Scott, you need to reread the article before telling Vickie to reread it. It literally says she was in the middle of the road. Well, it uses center, but center and middle are the same.

It is not the road’s fault or the fault of the FDOT. Accidents happen, and in most cases, they can be avoided. Many times, people walking along, or in this case in the roadway, are unaware they are not easily visible to drivers. This intersection is located on a curve and a hill making it even more dangerous. The driver of the vehicle probably never saw the victim, due to the fact his head lights were illuminating more of the shoulder of the road than the actual road while on the curve. another point to consider this is not marked as a pedestrian crossing. Yes, we all need to be aware of the road and the possibility of a pedestrian or other hazards but during non-daylight hours pedestrians need to be aware that they are hard to see and should be wearing some type of reflective clothing. At that time of the morning, the woman could have been walking home from work or going to work. There is a Burger King, McDonalds, Waffle House, Winn Dixie and Shell Circle K in that area.

OR, she may have been fleeing a bad situation. She had a reason and we don’t know that reason.

This is why we need to change the way we design our cities, and it starts with having safe intersections with continuous sidewalks that force cars to slow down and pay attention. FDOT knows nothing about pedestrian as well as bicyclist safety. Pedestrian deaths are at an all time high and the only solution is to change our ways, just as the Dutch did from the 1970s to today.

I also passed by on my way to the gym at 5 am and again on my way home at 6:30. It was terribly sad.
