The problem is the ACLU period. They have made it so the correction officers are the criminal, along with stopping road gangs . If the convicted were made to work from sun up till sun down like it use to be, then they r to damn tired to be assaulting anyone. There are so many jobs the convicts could do around each county they are housed in that could be productive. And could actually balance out the cost of jailing them. But the ACLU put a stop to it all and now u have the current state of affairs.

Pat N – Most prisons in Florida are run by the state and not private companies, however there are some privately run prisons in Florida unfortunately

Sam you are absolutely right. BUT, there are two sides to that coin. There are lots of inmates in prison that do not belong there. They are cash cows for the private companies that are running the prisons.

Maybe if the prisons were funded correctly for programs and had temperature controls neither staff nor incarcerated would get overheated (causes violence on both parts). FDC a will never tell what really happened, conventionally most thing happen off camera.

Why can’t these correction officers wear bodycams?
When an inmate throws urine, spits or throws feces, it’s on tape.
Then punish the heck out of them!! They are in prison for breaking
the law! Treat them as such, make it miserable enough that they
won’t do it again!

The Department of Corrections is facing a severe staffing shortage (33% for over a year), the incarcerated are subject to brutal heat in a concrete dorm almost 24/7, the food has become watered down beans, there is seldom staffing for canteen or recreation. This is an extremely dangerous situation for our Correctional Officers and the people they supervise. Expecting one person who has worked 12-16 hour days to be responsible for 70-140 men is ludicrous. Your Legislators have offered solutions but our shot down by other Legislators and the Florida Sheriff’s Association as requested by our Governor. The Department of Corrections is the 6th largest item on the Budget, yet our Governor has attended a meeting at a prison but never toured one. Spending $3 billon to me as a taxpayer requires fiscal responsibility. There are many sides I’m sure to this story, while I don’t know them, the public need to get the big picture. People don’t want to work there. We over incarcerate. I would estimate almost 30% or more of the population that are ill, elderly, over-sentenced could be safely released. Numerous studies have been done to prove it. Put an ankle monitor on then if you want at 1/6 of the cost. Let’s help our Correctional Officers. We need a solution quick. I was a correction officer for a short time in the late 80’s , inmates will spit on you , throw Urine, and feces on you. And they know you can’t do much about it, no wonder they have trouble getting guards who wants to deal with that everyday. I’m not for abusing anyone but some needs a attitude adjustment.
