I’m not sure where a high bond protects the public if the accused can pay the bond. I might be missing something, though.

I can see where a high bond MIGHT protect the public IF the accused is guilty AND cannot pay the bond. (It might not because some crimes don’t endanger others or might not endanger anyone else.)

I can see where a high bond would NOT protect the public if the accused is innocent whether or not the bond can be paid, but it would punish the accused but innocent either way.

If there is evidence the accused is a danger to the public, releasing the accused is unreasonable for any price.

The purpose of bond is not to punish you for crimes you haven’t been convicted of. It is to assure you showing up for trial.

The REAL question is usually why it is so HIGH.

Bill of Rights, 8th Amendment:
“Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.”

(Admittedly, if she stole MY car, I would be unhappy but if she stole MY car, it would indicate a lack of shame or taste on her part.)

I see this chase as a violent crime. She could have killed someone and a $5K bond is STUPID. make these outlaws PAY!
