The reason we have that lengthy appeals process is to minimize the number of innocent people that are executed for crimes they did not commit. Getting rid of that appeals process will ensure that more innocent people are killed.

How many innocent people are you comfortable with killing in order to maintain the death penalty?

@Bob,
I think you have a reading problem. Both of you arguing with me have stated the expense of the execution, so you say. But, as I said on July 30th, the real expense is in the legal system that pays lawyers tons of money to represent murderers in endless appeals. If the lawyer's fees were reduced and the time of appeals were shortened, then the expense would be much less, and the incarceration expense would be less as well. I don't see why you can't understand that. You seem to be committed in your opinion to save the life of convicted murderers. Then you pay for it. Why force the rest of us to pay for what we don't agree with? And as to your last insulting comment, the only neighbors that deserve capital punishment are convicted murderers. Rest in Peace to those people who have been murdered.
Have a nice day, Bob.

No, you didn't answer my question. I asked what the benefits of the death penalty are over life in prison. You said that it prevents recidivism. But so does life in prison. You said that it was preventative. But it is just as much of a deterrent as life in prison. And you said that it's to save taxpayers money. But execution is significantly more expensive than life in prison.

Again, can you give me a single reason why we should execute people instead of exercising life without parole? Or do you just like the idea of killing your neighbors?

@Mike J,

The death penalty is the most expensive part of the criminal justice system per offender, costing taxpayers an average of $1 million more than a life without parole sentence.

My idea is cheaper than yours, so why are you so insistent on costing the taxpayers even MORE money???

@JustSaying,
Your family has certainly suffered tragedies and you are suffering for the rest of your life. So because of that, you want the murderers to suffer as well for a long time. I can understand that. But our human minds have the capacity to understand something without agreeing to it. You want all of us taxpayers to help pay for that incarceration and cause the long-term suffering in the murderer that you feel. I respectfully disagree. I would want the murderer to be executed in a manner similar to how the victim was killed. Or do it and help others at the same time through organ donation programs.

@Bob,
I did answer your question. You just didn't like the answer. I already stated that I want your point #2. And yes, there are studies from the University of Colorado that showed more capital punishment had a deterrent effect in reducing murder rates. However, I suspect that you will never be satisfied by my answers. So agree to disagree. You have your opinion, and I have mine.

@Mike J,

I’ve had not one, not two, but THREE family members murdered in three separate situations. All three were doing nothing wrong when this happened. I believe this qualifies me to render the opinion you requested. Do I want their murderers to receive the death penalty? The answer is an emphatic NO!!! Let me tell you why.

WE have to deal with the loss of our loved ones and the horror of what happened to them FOR THE REST OF OUR LIVES. Tell me WHY their killers should not have to live a long miserable life in confinement dealing with that as well. WHY should their killers get the “quick and easy” way out while WE have to suffer??? If you use execute them, their suffering will end. Ours will not.

Capital punishment, sadly, does not deter someone who is intent on committing murder. Mandatory life in prison, shockingly, does.

1. Life in prison also prevents a murderer from committing murder again. There's also no correlation between capital punishment and crime rates, so claiming that it's preventative is simply not true.
2. I'll agree that IF we agree that the death penalty is a good thing, then it should only be enforced when a person has been convicted and found guilty by a jury of their peers and have exhausted the appeals process. However, you still haven't explain WHY the death penalty is a good thing.

Again, what benefit does capital punishment provide that life in prison does not?

Lastly, again, life in prison is significantly cheaper than capital punishment. If you want to give me a tax rebate for not wanting to kill people without a good reason? I'm not gonna complain about that.

@Bob, Two things here.
1. Death penalty accomplishes permanent punishment, preventing that murder from doing it again, and lets all criminals know that this will happen to them if they murder.
2. The difference that you asked Bill T. is simple enough: murder kills a victim who is usually innocent. But the murderer is guilty. Therefore, the murderer's execution is justified because of guilty criminal conviction by a jury of peers.
Lastly, I'll say that since you are so against capital punishment, then YOU pay for their housing and medical and security, not force via taxes for all to pay. Let's see if you would be willing to contribute more money to the prison system for death row inmates knowing that other people are not.

"you know next to nothing about why people should be put to death" - right. That's why I'm asking. I can't think of a single reason why we should use the death penalty other than bloodlust.

"I bet if he were to kill a member of your family you would change your mind" - One of my family members was murdered back in the 90s. The guy who did it is still in prison. I think that's the best place for him, and certainly don't want to hurt his family the same way he hurt mine. Even if I did, "I want to murder someone" isn't a valid reason for killing them.

"Did I nail it bob im talking about you!!!!!!" - No. You still haven't answered my question. I'll repeat it: Can you give me one good reason why we should keep the death penalty?
