One more thought.

Should state law require that, upon entry to a campground, a convicted sex offender shall notify the park manager of their being on the registry. And the campground owner shall, at minimum, post this fact at bath houses, rec buildings, and the campground office, naming the site where the person is staying and providing a photograph.

I would like to know that when staying at a campground with grandkids,

A publicly-owned recreation campground should not become a permanent residential area under any circumstance. Escambia County should set limits, if there aren't limits already. Then enforce the rules.

If I recall correctly, Lake Stone CG has lakeside campsites available for shorter stays (like, weekend and a few weeks of camping), and the inland sites for longer stays. Just put a limit on it - -14 or 21 day limit for waterfront campsites, 5 months for sites away from the water (to allow winter seasonal campers). No extensions without fully leaving the park for a week (that includes all equipment).

Also, do not allow "permanence" to begin. Decks, potted plants, storage and use of large propane tanks, extra vehicle storage, skirts, stuff. Many campgrounds have a 10 or 15 year old camper rule, too. No junk

With regard to the sex offender, this person knew the rules about the registry, attempted a go around, and he got caught. Follow the rules.

He was homeless they needed a reason. Yes he offended almost 30 years ago. I feel like they should have did a background check before allowing him to stay if they were so worried. But it is true homelessness is rising like crazy in America and cities and towns better figure out how to get families back out of poverty or it just gets worse.

@Safebear, that is untrue. All Applewood Campgrounds run a background check on you. All it takes is your name and ID. Which you give as copies when you enter their campgrounds. Go on the National sex offender registry and run the name and compare the picture. You may claim it would scare people away but some find it comforting to know their kids are at the playground in a safe campsite. Much like when we were at ours and the company took over and everyone found out there was one there and they made them leave.

@Century - There isn't a campground anywhere that does a background check on anyone wanting to camp there. If that was the case, there wouldn't be anyone camping there because they'd be offended someone wanted to do that.

@Wow - Apparently he was friends with the family he is helping out. I'm sure he just didn't show up and volunteer to start doing it.

@rd He could have done something about that charge...ask for leniency via the Court system, ask for help through his State/Federal leaders, etc., if he felt it was unjust. Breaking another law, which I'm sure he was aware of, isn't the right way to accomplish anything good.

He came back here because he was let go years ago. We're probably known for judicial leniency. These people need to be in a Chattahoochee type institution. There is no cure for these monsters.

Just to put it in perspective. He was 20 years old when he was charged and received 4 years probation. He wasn't required to register because the registry didn't exist then. Now at 49, almost 30 years later, he will likely spend 5 years in prison for failure to maintain paperwork.

Meanwhile, Molino Man (see 12/31 article) with 14 prior felony convictions will likely be walking the streets again within 2 years.
