J Fowler, you have shown your ignorance. CR 164 averages 16’ wide from one end to the other. There places where it is 17’ wide and places where it is less than 15’ wide. Legal width for any vehicle on the road without an overwidth permit is 8.5’, plus safety equipment, as in mirrors. Please tell me how two 8.5’ wide vehicles plus mirrors can safely pass each other on 16’ +/- of roadway? Especially in a 55 mph zone. The math tells you it is not possible. Steven Barry and the rest of the County Commissioners are waiting for a bus load of children to be killed before they decide to widen the road.

Having done road construction in the past I can tell you that road is as wide as every other county rd. All county road lanes are a minimum of 11ft wide. Which means that road is a minimum of 22ft total width. The average full size pickup like in this wreck is 7ft wide. You tell me how two vehicles with a total width of 14ft can't drive down a road with a total width of 22ft without running over each other? Also the average school bus is 7.5 ft wide. Same question. Average 18wheeler is 8.5 ft. Same question. Paved shoulders have made people complacent with crossing lines. Stay between the lines and this doesn't happen. Driver error is driver error, no matter how much you holler about the road. My prayers are for everyone in this wreck and all the rest. Sincerely. This isn't a road problem, this is a driver problem.

Jr. is 100% right. Not only residents, but students, parents with students taking them to school, teachers, and students, driving this dangerous road. Also school buses. I think not long ago a ECUA truck and school bus collided mirrors on 164. Definitely time to widen this road and some serious road shoulder work.

This road is dangerous. This is a narrow 2 lane that’s used quite a bit by the residents up in that area. Throw in the log trucks doing their jobs up in those woods and it adds to the problems. There’s barely enough room for wiggling in one lane much less with passing vehicles…yes, I know one isn’t supposed to “wiggle” while driving but one small slip of the steering wheel and you e run off that narrow edge of your road and could be catapulted into the other lane….I reckon the “powers to be” in the County Commissioner’s office doesn’t really care about the North End…prove me wrong.

Only going to get worse with all the development being allowed in the County. The roads are highly impacted as result of this uncontrolled and terribly planned development. People in south and central county already complaining. Road improvement will not happen for 5-10 years after the development ends. If it ever does! So, people in North County, doubt you’ll get any relief until the densely populated areas meet the road demands first - UNLESS YOU ELECT COMMISSIONERS WHO CAN PUT A STOP TO CATERING TO THE MASS DESTRUCTION OF OUR COUNTY!

Greetings, We see a very large number of motor vehicle crashes in North Escambia and as your fire and life safety specialist with Escambia County Fire Rescue, I am looking for a business to sponsor an Extrication Demonstration for the public in the North end. This was very successful last month as we presented the demonstration at Five Flags Speedway.
This demonstration educates and brings awareness to the seriousness of this problem in the north end of the county, and it also gives our firefighters added training in automobile extrication.
If you would like to sponsor this event, please call or email Ray Melton at (850) 471-6525 or remelton@myescambia.com . Also, anyone needing a smoke alarm can reach out to me as well and we will install them at no charge !
We want you to survive when tragedy strikes !
