poverty level. For reduced price meals, the household income must be less than 180 percent of the federal poverty level.
Applications will be sent home with students during the first week of school.

Work At Bratt, Ernest Ward Totals $1.99 Million; $66,000 More Than Planned

Building renovations and new modular classrooms at Bratt Elementary School and modular classrooms at Ernest Ward Middle School are costing the Escambia County School District over $66,000 more than anticipated. That put the total costs for the three projects at $1.99 million.
Tuesday evening, the school board approved an additional $33,753.69 in change orders for the new modular classrooms installed this summer at Bratt Elementary. That put the total cost to date on the modulars at $473,759.69.
The changes and additions included $13,992.97 for an additional covered sidewalk to the main building; permit fees for required inspections, $1,496.45; sod for erosion control, $2,130.87; additional concrete decking for building access, $2,333.10; engineering for required fire hydrants, $1,961.93; and $11,838.36 for fire hydrants required by the fire marshal.
The Escambia County School Board has approved an additional $8,201.06 of additions to the renovation of the front building at Bratt Elementary School. The new total expenditure for the renovation is $970,435.79.
The project was originally set to cost $946,407.00, but an additional $15,827.73 in changes were previously added to address issues that were found during the renovation.
The new additions to the renovation contract include: remove worn out carpet in five rooms, $646.40; additional painting after removal of conduit, $1,357,45; rough-in electrical in wall of north wing classrooms, $5,551,21, fire caulking and patch drywall in stage area, $646.00.
The board also approved an additional $9,062.83 of additions to the contract to install modular classrooms at Ernest Ward Middle School. That put the total cost of that projet at $552,453.83.
Additional costs at Ernest Ward included $13,362.31 for a covered canopy to the building; $1,749.83 for a sidewalk; $2,574.58 for sod; $1,484.70 for sitework for drainag; $1,961.93 for fire hydrant engineering; and $$11,838.36 for fire hydrants required by the fire marshal. The costs were offset bya $25,286.36 credit for concrete, awnings and rails that were not installed.
Five classrooms with included restrooms, five sinks and two closets were installed at Bratt Elementary. Ernest Ward Middle received five classrooms, two closets, and one 24 by 36 foot restroom facility. The expansions were to accommodate additional students from the now-closed Carver/Century K-8 School. The total modular cost to date for both schools was $1,026,213.52.
The $970,435.79 renovations at Bratt included a central heating and cooling system, new restroom fixtures, new lights, new ceilings and various smaller projects in the front or “north” building, which was constructed in 1980.

Public Notice Town Of Century

The Town of Century is considering applying to the Florida Department of Community Affairs (DCA) for a FY 2008 Emergency Set-Aside Funding Small Cities Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) of up to $538,198.00. These funds must be used for one of the following purposes:
1. To benefit low and moderate income persons; or
2. To aid in the prevention or elimination of slums or blight; or
3. To meet other community development needs having a particular urgency because existing conditions pose a serious and immediate threat to the health or welfare of the community and where other financial resources are not available to meet such needs.
The categories for which these funds may be used are in the areas of housing or neighborhood revitalization, commercial revitalization, and economic development and include a variety of activities including:
Housing & Neighborhood Revitalization: housing rehabilitation, demolition of dilapidated housing and relocation of residents, weatherization and energy-efficiency improvements, code enforcement, land assembly or site preparation for new construction, physical improvements activities such as water and sewer improvements, street improvements, drainage and neighborhood facilities.
Commercial Revitalization: rehabilitation and demolition of dilapidated buildings, relocation of residents, physical improvement activities such as water and sewer improvements, street improvements, drainage and neighborhood facilities.
Economic Development: infrastructure improvements, acquisition of real property loans to private-for-profit business, purchase of machinery and equipment or energy conservation.
For each activity that is proposed, at least 70% of the funds must benefit low and moderate income persons.
In developing an application for submission to DCA, the Town of Century must plan to minimize displacement of persons as a result of planned CDBG activities. In addition, the Town of Century is required to develop a plan to assist displaced persons.
The public hearing to receive citizen comments concerning the community’s housing and community development needs will be held at Century Town Hall, 7995 North Century Boulevard, Century, Florida on Monday, August 17, 2009, at 6:15 p.m. To obtain additional information concerning the public hearing, contact Dorothy Sims at (850) 256-3208. Hot Dog Supper And Twilight Movie

Northview High School’s Relay for Life Team will sponsor a Movie On the Green Monday evening. Admission is $5 for a hot dog supper at 6:00 p.m. Entertainment will be at no charge with a showing of the movie “Twilight” on Northview’s football field. Presale tickets are available at the Northview High office and tickets will be available for student purchase during lunches. Please bring a blanket or lawn chair. Dinner Theater

The Byrneville Elementary and Byrneville Friends Relay for Life teams will present “Death of Doornail”. This is a dinner theater on April 17 at 7:00. Tickets are $10.00 in advance and $12.00 at the door Friday. Spaghetti dinner included. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. A spaghetti supper to benefit Relay for Life is planned for Saturday night at the Walnut Hill Fire Department. A $6 donation to Relay for Life provides a meal that includes spaghetti with sauce, bread, tea and dessert. The supper will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 18 at the Walnut Hill Fire Department at 7760 Highway 97.
