I was big enough for the gulf and the right size to pull the kids skiing at the time. Mostly we just liked to go to Sand Island and sun. At times I would casually fish in the gulf. One day, I caught a red fish. I called the marina on the marine radio so see if it was ok. When I docked the marine patrol was there. Well, since I was a casual fisherman I had no idea it was an inch or two to long. Well I got a ticket, and went to court and the wanted a hefty fine and jail time. I wrote a note and handed it to the judge and told him that, it was an absolute mistake, I had no Idea (which is true) and I and very sorry. He dismissed the case and and I paid the court costs. The next spring, I left Holiday Harbor Marina and passed the Oyster Bar headed to Sand Island. I hit the gas on the boat after I passed the where the boat launches are. The marine patrol pulled me over. That spring they had installed a no wake zone after the boat launch that had such small print you could hardly read it. I got a ticket for that too. I decided after these incidents, in dealing with the marine patrol, to sell my boat!! I had a nice boat about 20 years ago. They know FWC/ Marine Patrol are out there and most of the times sitting at the Launches. The monies that the fines will cost you/them can purchase larger amounts at any local seafood Market. Are they taking chances just for the thrill of it or they aren’t up to date in ther knowledge of what’s open/closed or the size limits? To me, it’s just not worth it but that’s me. Those LOCALS know and understand the laws concerning fishing but there’s an OUTLAW in every bunch. ALSO, we all know that these species aren’t as they say as far as being in low numbers and over fished…many times I’ve been hit by Triggers trying to get to the Snapper or vice versa…Great job FWC For the life of me I will never understand why some take the chance of keeping out of season catches…or under/over the size. We sometimes take our boat out into the bay and tie up under 3 Mile and get up onto the concrete platform. We sit up there and fish and do no harm to anyone or anything. Game Warden comes along and says "you can't be on the platform"..... why? I just want to know WHY? It is VERY nice on the concrete...... pad.....like parking on beachfront.
