As I understand it, gain time is still calculated the way it always has been by the computer system, the problem is, the legislature added a cap that will not let it get below 85% when without the cap, it will go as low as 67%. They need to remove the cap to allow it to work. I 100% agree on Parole. It is ridiculous Florida does not have a Parole system to reward inmates for good behavior. At least those on their first incarceration.

Moco hit it on the head, There once was a time when the prison officials could use gain time and parole as a carrot to dangle in front of inmates to encourage good behavior. These were effective tools that corrections guards and officials could use to control inmates. Then along came the Fl. Legislature and implemented mandatory minimum sentencing. This move effectively eliminated parole and gain time, which means whether a prisoner is well behaved, or a problem they serve their full sentence.
This move is also a contributor to the overcrowding we see now.

@ensley boy… the inmates have nothing to lose they are in there for that long they don’t care what they do or to whom they do it to. Those officers go through extreme training all the time.

Not takling sides…. but , are the inmates getting more violent or does the staff need more training to avoid conflict. Seems like there has been an uptick to these issues happening lately.
