Bear Lake is considered to be impaired by the state of FL based on years of testing, meaning that the lake does not meet its designated use under FL law. There are too many nutrients in the lake, which causes the overgrowth of plants--algae, plankton, and even shoreline vegetation. This puts the lake into an imbalance and is not healthy. Instead of clear, clean water it can turn murky and will not support a healthy natural system. Nutrients can come from stormwater runoff, fertilizers, septic pollution and other sources.
