REGARDING:
"Life in prison would ensure that he wouldn’t sell drugs again."

When you start with a false statement everything which follows is automatically called into question. There IS drug dealing in prison. Therefore the claim that a drug dealer in prison would not deal drugs is on the face of it false. Whoever in prison is dealing drugs is by definition a drug dealer.

AND:
"Life in prison is just as effective a deterrent as execution."

The quantifiable effectiveness of either one has not been shown. You do not know how many people decided not to engage in criminal activity of various types because of either death penalty or sentence of life in prison. Therefore it's not possible to say for certain which was more effective than the other -- assuming either has some effectiveness which is very likely because people tend to do what they think they can get away with and they're less likely to do that which they believe would result in something they find unacceptable.

AND:
"Life in prison is substantially cheaper than execution."

Execution itself is not expensive. Therefore this is a false statement. Even if it were true, it is wrong to simply always go the cheapest route. There might be other reasons to not do it, but that's not the question here.

AND:
"Again, what would killing this man accomplish that life in prison would not?"

It should be obvious that a man who cannot kill produces a society in which that particular person does not kill.
It should also be obvious that at least some people would avoid doing that which might get them killed if getting killed were considered a possibility.
It would mean other inmates were safer if there were no known killers among them. (We should care about those other inmates don't forget. After all any of us might at some point be convicted of some crime and thrown in prison. We would not want to be surrounded by unsavory characters.)

In the meantime, we should consider restoring this gentleman's belongings to him. He might need that much fentanyl for personal consumption -- save him from having to buy it from other inmates within the prison.

Fifty Five Years Old. 55. A fifty five year old adult.

So, from the time he was about 15 in school to age 55 (let me count now, that’s ten, twenty, thirty, yes, that’s it), for FORTY YEARS, this adult has been unable to find a career, get trained, receive further adult education in any other field, and develop any solid financial footing other than… illegal drug sales? Wow! He could have been nearing retirement, but now the state has to care for him.

He even tried to smuggle drugs into the jail!?!? OMG. Acting like a child sneaking something into the house.

@Bob by disposing of the dealer completely would ensure he wouldn’t do it again and would be a perfect example of what happens to people that deal and instead of paying for his life in prison by taxpayers !!! You ask now you know !!!!!
