You can take your torn, tattered flags to any scouting or Veterans organization. They know how to properly dispose of them

The Stars for our Troops project takes 3' x 5' American made flags ready for retirement and re-purposes the Stars into Thank You's to our military, veterans and first responders. There are Stars Makers across the country that are doing this, or anyone that is patriotic that is looking for a community service project may also join.
With the Star is a message:
"I am part of our American flag that has flown over the USA. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds caused me to become tattered and torn.
Please carry me as a reminder that YOU are not forgotten."
The Stars are available in bags of 50 from Star Makers or the Stars for our Troops website. Two bags of Stars are mailed to anyone currently serving with an APO, FPO or Military Base address. Included with the Stars is a personal message from you to the recipient sent in a card format.
Questions? Most can be answered on the website. www.StarsForOurTroops.org

I'm proud of these young men and women for retiring the old flags with respect and dignity. Special thanks as well to the members of the Legion post that guided and assisted them during this somber occasion. It's good to see respect shown to one's Flag and Country. Those veterans on hand could tell us a thing or two about what the flag means to them.

You can take old/worn out flags to American Legion Post 340 on Ashland Ave (off of Nine Mile Rd), they have a drop box out front.

How can we dispose of a worn out American flag? Do certain organizations accept them for proper disposal?
