Mick, I was stationed at LTA Tustin from 1980-85. Those blimp hangars, built to house blimps in WWII, are National Landmarks as being the largest free standing wooden structures in the world. You are correct.

Go to NAS Lakehurst, NJ if you want to see what a lighter than air ship hanger, as well as the scene of the Hindenburg disaster. The hanger no longer has air ships but housed catapult training in the 90’s when I was there.

The blimp hangars at MCAS Tustin were the view outside my back door when I lived in base housing. Goodyear Blimps would overnight there at times. Tried to get my kids a ride one weekend but got bumped by someone of higher rank with his kids. Good memories though, they are a sight to see up close…
