A change to road design, more lights, stop signs, lower speeds or more law enforcement presence will not decrease accidents or save lives. When penalties affect livelihoods in a financial aspect people will start paying attention. If it is proven that your phone dostration caused an accident there will be a $1000 fine plus restitution and suspended license for one year. If that distraction takes a life, your fine will be $2500, funeral expenses and a license suspension for 5 years. No exceptions or excuses. There is no reason to be on a phone while driving.

To those who feel these are harsh penalties, what would you recommend if you lost a loves one because someone felt a life was less important than replying to a text?

I travel hey 97 regularly, and yes it definitely has some difficulties, but IF one stays the posted speed limits and PAYS ATTENTION to their driving, it can be navigated safely. Being an ex cop in Alabama, I have worked a number of wrecks. Looking at the photo it is obvious that one of the vehicles definitely swerved directly into the path of the oncoming car. My question is, what was that driver doing that took their eyes off of the road, texting maybe? When will we know?

Yes we get it its the drivers. But! I do believe putting a center lane down certain sections of 97 would alleviate a ton of issues. Plus would make it illegal to pass in those areas .Also, would allow turning vehicles a lane out of the way. You would put that center lane down through all the turns and critical areas where its busiest. Either that or you build a divided hwy like you should have done 10 years ago. But at least the 3 lane option would make it exponentially safer..
